Webbed - Recalled Toy Alert

November 30, 2007

Guardian Angels

Are you tired of all the toy recall talk yet?  Yeah, me too. Unfortunately, they are probably far from over and how is a busy parent to keep up? Especially with the busiest shopping time of year upon us. It’s hard enough to keep track of our kids, period, and we may not have the time to sit down and peruse the morning paper or catch every second of the nightly news, in fear that yet another item intended for our precious bundles is deemed toxic. Safety is always our first priority and thankfully the mama behind RecalledToyAlert.com has our back.

RecalledToyAlert.com was a natural progression once recall after recall started to hit, and was designed with one thing in mind:  to keep busy parents easily informed and children safe. Sure we can check out the government run Consumer Product Safety Commission but who has time to sift through their overwhelming pages of links?  Pulling the same data as the CPSC, RecalledToyAlert has an easy to use interface – one click and you fall directly into the recalls which are sorted by date. If you’re looking for something specific, the search feature will save you loads of time and you can easily forward recall information to anyone with an email address. If you just can’t bear to see another recall, you can simply “Browse Best Toys” and go right for the good guys, however, I do wish detailed information on the “best toys” was included so I knew why they have achieved such a title.

As most parents these days, this topic is one I’m very passionate about, and still I was surprised to see that some recalled items slid under my busy-mama radar.  Now I can sign up to receive recalls by email  and never fall behind again.

While you’re sending out your baby’s holiday wish list this year, RecalledToyAlert.com should be the first link at the top of your list.  It’s tough to manage on our own, help ensure the gift givers are giving something safe.

Kushies

Kushies2 Koolest Toys Around

My son sticks everything in his mouth, and I mean everything! He doesn’t hesitate to grab a stinky shoe, the cat’s food, or my iPhone (ah!) and cover it with his wonderful baby slobber. Yet, I have had a hard time finding something that is meant to go in his mouth that he actually wants to put in there. So, when I discovered Canadian-based Kushies and their fun and eclectic line of toys, I knew we were in business.

The Zolo Linko – Clip Together Teether & Toys [$32] is one of the coolest looking toys I have seen in a long time. It consists of 11 separate pieces that your little one can play with individually or link them together for a cluster of colorful fun. Each section has a different texture and shape to it to stimulate baby’s senses, with his hands, eyes, or mouth.

Aside from my new favorite toys, Kushies also has a wide variety of other baby related products.  From the  the Splish Splash Rain Jacket and Pant Set [$47] to the Swimsuit Diapers [$11]. Both come in bright colors and prints, that make sure your little guy or gal stands out, whether  jumping in a puddle or playing in the sand. It makes me long even more for the winter to hurry up and end already and bring on the April showers and some Summer days.

Plan Toys Kitchen Center

November 29, 2007

Plan_2 Make Dinner Plans

There is one thing in this house we’ve all grown to expect:  pizza and cookies for every meal, every day. Fortunately for my thighs and slowing metabolism this is just what is being cooked up by our child’s imagination in his play kitchen.  With a menu this sophisticated, no ordinary kitchen will do but the Kitchen Center by PlanToys [$120] can easily handle the job.

The PlanToys Kitchen Center has sleek styling any modern-day chef can appreciate and the bold colors make it anything but boring.  And we mean bold colors as in vibrant non-toxic, water-based paints, not colorful plastic garbage as the kitchen is made from chemical-free, preservative-free, recovered rubberwood. The Kitchen Center features an oven and cook top on one side with a sink and dishwasher on the other – cooking and cleaning?  I’m taking notes as I eat my 8th dozen of cookies.

Cause of the Week - Heifer International

November 28, 2007

Heifer A World Without Hunger

Here in the US we tend to be about immediate gratification. Especially this season, we will most likely each receive a mountain of gifts that will be well loved. For a minute. By next Christmas, most of this year's haul will be all but forgotten. So how about a gift that keeps on giving generation after generation? A gift that has the ability to change lives and end hunger?

Thanks to the amazing, amazing, amazing-ness that is Heifer International this is a very tangible thing. Founded in 1944, the history of this organization is simple and spectacular. Rather than provide short-term emergency relief they are committed to creating self-reliance and sustainability. The concept is this, a donor (YOU!) purchases the gift of live stock, from young heifers to honeybees, which is then gifted to a family in need in one of 50 countries. This family then has a source of food and possibly a source an income, that continues to grow and produce and reproduce.

And this is where you'll be blown away. The crux of the program is that those who receive a gift are required to then pass the gift on to someone else. By sharing their animal's offspring - along with their knowledge, skills and resources - an entire network of hope, dignity and self-reliance is created. So, essentially, after some time has passed, the gift of one animal can help sustain an entire village!

