KnotWud

Knotwud It’s Like Wood, Only Knot

We try and stick to a very limited plastic toy policy in our house – it’s a limited policy because my husband and I stick to it, the Grandparents don’t. Fortunately we had Santa on our side who coincidentally swapped out the plastic offenders for their wooden associates.  But wood isn’t entirely innocent in this house either.  My son has an arm, which he often reminds us by fastballing his favorite wooden car at our heads.

So what’s left?  Maybe the answer lies somewhere in between cheap plastic and wooden weaponry with KnotWüd, a complete line of foam toys.  With multi-colored foam pieces layered together, it has the look of real wood-grain, without any black eyes.  Our son loves his Train and Caboose set [$10] but at 2 ½ years he’s mouthing and chewing on more than when he had a reason too.  After noticing some teeth imprints and mysterious chunks missing, playtime with KnotWüd should be closely supervised especially when recommended for 18 months and up.

Although the intended audience didn’t seem to mind, I found the pliability of the foam particularly frustrating because it was a little difficult to snap the tops into place and keep them there.  But if I was strictly judging by the amount of playtime this little toy set has received, it’s flawless.  The several varieties of foam construction blocks would be a nice alternative and eliminate the frustration even if it is on the parent’s end.  Plus, getting hit with a load of foam blocks is not nearly as painful as the other option.

Natural Mat

January 29, 2008

Naturalmat Catching Z's Chemical Free

You want only the best for your baby- washing their clothes in safe detergent, making sure their air is clean, and that their toys are sanitized and lead-free. And anything that comes into their mouth or onto their skin is sure to be free of chemicals or toxins. But what about where they sleep, where they spend a significant amount of time- experts say babies sleep 60% of their first year... how safe is their mattress?

Natural Mat mattresses are 100% natural, unlike what you’ll find at most baby stores. Unfortunately, although legal, most mattresses contain chemicals that are dangerous for the skin and respiratory organs, and offer little support and poor circulation. Natural Mat’s organic bedding is non-allergenic and anti-dust mite, with superior ventilation, allowing a constant circulation of air. Crib mattresses are available in latex, mohair and coco and you'll find the latex option in a twin, for safe sleeping wherever your sleepy heads take their rest.

Cause of the Week - National Blood Donor Month

January 28, 2008

Blood_donor It runs through our veins and sustains our lives but we don't think about it too much. Well, we don't think about it until we're losing it, or we need, or someone we love is in need of it. That's my experience at least.  My son was born 2 years ago, 3 months premature and while he fought and grew his little body had a hard time keeping up with him because his blood wasn't yet replenishing itself. All of the sudden words like "blood donor" and "transfusion" were swirling around us as we fought to get our boy well.

While my husband or I would have loved to donate directly to our son, there just wasn't enough time. Thankfully, we were able to to turn to banked blood for the supplement our son so desperately needed.

More than 29 million units of blood are transfused each year. Aside from preemies, accident victims, people undergoing surgery, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer, or other diseases, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, all utilize blood. And especially in the winter months the need for donors is great.

There are only a couple of days left in National Blood Donor Month, but we encourage you to take some time out to donate at some point this year. It doesn't take long and aside from doing something good we hear you get free juice and cookies.

Jimi Wallet

Thejimi_orangeopen Slim Jim

These days most parents are trying to (or would like to) reduce the number of accoutrement's they lug around, hoping that, if nothing else, they can at least carry less of their OWN things.  I am one of those parents, and my only bag I want to carry with my diaper bag is a wristlet or something even smaller.  My problem has been that I can't fit any of my massive wallets inside these little bags, so I'm left with my credit cards, cash and other things flailing around my bag--just waiting for the right moment to go mustang.  After a couple near misses involving my cash and its jailbreak from my bag, I decided to go on a hunt for a wallet that was light, small and affordable.  I honestly didn't think this existed, but then I found the Jimi wallet.

Billed as the "wallet for people who hate wallets", the Jimi wallet [$15] is made of recycled and recyclable plastic, and fits only the bare essentials.  It has a money clip on the inside to secure the benjamins (which can come out, to go even more streamlined), and comes in a plethora of great colors.  It's water resistant, so it is a great find for you sports or fitness buffs.  Check out the Jimi website for other smart inventions.

Win it!
We hear it won't be making it's debut until Valentine's Day but we happen to have brand new Pink Jimi wallet for one lucky reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Jimi as your subject. Giveaway ends midnight January 28.

Burt's Bees

January 26, 2008

Burtsbees

Mind Your Beeswax

We all know and love Burt’s Bees. It’s a company we can trust with natural baby care products for our little ones, and great lip balms and lotions for the Mamas. But until recently, I had never tried Burt’s Bees for my total skin care routine.

