What Year Is It Again?

December 24, 2007

With Christmas tomorrow and 2008 a mere week away I feel like we should be posting some year end wrap up or favorites list to pack 2007 up with a neat little bow. I even attempted to peruse the archives to find some best of's, but to be honest, picking favorites was sort of like having a favorite child. (We love them all the same, and if we don't we're not telling) We're pretty choosy with what makes the cut to grace the pages (screen?) here at Mama Speaks and so what you see daily is our best of.

But, we played hooky last week (with good reason) and with all the holiday ups and downs we know you'll be sneaking to your laptops and iPhones for at least the occasional reprieve, and well, we just can't leave you hanging can we now? And so...we'll be wrapping up 2007 with a contest a day, just a quick little post with your chance for an extra holiday goody or two!

Thanks for making out first year such an amazing success. We wish you all the happiest of holidays!

xoxo,
The Mama Speaks Team
Ashlee, Cara, Steph, Jaymi, Arianne and Jen

Peas on Earth

December 23, 2007

Poe Dreaming Green

We're big fans of the environment here at Mama Speaks and so by default (or force) our offspring are too. While we can proclaim our love for all things green with our words, our little one's are generally not so well spoken. Thanks to the folks at Peas on Earth [$22-$24] they can wear their opinions (ok, so maybe for now they're our opinions) loud and proud.

Whether it's an affinity for two wheeled transportation, helping out humanity or just climbing creation you'll find an organically designed, hand drawn tee to say it like they mean it. Better yet all designs are printed on super soft American made tees, with jersey styles for tots and kids and colorful classic lap tees for the babes.

You'll love the message and you little one will be enamored (and hopefully inspired) by the images of kids doing good and keeping it green.

Win it!
One lucky reader will win the tee of their of their choice! Just send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 24 with Peas as your subject. Please include your tee of choice and size. Good luck!

Woollyhoodwinks

December 22, 2007

Woollyhoodwinks We’ve Been Hoodwinked

This time in the form of pint sized plush.  Yup, our little buddy Ludic [$30], the prankster that he is, tried to pull the wool over our eyes but we see right though him.  He’s just an old softy, inside and out along with the rest of the Woollyhoodwinks gang.

Each Woollyhoodwinks is handmade in the USA, filled with polyfill stuffing and their plastic safety eyes provide the perfect “I didn’t do it!” expression.  Ludic stands 7” tall and fits perfectly tucked under the arm of our little boy and can easily withstand the rough and tumble “love” dished out at playgroups everywhere.  Always finely dressed in his woolen attire, he often joins us during our daily adventures of grocery shopping, sing-along's and loves to just chill at home as much as we do.

The Woollyhoodwinks arrive in their own little tree, complete with a small surprise.  The gang consists of five members, making it easy to find the perfect match to your little prankster’s personality or one to give him a run for his money.  But watch out, it just might be double the trouble for you.

Win it!

We have a crew of Woollyhoodwinks for four of our readers. To enter send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 22 with Hoodwinked as your subject.

Fleur't Lingerie

December 21, 2007

Fleurt Fabulous Fleur't

Today is my anniversary. We're five. It has been in these five years that I've discovered something pretty spectacular. You ready for this? I, am a girl.  Shocking right? And while I'm grateful for his indifference to my longstanding tomboy ways, my husband is obviously a guy, and well, he likes pretty, sexy stuff. More specifically, ME in pretty, sexy stuff.

Yeah, that's been a problem. Even with my new found girly-girl-ness. There are certain things that I just don't do. Certain things like lace, ribbon, bows (and sorry honey!), but I'm not about to feel like a stuffed sausage for the sake of some time in the, well you get where I'm headed. And so me and lingerie have had a long standing love hate relationship. My husband loves it, I hate it.

Until... drum roll please, I discovered my Fleur'ty side. The beautiful line available from Fleur't lingerie is perfect for all of us girls. Gorgeous enough for special occasions and comfortable enough to leave you feeling special with every day wear, these bra's, panties and camisoles will satisfy both sides the marital equation. It shouldn't surprise me that the lingerie I am finally happy with was designed by a former rocker. Designer Nancy Yoo knows the female form and has created a gorgeous collection that fits and feels good.