Heifer International, has me all sorts of excited, THIS is how we change the world! And so things have changed around here, along with blocks and puzzles and books, my 2 year old has honey bees and bunnies on his Christmas list this year, we might not see them ourselves, but knowing is enough for me.

Red Castle Whizz Stroller

Redcastlewhizzblackturquoise Whizz On By

Some Mamas & Papas won’t even give a stroller that costs more than a car payment (or two!) a second look, but I’m personally singing a different tune now as I shimmy along in style with my little guy’s new ride, the Red Castle Whizz [$500]. On the very first push- which feels like you aren’t pushing anything at all- I gushed, “Ohhhhh, this is sooooooo worth it!”

Your child can move it with the Whizz up to 44 lbs, and add the matching Carrycot [$150] for babies up to 19 lbs. With an 8” front tire and 10” back tires; this is more a vehicle than your average stroller. And at the same time it is more graceful and stylish than your average stroller. Keep the front tire swiveled for a trip in the city or through the mall, or adjust it to fixed position and off-road it through bumps and even sand.

The accessories alone make this stroller stand out from the rest. My favorites: the easy-access basket that you can get to through the back or side zip, and the wheel covers… so convenient for those rainy, muddy days when you don’t want to mess up the car! The sun screen with its own storage pouch is a wonderful plus, too. Forget gingham and plaid- check out the many stylish color options you can choose from, like black with fuchsia or brown with turquoise.

But most of all, I love how easy the Whizz folds down and fits into my small car. That alone is often the deciding factor for most stroller purchases. Or maybe I love how it makes me want to take more walks. Or how my toddler gets all serene and quiet and happy when he’s in it. And suddenly everyone is smiling and easing on down the road. Yeah, it’s soooo worth it!

Holgate Toys

November 24, 2007

Colorcone Out With the New, In With the Old

It seems every time there is a new innovation in toys it is short lived- products are recalled, the parts are too small, or dangerous or contaminated. Aside from the obvious hassle it leaves us Mama's to worry over exactly what is safe for our kids to play with these days. In our house we've gone back to the basics, plastic things that move and flash have been evicted to make room for classic wooden toys.

And when I say classic, I mean it. One of our favorites is a little ol' toy company that's been around for well over 200 years. Holgate Toys, located in Pennsylvania, are the premier maker of children's wooden toys in America, and with good reason. Their vast collection of playthings and accessories are made from 100% natural, kiln dried hardwoods and bright bold non-toxic paints; and EVERY toy made exceeds US safety standards, which these days says a lot!

It's probably well worth mention that when Mr. Roger's himself was looking for toys for his neighborhood, he choose Holgate Toy. Take a peak around and you'll might just see a Trolley and some royalty you recognize. Our little one's love the Handeez vehicles for zooming around and us Mama's have spent way too much time fashioning jewels with the Jumbo Lacing Beads.

Afforable, safe toys, made so close to home, has us breathing a collective sigh of relief. And I'll take hearing the sound effects of my little one over a piece of plastic any day.

Win it!
We have a Rocky Color Cone for one lucky reader! To enter send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 24 with Holgate as your subject and answer the following question. Who was the famous brother of Holgate's early toy designer?

VIOlight

November 23, 2007

Vio This is The Way We Brush Our Teeth

In my two years as Mama I think I've spent more time in the bathroom than in the rest of my years combined. Between the actual bathing, diaper changes and tosses and now that glorious world of potty training, it seems we spend half our day in there. In all that time, thanks to mommy-germ paranoia I've become well versed in just how disgusting bathrooms can be.

Even when it looks clean, one flush of a toilet can leave a bathroom covered in all sorts of creepy crawly things. And our toothbrushes sit there on the counter and collect it all. "A single toothbrush can harbor millions of microorganisms, which translate into harmful bacteria." According to the CDC "Even after being visibly rinsed clean, toothbrushes can remain contaminated with potentially pathogenic organisms." And we stick them in our mouths...and our children's mouths. YUCK!

Thanks to a little invention called VIOlight [$50] I can brush again without cringing. The sleek, modern device (designed by Phillipe Starck!) is part toothbrush holder, part sanitizing machine. Just place your toothbrush top down into the holder, push a button and a germicidal UV bulb goes to work zapping up to 99.9% of bacteria, bugs that could otherwise cause colds, flu, or who knows what else. The VIOlight turns itself of when it's done, leaving your brush clean and protected until you need it again. Best of all there is room for 4 brushes of any size, including toddler and kid's or electric toothbrush heads.

We're so cautious of the things we put in our children's mouths it seems a good place to start fresh is with the very thing that's supposed to keep it clean. VIOlight will give you that in just 10 minutes a day and look great doing it. Just what the dentist ordered.