Burt’s Bees offers 16 new products featuring the fresh Radiance Exfoliating Body Wash [$8] that has now become part of my shower regime. While it does exfoliate, it is not rough on your skin- but rather creamy! I don’t know how they do it! The scent is subtle and clean, as it should be. I’ve noticed instant results- my super soft skin approves! If creamy is not your thing, then try it in the Body Bar [$4]. Glow from head to toe and try out the Radiance collection with the Radiance Kit [$15], filled with 7 new products.

I fancy the simplicity of Burt’s Bees and the fact that you can buy it online or even at the grocery store! Which, as a matter of fact, is where I picked up the Beeswax Moisturizing Day Crème [$12] that is now my new absolute favorite for my face! Burt’s Bees products are never heavy and are always earth friendly, with affordability like no other natural personal care products out there! And they want to keep the industry accountable, setting regulations and standards to keep what we use on our bodies safe and with honest packaging and truthful advertising. Check out how you can support Burt’s Bees Bill For Setting The National Standard. Truly the bee’s knees!

Stellarocco

January 25, 2008

Stellarocco Rocco on!

I’m a tee shirt and jeans type of nature gal, but still like to bring out my girly side, too. The feminine, botanical-inspired collection of tees by Stellarocco are perfect for everyday comfort but with just the right style.

I’ve already decided that mall shopping for myself is just a thing of the past- I’m not in high school any more! So it’s about time to update my wardrobe accordingly… thankfully Stellarocco designers (and sisters!) Dina & Kate dreamed up a brand of wearable art that is affordable, modern, and also sweatshop free.

Choose short or long sleeved designs made with delicate patterns and soft cotton. I love the thin, lightweight feel- great for layering or pairing with a sweater if you’re chilly. Or by itself in just the right weather. Lately obsessed with all things birds, I’m equally crazy about the Modern Bird boatneck top in lemon meringue [$28]. The short sleeved Orchids tee in coffee [$26] is as soft as they can get, and I love that it’s longer in the waist. Stellarocco’s shirts are made for womanly curves without low-cut necklines and compromising modesty. Do be sure to order at least one size up as they are pre-shrunk and run small. Always enjoy free shipping on orders in the US- such a bonus to the already fantastic price points.

Win it!
One Mama Speaks reader can cozy up with a Stellarocco tee! To enter, send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight January 26. Please include your size and address.

Shining Stars

January 24, 2008

  • Petunia_2 The Mama Speaks Team would like to congratulate all of the actors, actresses, directors and producers for their recent nominations for the Academy Awards. An extra special high-five to Ellen Page and the film Juno, for their excellence in the theater as well. But it seems as though there was someone else left out of the spotlight. Don'€™t worry, you didn't go unnoticed Petunia. In the film Juno, there was a cameo appearance by Petunia Pickle Bottom's Tutu Roll Boxy Backpack. If there were a category for "Most Beautiful Diaper Bag in a Movie"€, you would definitely take home the Oscar.
  • Life-Size Kids, is an online store that is based off of the boutiques located inside of Fred Segal in LA. For those of us itching to dress our little tots in the same incredibly fashionable and stylish clothing lines of the kids of celebrities like Kate Moss and Madonna, yet don'€™t quite live close enough to Melrose to shop in person, Life-Size Kids will get you the same stuff, without the in-person shopping experience. Sorry, you won't be rubbing elbows the celebs by buying online, but you can always nickname your kids "Lila"€ and "Rocco"€ for the effect.
  • You might think that since celebrities are rolling in the dough, they only buy the most expensive and elaborate strollers on the market. Not so! Patrick Dempsey and wife Jillian are big fans of the Combi Twin Savvy LX Double Stroller for their twin boys.
  • Unfortunately, stretch marks are just one side effect so many of us mommy'€™s have had to endure due to the ever-growing belly with the precious ever-growing bundle inside. Not to fear though, celebrity mama's like Carnie Wilson and Jennie Garth have discovered the natural goodness of Tummy Honey Butter by Bella B, a product made to prevent and fade stretch marks.
  • I have not found another shoe that I can say I love more than a Pediped. Not only do WE love the Pedipeds, but so do the celeb's, like Matt Damon and wife, Luciana. They have been spotted strolling about town with daughter, Isabella while she wore the Abigail, in pink.

Mrs. Meyer's

Meyers_2 Teething Clean

Watching my baby gnaw on practically every surface in the house, I'm feverishly searching for something to keep things clean--and germ free--without exposing the wee babe to a bunch of toxic junk.  Of course a  little harmless dirt isn't the problem, living in a house with all males has showed me the phenomena of how dirty things can get with everyone still being healthy.  What I'm talking about are those harsh chemical cleaners that are piled under your sinks, in your garage, and more.  I know you bleach-worshipers are out there, so how about giving these healthier alternatives a try?  Chemicals in the home are a huge source of allergic issues, and gnawing on toys that have been cleaned with typical cleaning products makes me shudder when I think about what's being ingested into little bellies..