My favorite, the Lulu set, is a statement in simple sexiness. The Lulu Bustier Camisole [$55] stretches gently to hug curves and is supportive enough to wear alone. Paired with the Lulu Boy Pant [$35], you have some hot undies straight from heaven. These bottoms sit low on your hips and give a snug fit without a tight waist band (and yes they cover all of your assets). And (gasp!) did you notice the lace? I guarantee this is lace you will love!

Cute, comfy, and straight up sexy, the name says it all, go Fleur't!

Win it!
We're giving away two Lulu Camisole and Boy Pant sets in green for two fleur't-ay readers. Just send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 21 with flirt as your subject and let us know if you'll need a S/M or M/L.

Senseo

December 20, 2007

Machine_supreme_sm One Cup at a Time

Ladies, let me introduce you to my new BFF, the Senseo coffee pod system. How did I ever survive before? I don't need the newest blackberry, the hottest new cell phone, or whatever other high-tech piece their coming out with. No people, I have a Senseo, which allows me to have gourmet coffee right in the comforts of my own home. I love this thing! One cup of coffee at a time, which is perfect! No more making a pot, drinking a cup and then letting the pot get cold until I'm ready for another one. Coffee any time I want it now.

And Senseo just came out with New Barista Blends, oh how I can't wait to try these!!! Senseo uses the pod system...one pod for regular strength (who wants that?) and two pods for extra strength (that's what I'm talking about baby!). It's the easiest one cup system I've seen. There's a week left until Christmas, hurry and tell your hubs to get you one!!! I'm telling you, it'll be your new BFF too!

Follow this link to take a quick survey for your chance to win a Senseo system of you own and some free coffee. (I'll race you...)

Cleanwell

December 19, 2007

Cleanwell Well is an Understatement.

Over the summer, the internet and news media were buzzing with stories regarding children licking their hands after applying alcohol-based hand sanitizer and getting sick enough to the point of hospitalization. This, of course, threw the world’s mama’s and papa’s into a frenzy! We were throwing away all of our alcohol-based hand sanitizer’s and reverting back to the days where we actually had to wash our hands. Don’t get me wrong, I was one of those mama’s too. I went out and bought bottles and bottles of anti-bacterial soap and tossed all of my hand sanitizers that were once so strategically placed all over my house. Being the research guru that I am, I came across a product that sparked my interest, and I think it will definitely spark yours.

I scoured the internet high and low, and was able to go straight to the source to get answers to my questions…and there I found Cleanwell. It is an absolutely amazing product, and it was exactly what I was looking for. The Cleanwell products are made with Ingenium, a plant-based, all natural, anti-microbial that is that is actually approved the FDA and EPA in regards to their standards of germ-killing abilities. It even kills E. Coli, Salmonella, and Staph (including that oh-so-scary MRSA) on contact! Better yet, it does not contain any alcohol or harsh chemicals, no pesticides, fertilizers, petrochemicals, or toxic by-products, meaning just one more reason why you can sleep better tonight. All in all, it still kills 99.99% of germs, just as much as it’s alcohol-based counterparts out there on the market, but without the Alcohol.

When it comes to convenience, Cleanwell knows how to combine a quality product with convenience, to make every aspect of a mama’s everyday life easier, and more hygienic. From the individual wipes [$12] (which I always carry with me so I can hand them out and pass on the good news regarding Cleanwell to everyone I meet), to the 1 ounce bottles [$3] (great for the diaper bag or purse), to the 6 ounce bottles [$7] (great to keep at the changing table), Cleanwell has got you covered, while keeping you clean all along the way. Recently added to their already astounding line of products is the All-Natural Anti-Bacterial Hand Soap. This mama can’t wait to get her hands on this new product, because it is sure to be a big hit.

So don’t worry about throwing out those alcohol-based hand sanitizers, because Cleanwell can give you a million reasons why you should. But seriously, all a mama needs is one, and that is that the safety of her child is at stake, and anything to keep your child safe is reason enough to make this switch.

Win it!

We have a bottle of hand sanitizer (6oz) to get you started on your way to clean. Just send an email to giveaways@mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 19 with Clean as your subject.