Win it!
We're giving away VIOlight Travel Sanitizer! Send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com with VIOlight as your subject by midnight November 23 and let us know which nationwide retailer sells VIOlight.

Aden and Anais

November 22, 2007

Aden1 Mod Wrap Must Have
When I first read about the Aden and Anais Australian Muslin Wraps, I was intrigued.  A blanket that has multiple uses and gets softer each time you wash it?  Sounds impressive.  Then I took one look at the various designs that Aden and Anais offer in their wraps and I had to have a set, or three.
Since I've been washing and using the wraps, I've found that they are my one must have item every where I go with my baby.  I've used them as blankets (swaddling, yo), burp clothes, a diaper changing pad, and stroller cover, and even as a place to sit for one last impromptu fall picnic (they are nice and big).  We get compliments every where we go on their fresh and slick style, and the best part about these wraps is that they keep baby warm if he's chilled, and keep him nice and cool if he gets too warm.  Pick up a set for your boy or girl, or get my favorite--the Camo Set--for your little baby hipster-in-training.

Cause of the Week - (Product) RED

November 21, 2007

Redproduct 40 million people around the planet currently live with HIV/AIDS. Africa, which has just over 10% of the world’s population, happens to be home to 60% of those affected. (over 25 million people!) This disease is the leading cause of death in Africa, with more than 5,800 people dying every day from AIDS.  These sorts of statistics break my heart and tug at my sole, making me want to be able to do something, anything to help.

Now I (and the rest of the world) can!  (Product) Red is the brainchild of U2's Bono and Bobby Shriver (Chairman of DATA ~ Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) and is the answer to my ever longing desire to change the world. This economic initiative is aimed to deliver money to The Global Fund and has contributed over $45.5 million dollars since its birth in March 2006.

The ever burning question now is, how can I help?  (Product) Red’s current partner’s are Converse, Apple, Gap, Emporio Armani, and it’s newest addition, Hallmark. Here’s how it works:  Included in each of these companies are specific items geared toward the (Product) Red initiative.  You, the consumer, simply upgrade your choice.  You see something (Red) you like, you buy it.  And a certain percentage of the proceeds go to the Global Fund, to help those struggling in Africa as a direct result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic that is presently plaguing them.  Not only do you help out those individuals directly, you get to sport a cool new product, and show your support of (Product) Red. Ideally, others will inquire as to what your (Red) items mean.  You will enlighten them.  In turn, they will upgrade their choices, and the cycle will live on and on.

TreasuredThe latest Gap (Product) Red t-shirt spells out a gripping message, (2 WEEKS) [$28].  The design behind this latest addition is that Gap’s contribution to The Global Fund from the sale of these shirts is equal to that of the average cost of 2 weeks of anti-retroviral medicine in Africa, which enables people living with HIV to lead healthy, normal lives. The (2 WEEKS) shirt will only be available for a limited time, so don’t miss out on getting one for yourself or one for a friend.  Hey, why not buy a few!  The more you buy the more you help.  You can even check out the Impact Calculator, which calculates just how much you have contributed through the (RED) purchases you have made.

In one simple embrace (the parenthesis used in the Product (RED) logo nave been coined the “embrace”), you the consumer, are able to help women and children affected by the horrific HIV/AIDS disease in Africa.  With a simple purchase, you can be a part of an already revolution.  Now go out there and paint the town world (RED).

Fagus Toys

November 18, 2007

Jeep Viva La Fagus!

When the major toy recalls hit, I was thrown into a panic, scared to look. “Please, please don’t say matchbox cars.” If so, parenting life was going to get a whole lot harder. We, and our current car collection, were spared but for how long? The fact we were in the clear this time didn’t make me feel entirely too safe. So bit by bit the cars were secretly weeded from the collection but what to replace them with? Our first guess, Fagus, proved to be a huge success, so much we have little need or desire to keep searching.

When our German-made wooden Fagus Jeep [$69] arrived I worried about how it would go over for a little boy with very selective taste in miniature cars.   Instead of metallic paint made of who-knows-what to chip and flake and plastic mini-detailing to snap and break, the wooden jeep marvels with it’s natural beauty, full-tilt, easy steering, more open-ended detailing like the three solid color peg figures, removable gas tank and tire tread that makes my mid-sized SUV swoon.  And at a hefty 11 inches of solid beech without a nail, screw or staple in site, this car is not going anywhere.  Your kid can try to drive it into the ground but this is one toy you’ll be handing over to his kids and their kids.  Suddenly it was “matchbox, who?”

When you’re looking at the price tag of a Fagus car, remember you can easily pay a couple bucks for a car that will quickly deteriorate and annoyingly fit in all the wrong places, or you can pay a little more for a high-quality, durable car one time.  We’ve learned that a zillion pieces of junk doesn’t make a nice collection, but one or two heirloom-quality items is a collection worth playing with and holding on to for life. (Who wants a dinky car that can fit into a matchbox the kids aren’t allowed to play with anyway?)

Geuther Family High Chair

November 17, 2007

41y70cyxavl_aa280_ A Chair for all Seasons

One of the worst parts about needing (or is it wanting?) so many baby items is the fact that your baby will grow out of them--physically and mentally--in a seriously short amount of time.  Add to that the fact that the majority of baby items are designed to give you pastel teddy bear nightmares for a month, and it becomes a struggle to equip your home without losing your style or your wallet along the way.  The biggest offender is the high chair, and since expensive and ugly are a bad combination, what’s a modern mama to do?
Brought to the US in 2005, by distributor Euro-baby, the Geuther high chair is an alternative to the typically boring and less than stylish highchairs so many people have at home.  It’s wooden (already a head start in my book) and has a sleek European design, so you won’t need to stash it away in the closet when guests are over. A serious step forward in making your dollars go further, the Geuther [$230] is easily adjustable and turns into a regular chair for kids or adults.  We put it together and tried out all the sitting positions ourselves. Even without the cushion, the chair is comfy and looks great sitting in our home. Thanks to its mod design and mad skillz, it’s quickly become a welcome piece of furniture in our humble abode.

Peter Potty

November 16, 2007

Pottypeter2 Standing Room Only

I’ve often joked that my next home will have urinals in the bathrooms. With all sons and a husband, I’m not really kidding. Naturally, as my youngest is potty-training, he noticed that sitting on the toilet to go #1 isn’t  how his brothers and Daddy do it. Enter the Mom-of-boys dream… the Peter Potty [$49.95], the world’s only toddler-sized flushable urinal.

Personally, I prefer that my boys learn to urinate standing up right from the beginning. The Peter Potty is an excellent and convenient training tool for this method. I feel it is more sanitary and keeps my guy’s little hands out of the big toilet (for now, I guess!) Taking just a few seconds to assemble, it's a breeze to fill the top portion with water for flushing, and empty the bottom drawer for cleaning.

Equipped with an adjustable stand, the Peter Potty is portable for whichever area in your house accommodates the training process. Or, if you’ve got little room for a potty seat in your bathroom, the Peter Potty comes complete with a wall mount- just like the all-too-fascinating public restrooms, only without the smell…

The Peter Potty has even received an endorsement from a group of board certified pediatricians who agree that there are significant benefits to 'standing up’ while little boys are potty training. And there is a possible link to early potty training success by using the Peter Potty, anywhere from 2 to 6 months faster than traditional sit-down training. It’s not just a novelty- it’s practical!

Potty Song

Pottysong Music You Can Potty To

I'm going to be completely honest here, when the Potty Song CD arrived for us to review, one listen had me wanting to run to bathroom... to hide! I'm not a huge fan of kids music period and a 60 second song about your child going potty seemed an eerie replacement for a parents praise. I asked myself if I would seriously use it with my son, answered no and put it on the back burner.

Fortunately, I happened to leave our potty song CD in the player I share with my almost 2 year old. After breakfast one lazy morning he saunters over and pushes play, I get ready to jump up and offer another tune but quickly sit myself back down when I see his face. He LOVES it! Now before and after he goes potty (and at other random intervals throughout the day) my little guy begs me to play his potty song!

While definitely not a replacement for a Mama's cheers this 50 some second personalized song is a great tool for motivating and congratulating your little guy or gal to use the potty. The simple lyrics and catchy tune are motivating to any little potty-trainee. The Potty Song website also offers training tips and a certificate of achievement you can print when your little one is diaper free.

I would LOVE if they would loop the song so you don't have to push play again every minute, and in the interest of not pushing the marketing machine on my little one, I was a little dismayed when my tot started repeating the "PottySong.Com" mention at the end of the CD. All that aside, we've become huge fans of the Potty Song after seeing it work it's magic and think it's a definite plus in any parents potty arsenal. The kids are sure to love it (even if drives you a little crazy) and anyone who's been through potty training knows, we'll take all the help we can get.

Win it!
Does your little one need a little encouragement? We have two certificates for free Potty Song CD's (or downloads) for two of you. Just send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 16 with Potty as your subject and let us know who goes potty in the sample song.

Baby B'Air

November 15, 2007

Babyb Baby B’Awesome

I think we can all agree that flying with young kids is about as fun as poking yourself in the eye with a hot fork.  When the kids aren’t crying, screaming or fighting with each other, they’re doing their best wiggly moves to make their way off your lap and into the aisle.  We can’t have them getting arrested for going near the cockpit, and most kids hate to be strapped into their car seats on an airplane, so what’s a parent to do?  Most parents just hang on to the wild child the whole flight, which makes for uncomfortable and stressed out travel.