Least Likely 2 Breed

December 18, 2007

Ll2b The Joys of Motherhood Measured in Ounces

You’re pregnant, it really is a joy isn’t it? The beautiful round belly, the glowing skin and hair, the hemorrhoids…what?  Oh they didn’t warn you about that? Me and my big mouth.  Yeah, unfortunately it happens to the best of us even before the pushing starts.  But look on the bright side, without hemorrhoids; we’d have no use for Roid Rage [$6] by Least Likely 2 Breed.  Not just an entertaining name, it’s useful, convenient and a conversational piece all in one!

If you insist you will be spared and make it through pregnancy and birthing hemorrhoid free, then let us direct your attention to the Bad Ass Booty Balm. Your ass might be safe, but your baby’s may need a little extra protection.  Even those with the most durable of flesh will sport some redness on at least one occasion.  The paraben-free, natural ingredients in Bad Ass Booty Balm are reason enough alone to pass all the other diaper ointments lining your general store shelves, but vegan mamas be warned, this one isn’t for you.

Least Likely 2 Breed is strictly mama made, owned and operated.  She calls it like it is, no beating around the bush with fancy names we wouldn’t mind bringing up at the dinner table.  There is enough sugarcoating with parenting. Nursing moms will appreciate Tough Titties Nipple Rub and all moms and dads will get their kicks (on again) with Mother Effer’s Va-J-J Jelly. Each is available in the same compact 2 ounce tins with some of the finest and worry free ingredients.

Hemorrhoids, diaper rash, sore nipples and dry vaginas.  Yup, pretty much sums up motherhood.

Win it!

If you'd like to give Least Likely 2 Breed goodies a go, just send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 18 with Breeder as your subject and we'll enter you to win a Bundle O Joy (pictured).

Bosom Button

December 17, 2007

Bosom Button Up!

Fashion can be fierce when it comes to modesty. Some of the cutest tops and dresses I find are just too low cut for this nursing Mama. Pinning and wearing a camisole underneath are such a hassle and often ruin “the look.” I was really excited to find the Bosom Button [$12], a tiny piece of jewelry that also functions to cover that cleavage!

On certain occasions I can get away with a lower neckline, but in other situations I would rather cover up. Handmade of real Swarovski crystal, pearl, or fine gem, the Bosom Button expands your wardrobe. It a fine accessory for the modest or when you just need to secure something in place. Buy individually and choose from 10 different color samples or add The Essential Collection [$25] or The Classic Collection [$25] to complete every style.

Just pierce the Bosom Button through your clothing and fasten the back. I am no longer stressing about plunging necklines and loose wrap tops or dresses. The Bosom Button even can take the place of a missing button on your favorite shirt. And it soon just might become the new must-have item to keep in your handbag for just in case. No more safety pins or double stick tape- I am so relieved. Discreet and tiny enough to not distract, but you can still make a small fashion statement- it’s got you covered.

Win it!
Bosom button anyone? Just send an email to giveaways@mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 17 with Button as your subject, for your chance to win.

Green Up Gift Giving

Fishlip We'll each give and receive our weight in gifts this season and unfortunately with that come a lot of waste. Even when you take a products own wasteful packaging out of the equation, discarded wrapping paper, ribbon, bows and boxes add up fast. American's spend $2.7 billion (yes, you read that right!) on ribbon, paper and bows annually, and our trash output increases by 25% over the holidays, adding up to 25 million extra tons of trash going to landfill. If that ain't wasteful I don't know what is.

You can can start with things you already know we're big fans of here at Mama Speaks, simply bringing along your own shopping bags and precycling will go a long way. When it comes to making presents pretty, use what you already have laying around- newspaper, brown paper bags, fabric scraps and even old cereal boxes, can make for really pretty packaging. I also love making the "wrapping" part of the present. Baby gifts can be wrapped up in a receiving blanket and secured with diaper pins or a pile of presents for a college student or new home owner can stashed in a stylish laundry tote.

And if you just, must wrap- for the love of ribbon, go recycled.

Panjo Kids

Panjo Did Somebody Say Super?

What can clear the tallest towers in a single bound? Travel in and out of weeks without ever leaving the room? And save the world (ok, so maybe just his playgroup) all before nap time? My super kid of course! At least since he's been rocking his superhero cape from Panjo Kids [$30].