Enter Baby BAir.  They have created a safety vest [$34.95] for lap seated infants and toddlers that is approved by the FAA while cruising, and is soft and affordable to boot.  I was shocked to discover that 90% of all injuries on commercial airlines occur during flight, yet our little lap cherubs continue to fly unrestrained.  The award winning Baby BAir has exceeded FAA stress test levels for aircraft seats, and will give you peace of mind while flying.  It’s the best thing I’ve seen to give a helping hand in keeping the toddler from roaming, and it’s made from extremely soft and comfy fabric, so even the fussiest baby won’t protest wearing it.  My super sensitive boys usually have a hard time wearing any kind of safety restraint, yet they had no complaints about the vest when we simply pretended we were rocket ship captains preparing for launch.  You still aren’t allowed to restrain your munchkin with anything but your arms (or a car seat, in its own purchased seat) during take off, taxi and landing--per FAA regulations--but the good news is that Baby BAir is working to get an exception for their safety vests.  Baby BAir has excellent customer service and education, so you’ll never feel left out in the cold with questions or concerns.
When planning your next flight, take along a little help from Baby BAir.  It won’t help with the screaming or the fighting, but at least they’ll be safe while doing it.

Win it! We have a toddler sized Baby B'Air safety vest for one lucky Mama. Just send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 15 with Air as your subject.

See Kai Run

November 14, 2007

See mama drool.  That was the first thing I thought when I saw a picture of the Aki boots   [$42] by See Kai Run.  As I moved from eyeing the Aki’s, to the Oliver’s, to the Alex’s, I found myself doing a little jig in my seat, thrilled to see such fresh styles available for our funky babies.  When our Aki boots arrived at my house, I couldn’t believe how luscious they were in person.  I found the leather so soft and buttery, it was positively lick-able.  I had but one question: do these boots come in my size, too?
The problem is, all style and no substance won’t get my little prince very far in life, so another question remained: would the See Kai Run’s stand up to a road test?  Slipping them on baby was a breeze (see: buttery leather above), but what’s more, the special rubber soles were just sturdy enough and just flexible enough to let baby get away with wearing them months before contemplating his first step.  The Aki’s passed the test, and took names.  I was sold!  Finally something cute and functional.
In a sea of shoes for pre and new walkers, it's hard to stand out above the crowd.  See Kai Run is a family owned and run company, and each season they churn out line after line of gorgeous and hip styles for boys and girls.  All too often, we mama’s have limited choices when it comes to baby's footwear.  We have to choose between the way too predictable soft soled shoe, or the “big boy” shoe with a sole so stiff it's like strapping bricks to your sweet little one's cankles (let’s face it, all babies have them).  Not only are those soles rock hard, they aren’t healthy for growing bipeds' feet.  And no one wants an unhealthy biped.
Parents everywhere will fall in love with See Kai Run.  Just beware:  your chances of licking and cuddling a shoe just got really good.

Micralite Stollers

November 13, 2007

Micralitefastfoldred The Way We Roll

Drive through any parking lot in America and you're certain to witness the following scene. Mom, loaded down with parcels, purse and diaper bag, baby hooked over her arm (or wailing in the car), is half hunched over, half flailing, trying to get the darn stroller folded up. Again. Been there?

This problem is being solved worldwide with a squeeze and a tug thanks to Micralite. Launched in Europe three years ago and recently brought to the States, the Fastfold [$369] offers a truly one handed fold. I know other strollers claim the same but I assure you, this one will not disappoint. This compact ergonomic stroller is perfect for little one's 3 months and up, and the Newborn Plus will accommodate babes straight from the womb. My son loved the way the sling like seat snuggled him in and I loved the fact that I could safely steer with one hand. In addition to being super lightweight the Fastfold will stand up on it's own when collapsed, perfect for those of you squeezing it into a suburban garage and cramped city dwellers alike.

If you're looking for something a little more "look at me" then the Toro [$599] is for you. Combining the concept of the Fastfold into an all in one this raises the bar without losing any of the benefits. With a fully reclining seat, bumper bar and bold bright colors it's no wonder it's flying off the shelves. When combined with the optional carrycot or car seat adapters this stroller can carry you from birth to 40 pounds and it's ability to cover all terrains ensures this is the only stroller you'll ever need.

Wish Lists

Gift Ask and You Shall Receive

Whether we like to admit it or not Christmas in this country is all about the gifts. We shop until we drop in hopes of finding those perfect gifts for the one's we love and then we shop some more. While we'd like to tell you to shelve the gift giving and give your time and money to another cause (some great ideas coming soon!) we know that's not realistic for everyone. So, instead of risking it with those inevitable gifts that flop and go to waste (we used to have the ugly sweater of the year award in my family), why not just ask for what you want.

We do it with baby shower's, weddings and housewarmings, why not extend the idea registering for your gifts to birthday's and Christmas too? Just think of how much fun you had making that list as a kid. By going digital you're saving paper and you have the power to chose gifts that are good for your family, from companies that are good for the planet and you might even be able to sneak on a charitable donation or two. And just think of how much easier shopping will be!

Sure, you'll probably still get that one annual gift of horror (which we know you'll find a worthy home for) but hopefully this will free up some time and energy to focus on what these Holiday's are really about.

Our top three:

WishList.com - The leader in the pack, Wish List makes it easy to add your wishes in a variety of formats. You can shop their store, or our favorite, bookmark a button that helps you add items from ANY website just by clicking on the goods. You can even snap a picture with your camera phone and email it to your account.

Wish list at Amazon.com - One of our favorite one stop shops makes it easy to add and share the items of your dreams. The only downside here is that you can only add items available from Amazon and affiliates, which really isn't a downturn since they carry just about everything on the planet.

BoxedUp.com - Part shopping wishlist, part social networking. You can create your wishlists here and see who has the same taste. You might love it, but this site would probably leave Grandma scratching her head.

Win it!
$50 at Amazon would definitely help get my holiday shopping started, how about you? Yes? Ok, then, just send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 12 with Amazon as you subject and let us know what's #1 on your wishlist this year, we'll happily help one winner get their shopping started.

Sailor Jerry

Holdfast_2 Hey There, Sailor!

If you’re a fan of tattoos then you're probably familiar with the old-school style made popular by famed tattoo artist Sailor Jerry. Or better yet, maybe you have your share of his flash covering your own arms?  Color me jealous.  I can only hope that after my son turns 18, he’ll have the sense to surprise me with a carefully selected Sailor Jerry piece of art versus some horrible, random picture he picked from a seedy tattoo parlor wall.  In the meantime, while we can still demand our kids’ skin remain as ink free as we created it, they can pay homage to the tattoo legend with the Sailor Jerry line of onesies.

Sailor Jerry onesies are available in several of his most popular pieces, including the classic Hold Fast anchor. Each soft onesie is made in the USA with the environment in mind.  Our only complaint is the limited sizing – they are currently only available in 12-18 months.  The rest of the kids will need to wait a little longer but once they can slide their feet into the Sailor Jerry edition Converse for kids like the Devil Tattoo hightop, it’ll be worth the wait.

Win it!

We're giving away a classic hold fast onesie! Just send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 12 with Sailor Jerry as your subject and let us know where this was designed.

What's Cooking Weekly

November 11, 2007

Cooking_2

It’s What’s For Dinner

Occasionally I’ll have the good intentions to write out meal plans for an entire week, along with a grocery list, but I usually never get past Monday. I am not a good planner. Thankfully, What’s Cooking Weekly is swooping in to tell you what’s for dinner, and even has the shopping list already filled out for you. Sign. Me. Up.

An online Family Meal Solution, What’s Cooking Weekly [$6 per month] will suggest 5 healthy meals per week with access to recipes and grocery lists, as well as ideas to involve the whole family during dinner preparation. It’s worth it for the ideas alone. Each issue also includes helpful information such as which vegetables are in season and the latest news from the What’s Cooking Blog.

Choose to make all 5 or just one or two meals. Although there are some vegetarian meals, most are for the meat-eating set. But those with special diets or tastes will find easy ways to substitute as well.  Wednesday’s meal might offer Spinach Ravioli with Tomato Cream sauce, a loaf of crusty bread, and a salad with toasted almonds… yes, my stomach is growling, too.

Keep the heat in the kitchen and take a break from having to come up with new meal ideas on your own. What’s Cooking Weekly will bring your family back to the table and enforce the importance of healthy eating starting where it should- at home.

Win it!

We're giving away a free 6 months subscription to What's Cooking Weekly to help you start things off right in the new year! To enter send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 11, and let us know the names of the women on the What's Cooking team.

Big Dipper Wax Works

November 10, 2007

TinsBee Charmer

Tis the season for candles, and I am always cautious about which ones to burn in my home. Just like household chemicals and, ahem, toys… we need to be aware of toxic ingredients in our breathing space. That candle may match your decor or smell yummy in the jar, but just what is in it?