These mama-made, customizable capes are sure to bring out the super in any kid and us mortal mama's will be surprised at just how much fun some flapping fabric can be! We've been through our share of hero gear and the attention to design and detail you'll find here will not disappoint. From an impressive collection of funky fabrics to the option of sending in a selection of your own, you can create just the right cloak for your little conquerer. And if you have a couple of justice league members running amuck, don't worry, each child can have their own initial emblazoned on their back. Because the last thing any mama needs is a superhero showdown.

There are a few in-stock capes available in time for Christmas but with the holiday rush in full swing we suggest giving a Panjo Kids Gift Certificate [$35]. Gift Certificate's can be mailed or emailed and the opportunity to design your very own super cape is, after all, a rare opportunity. Besides, I know a couple of little hero's who might just need to refine their power of patience!

Win it!

How would like a Panjo Kids gift certificate? One winner will recieve a $35 certificate to purchase the cape of their choice! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 11 with Super as your subject and let us know which cape you'd like.

Cause of the Week - Just Give

December 10, 2007

Justgive This season is all about giving back. Some of us know just where we want our money and time to go, who we want to help and how; and some of us know that we want our money or time to go somewhere, but aren't quiet sure where that is.

JustGive.org is a wonderful website that can help you find that special cause that is perfect for you. They are a nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect people with the charities and causes they care about and to increase overall giving. The all in one, easy to navigate website features more than 1,000,000 nonprofits across the nation. With that many options, in just a couple of clicks, you're bound to find what you're looking for.

One of our favorite features is the fact that you can purchase a JustGive gift certificate. There's nothing like buying an honorary tree for the family gift exchange only to find that Uncle Joe now clears timber for a living. (Oops!) Now you can give the gift and anyone on your list can choose the cause that speaks to them.

Whether it's money, stuff or just good old fashioned time head on over and Just Give!

No-Snow Snuggler

Nosnow We Have Snow!

"It feels like Christmas" said my daughter when he looked outside the window and saw the big flakes coming down this morning. And then of course started the excitement and "let's go out and play". We got our first snow a few weeks ago and I realized we needed some better winter gear for those endless hours of playing in the snow. The biggest problem with my kids seemed to be the gap between the mittens and the jacket sleeves.

And right on time for the starting winter season  I found out about No-Snow Snugglers [$40]- the hybrid of a  fleece jacket and mittens. No-Snow Snuggler is a perfect mid-layer under a winter jacket and comes with the water-proof mittens attached. The perfect solution for keeping mittens in sight and preventing the nasty cold from creeping into your child's arms. For older children there is No-Snow II [$42]- a fleece jacket with a protective arm warmer and a fingerless glove.

In my opinion every kid in our Rocky Mountain winter wonderland should have a No-Snow Snuggler and in the warmer states this might be the only winter jacket your child needs!

Win it!
We have a No Snow Snuggler in Cobalt (size 2T) for one chilly kid. To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 10 with Snow as your subject and fill in this blank: No Snow Snuggler is brought to you by Crazy _ _ _ _ , LLC.

TV Time

December 09, 2007

Tv Make TV Time Mean Something

For most parents, gone are the days when the TV was only something you watched together as a family after dinner or on the weekends. TVs can be found in most every room today, including bathrooms and kitchens, and even cell phones. According to Neilsen Media Research, Americans have more televisions than people in their home. Many parents can probably admit that the TV is on more often than it is off. I am sometimes one of those parents. If I get careless or busy, I find that I have lost track of how long my kids have had the TV on.

TV Time [$20] is the simplest of concepts, a small box with cardboard tickets and an hourglass timer, but it is a tangible way to monitor the TV viewing habits of your family. With tickets in 15 minute increments as well as a movie ticket, you can allot how much TV can be watched. Your child will insert their ticket in the TV Time box and the 15 minute timer will run out when their time is up.

The tickets can be earned, or as part of an allowance or gift- this will help your children avoid “mindless” watching and give them the responsibility of choosing which TV show or movie they want to use their hard-earned ticket for. Once their ticket is spent, the idea is to turn the TV off. Same goes for video, Internet time or computer games- use these tickets as helpful tools to keep track of all boob tube or ‘puter habits.

Although it was originally designed for children ages 2-5, I feel that all audiences, regardless of age, can benefit from the idea of TV Time. It simply assists you and your kids to develop better viewing habits. It might not be for everyone if you’ve already got a great sense of discipline, but there are some parents (raising hand) that do need the extra help and in a fun example like TV Time.

Win it!
Need to curb your little one's tube time? We have a TV Time kit for one reader, just email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight Dec. 09 with TV as your subject to enter.

True Learning

December 08, 2007

True So True

Not all children learn at the same pace. I have three sons and know this first hand. Each, with their own unique personality, also comes with their own way of learning and developing. True Learning [$20] understands the individual schedule of your child’s growing mind. Its personalized learning system takes a different approach than most early-childhood teaching, allowing your child to keep up at his or her own speed.

With a wide range of resources for Literacy, Math, Motor Skills, Art, Thinking and World, True Learning’s award-winning curriculum has 4 levels of advancement and 6 core subjects for teaching your preschooler. Printing the worksheets right from your computer is a pleasant convenience. And just 15 minutes a day is all that True Learning recommends to taking a big step in the right learning direction.

One thing I’ve definitely learned since sending my older boys off to school is that learning doesn’t just stay in school- there is a lot to be supplemented by Mom & Dad at home, especially when your student might be struggling in a certain area. True Learning offers a valuable head start by preparing both parents and children for many years of learning to come.

TreBimbi Puppets

December 07, 2007

Trebimbi Dinner Theater

Teaching our children how to eat like the rest of civilization is generally a pretty daunting task. Thankfully, getting my son to eat has been easy enough, even though he skipped the whole baby food step and had no interest in anything other than Mama's Milk until he was over a year old, he's jumped right into the culinary world and is happy to devour anything from the spiciest curries, the blandest tofu or the greenest veggies. Unfortunately, we're seriously lacking in the "mechanics" department.

At 2 he's still content to grab everything from soup to spinach with a chubby little fist and shove it into his mouth. We've tried. Everything. Those plastic keep or toss utensils (mmm, no), melamine flatware (have you ever tried eating steak with a spork?!) and finally the smallest of our "grown-up" silverware (the best we've found but still way too big and much more likely to become instruments of the musical variety). But, Mama's there is hope!

My new friends at Italian Casa have been nice enough to import just the tool we've been lacking. TreBimbi's Puppets Flatware [$24], embrace the theatrical and will leave any little one longing for another bite. Each colorful set includes a fork, knife and spoon that can stand up and snap together like a happy little army ready to attack your plate. With plastic handles and stainless steel smiling "faces" they are the perfect blend of fun and function. And as the name suggests you can slip your finger (or your child's) in to the end of each utensil for a ready made puppet that can sing, dance, and oh, yeah, encourage your tot to eat!

Now instead of slinging soup you'll find us singing praises (quite literally) at our nightly dinner theater, no reservations required.

Win it!
We have a Puppets Club 6 piece set [$50] for one of you! Just send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight Dec. 07 with Puppet as your subject.

GelaSkins

December 06, 2007

Gelaskin2 Here’s the Skinny
In a sea of iPods, where everyone from little Tommy to Grandma Jean is toting around their own music, it’s hard to stand out. At a holiday get-together with my family, we have a good 5-6 iPods sitting on the counter, not to mention the various MacBooks scattered on the dining room table. It usually takes a while for me to find the gadget that belongs to me, and it involves turning it on (or opening it up), which cuts into my precious time set aside for obsessing over Google Earth.
Thanks to Gelaskins, my problem finding which electronic baby is mine, has disappeared. GelaSkins Inc. has created cool skins for laptops, iPods, and more, that will not only make them stand out in a crowd, but also protect them without being bulky or ugly.  The skins are made with premium grade 3M vinyl, and contain patented micro-channels within the adhesive so you don’t get that annoying bubbling so often found with other brands. Gelaskins has real artists working on these, so perusing their extensive collection is like peeking inside uber-creative minds. If you’re feeling deep and poetic, you can go with this one, or if you prefer funky with a little anime vibe, pick this one.  Of course, if the classics are more your taste, this Monet does not disappoint. I’ll be asking Santa to get some for the whole family, so we’ll finally be able to tell all our Apple’s apart.

Win it!
We have some GelaSkins for the fellow iPod junkies among us! To enter, send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight Dec. 06, with Gel as your subject and let us know if you'll be decking out an iPhone, iPod Touch or Classic.