Big Dipper Wax Works brings back the pretty candles and makes them safe, as they are made from 100% beeswax, a natural & non-toxic renewable resource. Other benefits of beeswax are its exceptionally long burning time and the release of negative ions which improve air quality. Just like rainstorms and seashores, it will eliminate pollutants and allergens from the air that we breathe. All that in just a candle!

Every nose will find pleasure in the wide array of scents available at Big Dipper Wax Works. Lighten up your table’s centerpiece this holiday season with the Lotus or Rosette floating candles [$8.50]. The Pine, Spice, & Mint Beehive Glasses [$14] are certain to get your Fa la la on.

If reducing the stress of the season is more on your list, revive your spirit with the Aromatherapy line. My personal favorite is the Lavender-Geranium Beehive Glass [$14]. It’s beautifully packaged and deliciously scented, and I will take all the balance and relaxation I can get. The passion arousing Patchouli-Cassia will be your extra dose of mistletoe this Christmas, and Harmony or Enlightenmint just might save your sanity when the in-laws come for a holiday visit.

Win it!

We have a gift pack of natural beeswax candles and a little aromatherapy for one lucky reader! Just send an email to reviews[@]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 10 with Bee as your subject and let us know what year the idea for Big Dipper stung the man in charge.

Happy Heiny's Diapers

November 09, 2007

Heiny The Happiest Heiny on the Block

After almost 2 years I feel like I'm finally getting a grasp on this cloth diapering thing. Of course I would now that my son is nearly through with them. I started out pretty primitive with prefolds and covers, but it seems that with every new line I try, these things just keep on getting better!

Not new on the market, but new in my house are Happy Heiny's, and they live up to their name! The custom milled fleece makes for the softest diaper I've ever touched and it remains just as snuggly wash, after wash, after wash. Their nappies also don't have leg casings which means no irritating red marks on those chubby little thighs.

Our current favorite is the pocket diaper (which comes in black and a skull print I might add) but that might change with Happy Heiny's new one sized diaper on the scene. The series of snaps and cross over tabs allow one diaper to easily grow with your babe from birth on up to 35 pounds. Seriously, it's like magic.

What we love best is that while Happy Heiny's are one of the largest manufacturers of the modern reusable diaper all of their diapers are made in the US by Mama's working from home. Knowing that I'm supporting Mama's like me, taking it easy on the environment and making at least one little heiny happier is just enough to make my day.

Win it!
We have a Happy Heiny's Pocket Diaper (neutral yellow, size large) for one of you to try! To enter, email review[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 09 with Happy Heiny's as your subject.

Robeez Baby Booties

November 08, 2007

Booties We seem to have skipped fall in our neck of the woods and jumped right into a blustery winter. Yes, it's November, but I seriously thought I'd have more time to strategize my mission of keeping baby warm.  Winter coat? Nope. Mittens? Uh-uh. Hat, Scarf? Will last years do? Boots? CHECK!

Thankfully one of the most trusted names in wee one's foot wear has us Mama's covered through these colder months too. Robeez baby booties [$39], bring the same soft and snuggly soles as their everyday shoes, only with winter in mind. The cuddly, teddy bear plush lining provides warmth and protection for those tiny toes. While the soft, flexible leather outer layer means these are a breeze to slip on and the elasticized ankle will keep them in place. Robeez says they're like a "hug in every step" and while I can't squeeze my toes inside to tell you, the fact that my little one will leave them on, means we agree.

The classic brown and cream booties are almost grown-up chic, and the pink and blue pairs will (hopefully) keep you from having to answer if that's a boy or girl bundled in that snow suit (not that boys can't wear pink, and girls blue, of course!) And if you order now, Robeez will donate a pair to child in need, two pairs of snuggly little feet for the price of one? Enough said!

Win it!
We're giving away a pair of Robeez Booties in every color! To enter just send an email to reviews[@]mamaspeaks.com by Midnight Nov. 08, with Robeez as your subject and let us know what color you're itching for.

Support the Season of Sweet Feet

Heartsole We’ve all seen those commercials. The one’s with organizations seeking donations to aid in feeding, clothing, and educating children in underdeveloped countries. Well the Robeez Company must have seen those commercials too, and decided that they wanted to help. Not only are they helping “save the feet” of  little toes by working with organizations like The Children’s Hunger Fund and Free the Children, but they also donate to Success by 6, The Canadian Red Cross, and other well deserved charities out there by contributing shoes and booties to kiddies all over the globe.

Since the Robeez Heart and Sole Campaign began in 2003, they have donated over 135,000 pairs of shoes and booties to various charitable organizations. 36,000 pairs of those little soft-soled shoes were dispensed to the Children’s Hunger Fund during their 2006 Season of Giving campaign alone. A donation that was passed along to orphanages and schools in countries such as Nicaragua,Romania and Cambodia.

With a record like that, of course they're at it again this year! For every pair of shoes or booties you purchase through November 15 at their online store, Robeez will donate a pair to a child-in-need. You can help make 2007 a record breaking year for Season of Giving Campaign just by shopping for some shoes (yes, this means it's ok to get one in every color!) cause enough for me!

Teeny Beanie

November 07, 2007

Btl_2 Some days my kids are born to be angels, other days they're born to make me wind up on the side of the road with a twitch in one eye and a wild look in the other.  One thing sure to lower their cherub status is the way they drive me nuts with their choice of fashion.  We have our differences in style, I want them to wear something funky and neutral in color, they insist on the bright colored superhero shirts their grandma bought them, again.
The one thing we always have in common is our love of hats.  From cowboy to baseball, to even those that are hand knit by yours truly, my boys and I can't get enough.  The latest on the hat scene is Born to Love, with their line of fresh and irresistible hipster hats for your littlest guy or girl.  Created by a stay at home mama and her artsy beau, these beanies with an attitude can make even the most tacky outfits seem re-invented.  The sweetest styles like the argyle and the camo [$22.50] are favorites of mine, but they also carry solid colors to round out your tiny dude’s (or dudette’s) urban wardrobe.
With the weather turning cold in the blink of an eye, you'll be searching for cool hats for the kids.  Pick your battles wisely, and cover those little noggins in style with Born to Love.

Win it!
If you'd like an Argyle Visor Beanie for little guy or gal, just send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 7, let us know what solid colors these cool hats come in. (We'll love you more if you make your subject Born to Love.)

Eyes Wide Open

November 06, 2007

Birth The moment you announce your pregnancy, scary labor stories are sure to follow you wherever you go. From the lady in line at the grocery store to all the Moms in your playgroup, each memory is more dramatic and horrific than the last. Are women doomed to only have dreadful childbirths, or is there another way?

I truly feel like the wool has finally been pulled from my eyes after reading Tina Cassidy’s Birth: The Surprising History of How We Are Born. With every culture and generation, since babies have been born, there are different ideas and opinions on how women should birth children. Here in Cassidy’s book you’ll find out the real facts and the real “why” things were done the way they were, and “why” certain practices are done in hospitals, homes, and birth centers today.

This book is one of those Can’t-Put-It-Downs. Tina Cassidy will befriend you with her writing style, drawing you in like an engaging conversation. Some chapters I found appalling and nauseating, due to disbelief of the way women delivered their babies- even just decades ago. How much do we as women really know about the history of giving birth? How much is based on myth, fear, or assumption? As you read, you’ll find plenty of facts sure to surprise, such as how 70 years ago women were more likely to die if they gave birth in a hospital than at home! And even (especially!) in our current times, just how informed are we really?

The moment I finished Birth, I felt empowered and ready to finally have the birth I deserve and that my body was designed for (although I am currently not pregnant…) I felt a strong desire, as a woman, to find my place in this mistaken “business” of childbearing. There must be some way I can make a difference. I finally see more clearly, with eyes open, and ready to see.

Win it!
If you'd like your very own copy of this MUST read, just send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 06, with BIRTH as your subject.

Peace Out

November 05, 2007

Blankies The Blankies are emerging onto the toddler rock scene! You did know there was such a thing as a toddler rock scene, right?

Four animated artists make up the band featuring the voices of Cora, Fiora, Zodi, & Zip and each character adds its own flavor to the three Blankies albums. The Learn album will have children singing along while they learn about days, months, seasons, senses, insects, & rhymes. Action, gets the kids up and moving and getting their groove on. And for the simmer-down moments, there's the Peace album, full of mellow tunes perfect for chilling out after all that running and playing.

These are not your average bippity-boppity fluffy kid songs. Maybe I’ve even caught myself singing Bubble Bath at tub time and You Can Do It sounds like something already in Mommy’s iTunes.

Each CD is available for $12.99 each or as a download for $9.99, and will give back more than just enjoyment to your child. The Blankies are produced by Power Arts Company, Inc., whose desire is to produce entertaining and educational children’s music with substance and originality. They are a proud partner with World Vision in building a better world for children, and provide music CDs to schools in low-income neighborhoods, enabling and encouraging fun and learning for students and teachers.

Win it!
We're giving away all 3 Blankies CD's! Just head on over, listen to some tunes and email your favorite to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 05.

Honest Baby

November 04, 2007

HonestbabyTellin' It Like It Is

We try to teach our children that honesty is the best policy, but I've definitely had those moments out with my little one when I've told a little white lie to save face (or avoid the checkout line Mommy police). Because, after the zillionth time someone told me my son would never learn to walk if I carried him in the sling or that he'd never learn to sleep