Pediped Footwear

December 05, 2007

Pediped So That’'s Why They Make Baby Shoes

I never understood why so many mama's insisted on putting shoes on their little infant’s feet. My thought was always that if they weren't in the business of walking, why put something on their feet? But, boy was I wrong. After the birth of my son, I couldn't help but be mesmerized by all of the tiny little shoes and boots that so many companies make. I would snatch up every pair of fancy black dress shoes, cool sporty tennis shoes, and all so grown up brown casual Sunday best shoes that I could find. The only problem was that the more I loved them, the more my son didn't. I came to discover that none of those shoes were comfortable for him. They were either too stiff or too heavy, leaving him an unhappy camper while his feet were imprisoned inside of them. Mama started to think, “there must be something better out there- and sure enough, Mama was right.

Pediped’'s motto is “"The next best thing to bare feet”" and it couldn't be more true! Their footwear have two layer’s of premium, non-toxic ECO-grade leather plus a 3mm foam cushion on the soles, leaving them flexible enough to keep baby moving freely. Cushion equals comfy for the little guys, while non-toxic equals happy for mom. And Pediped footwear provides support and protection during the developmental stages of baby’s feet, from the initial crawl to the very first steps.

Pediatricians recommend that children up to the age of 2 either go barefoot or wear soft, pliable shoes like Pediped's. And this mama won't argue; because this company gives me the best of both worlds! Cool shoes that are actually GOOD for those ever growing feet.

With the fashion-forward styles that Pediped’ offers and the fact that baby likes them too, is reason enough for me. I personally love the Andrew [$39], it's just the perfect pair to keep those little toes cozy on chilly days. But I must say that if I had a baby girl, the Giselle [$30] would definitely be covering her little feet. And we hear they'll be covering bigger feet come 2008!

Win it!

We're giving away two pairs of Pediped's, a pair of Liam's (6/12 months) for one lucky boy and Faith (12/18 months) for one gorgeous gal. To enter, send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by Midnight December 05, with Pediped as your subject. Let us know the name of the family behind the footwear and which pair you'd like.

Img_678880_1_0 As the outside temps are falling quickly, and we find ourselves lighting fires in our fireplaces, revving up the furnaces and opting to stay indoors, it’s important to make sure our homes are in tip top shape to carry us through the winter.  Since we at Mama Speaks want you to be funky and not in a funk, we’ve compiled some of the best winterizing tips from around the web to save you some money and save the Earth some grief.
A Good Seal (sorry, not the singer)--If you add up all the hidden air leaks in your home, they can equal a hole the size of an open window — and can lead to higher energy bills by allowing heat to escape and causing your system to work harder to keep you comfortable. This makes home sealing one of the first and most important steps you can take to reduce home energy costs year-round. Sealing air leaks and adding insulation-paying special attention to your attic and basement, where the biggest gaps and cracks are often found-will keep warm air inside where it belongs and help your equipment perform more efficiently. Weather-strip any doors or windows. A tight seal means low energy bills. Do it yourself or hire a contractor.  I’m thinking option B!
Check It--Dirt and neglect are the number one causes of heating and cooling system failure (as this mama can attest, since our furnace broke the first time we turned it on this winter--good times). Equipment maintenance is one of the most important steps you can take to keep your heating system at peak performance. Schedule a fall check-up of your heating system with a licensed contractor. Also, clean or change your system's air filter once a month to prevent increased energy costs and system failure.  Finally, assess your snow removal equipment. Is it in working condition? Do you need to replace a shovel, buy a pick or invest in a new bag of salt? Stock up now and breathe easy when storm season hits.
Energy is a Star--Look for the ENERGY STAR when purchasing new products for your home. Found on more than 50 types of products from heating and cooling equipment, appliances, electronics, and lighting to windows and new homes, the ENERGY STAR means you are getting the most energy-efficient product that will not only save money on energy bills, but also help protect our environment.
Be a Fan of Fans--Even in the winter your ceiling fan can help improve your comfort. Most fans have a switch which allows you to reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at low speed in the clockwise direction. This produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space.  Fans more=Furnace less=Happy planet.
Gut Your Gutters--Once the leaves fall, remove them and other debris from your home's gutters -- by hand, by scraper or spatula, and finally by a good hose rinse -- so that winter's rain and melting snow can drain. Clogged drains can form ice dams, in which water backs up, freezes and causes water to seep into the house, the Insurance Information Institute says. As you're hosing out your gutters, look for leaks and misaligned pipes. Also, make sure the downspouts are carrying water away from the house's foundation, where it could cause flooding or other water damage.

Happy Efficient Winter!

The First Adventures of Incredible You

December 03, 2007

Story The Greatest Story Ever Told

Our bookshelves are filled with stories that tell tall tales. Tales of imaginary adventures, featuring incredible creatures and characters that seem to become part of our everyday lives. In fact, I'm certain that my son thinks Max is his long lost brother.

How cool would it be to read a story with character's that were part of your everyday lives? Thanks to our newest book, I've discovered the most incredible character is you. The First Adventures of Incredible You, immediately became the most requested title in our house. This hardcovered book can be completely personalized for your child and includes not only your little one's name, but the people and places that are important in your lives.

The simple order form makes it easy to input info from your child's favorite park to favorite friend, and if you happen to be buying a book for a child who's potty schedule you don't know by heart, the default options and examples will ensure you still get a good read. Take a peak at the preview and you'll see how the rhyming lines and colorful illustrations add to the fun, and while Mom and Dad might notice that certain personalized parts make for awkward sentence rhythm, your little one will be too enthralled that you just mentioned his favorite zoo to make much of your twisted tongue. The best thing is that by carefully choosing their words "The Sarah's" have created a book that will work for any child, in any sort of family.

At $33 plus shipping this is one pricey book, but one look at your little one's face as you read about him and his best friend "jumping in puddles and splashing away", will guarantee you've got your readings worth.

Cause of the Week - Project Xavier

Christmasx_2

Any parent who has had a sick, hospitalized child knows how trying it can be and any mom who has given birth to a preemie knows the roller-coaster of emotion, the progress and setbacks, the questions of if your baby will even make it home, all too well. And while all of this is more than a full plate alone it can be compounded when it's happening during the holidays.

Our editor, Ashlee, gave birth to her son Xavier in December 2005, 12 weeks too soon. Tiny and sick, struggling to survive, they celebrated their first Christmas with little celebration at all. Thankfully, little Xavier will be turning 2 soon and has grown to be the happiest, healthiest little man, but that first Christmas has made the holiday forever changed.

Needing to give back somehow, Ashlee and her family formed Project Xavier, which is dedicated to providing support and assistance to preemies and their families. While they are available year-round, their holiday initiative, Operation Christmas is their heart and soul. Operation Christmas strives to bring a little bit of normalcy to those celebrating their holiday in the NICU by providing traditional Christmas dinners and gifts for babies, families and the dedicated staff providing care for them all.

Project X is currently working with hospitals in Northwest Indiana and has begun to work with Mom's across the country to spread Operation Christmas to hospitals in their communities. You can help by making a donation or purchasing an item on their wish list. Such a little thing to bring a special something to the tiniest of lives!

Night Time Pals by Lumisource

December 01, 2007

3x_ntp_soupysnail Light the Way

Bedtime can be a hectic and stressful time for parents and kids alike.  If it's not the screaming in the bath, it's the crying over pajamas, the arguing about which book to read or the demanding of yet another drink.  One thing I can always count on to get everybody back to the routine is our little Soupy the Snail light by Lumisource. Once we turn on Mr. Soupy, everyone knows to get under the covers and quiet down.  The kids might not listen to me all the time, but Mr Soupy is never ignored.  He’s the perfect “trigger” we need to get back on track, and the soft warm glow Mr Soupy gives us is just enough to be able to see the room, without having an intrusive bright light keeping everyone awake.
Lumisource has an extensive line of night time pals, ranging from Harriet the Hippo to Ernie the Elephant. All the pals are made from Kumo translucent paper, and the electric cord can be easily removed to make the pal a decorative accent to baby’s room.  Be aware--the tops of these little lamps are open to tiny fingers, and the lamp should be put high enough that a rogue pinky won’t get burned.
Check out all the pals to find one that fits with your family, and watch as bedtime get a little bit warmer, a little bit sweeter, and whole lot easier

Win it!
How about a Soupy to light your way? Send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 01, with Lumisource as your subject.