Mrs Meyer's comes to the rescue with their soft and fresh Baby Blossom Surface Spray [$5]. It's so gentle, and the scent (if there really is one) is extremely fresh and clean smelling.  I love to spray it on the high chair tray and high counter throughout the day as we gunk up every square inch available.  With my baby teething, I was thrilled to see that the surface spray contains organic essential oils of orange and lemon.  I can't even imagine what we'd do if we had to wash every thing in the sink, because saving time by just spraying and wiping has become addictive and swift.

Check out Mrs Meyer's other products for baby, including soapy things, lotion-y things and laundry things.  You even get  a coupon for $5 off your order of $25 or more by signing up for their newsletter.  Check out all the Mrs Meyer's products to keep your home clean and healthy and you'll be breathing easier.

Poison Plastic - Green Speak and Eco Friendly

January 23, 2008

Pvc In addition to all the lead paint woe's of late, that plastic still lurking in some of our playrooms has us Mama's all riled up. Some plastics are safer than others, but surprisingly the most hazardous plastic of all, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is still finding it's way into toys and gear all over the place.

PVC, also know as the poison plastic, is a danger from the moment it's created, and continues to plague us while in our homes and in our trash by releasing chemicals such as mercury, dioxins, and phthalates, which may pose irreversible life-long health threats such as cancer and birth defects.

So, where is PVC found? EVERYWHERE! In addition to toys you will find PVC in bottles, strollers, utensils, shower curtains, mattress covers, diaper covers, and more products than we could ever list here. Be on the look out for recyclable plastic #3 and plastic products marked with a "V" as both are indicators of PVC.

What's a mama to do?! Once you read over the list of products you will see the how daunting it would be to completely rid one's home of PVC, but it is possible. And thankfully affordable PVC alternatives are popping up all over the place and a huge help in taking that first step in our home is keeping the kids safe.

While the EU banned completely banned the use of use of PVC in children's products in 2005, aside from agreeing to remove  two phthalates from PVC rattles, teethers, pacifiers and baby bottle nipples in 1998, the US is seriously lacking in legislation to protect us from this plastic.

Keep in mind that if a product stinks (literally) it probably does stink and isn't safe. Our archives are full of PVC-free safe products and of course there are more on the way.

Baby Banz

Skibanzblack Protect Those Peepers

Since most of us are freezing our booties off in what seems like the longest winter ever, I'm sure I'm not alone when I have a hard time remembering the brightness of the oh-so-elusive sun.  Day after day of dreary and gloomy skies does not make me think of sunglasses, but if I were to head out the door to my nearest ski (or sledding) hill, I'd have a wicked hankering for some shades to counter the blinding whiteness.

Baby Banz has come up with a great way to keep shades on our littlest kiddos, who's eyes are the most vulnerable when out in the sun in any climate.  They have adorable styles (not only for snow, but for the beach, pool, and stylish gals as well!) and each one has a neoprene (the material used in wetsuits) strap that is worn across the back of baby's head to keep the glasses snug and comfy.  With shatterproof materials, adjustable sizes, a 6 month warranty, and the ability to replace the lens with prescription shades, this company has seriously thought of everything.
Here's some food for thought: did you know that children don't have the filters in their eyes to block out harmful UV rays until they are 8-9 years old?  Just throwing on pair of every-day shades won't help, but in fact might make things worse.  Since the iris opens more to allow more light in (while wearing sunglasses), the eye is even more vulnerable and could potentially lead to more damage to the child's eye if you don't have the right lens protecting their peepers.  Scary, huh?
Baby Banz lenses block out the entire spectrum of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays from the sun, but do you know what all those A-B-C's mean? UVA rays are thought to be more harmful to the skin – they cause sunburn and get below the outer layer of skin. UVB rays are the rays thought to be the worst on the eye and causing damage to the retina and lens with overexposure and under-protection. UVC rays are extremely dangerous but do not reach the earth's surface due to absorption in the atmosphere.  As our atmosphere gets worse and worse, more UV rays are getting through and affecting our bodies.  Protecting those baby blues (or greens, browns or hazels...) is something we can, and should, all get behind.

Win it!
We have a pair of Ski Banz to giveaway to one sunny babe or tot! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Banz as your subject. Giveaway ends midnight January 23.

Blue Eye Boy

January 22, 2008

Beb_newlogo

If you hadn't noticed we're a little heavy on the boys here at Mama Speaks. Among our 6 Mama's we have 12 kids (+1 on the way!), 10 of which are boys. Boys all boys. And I don't know how many of you out there share our male to female ratio's but if you even have one boy in your midst you know how hard shopping can be. Enter the infant/toddler/child section at any store and you will be greeted with a slew of cute and fashionable girly wears and one leeetle, teeny section of boy clothes. Most of which are solid and plain or covered in trucks or sports paraphernalia. Yay.

And so we high tail it to the internets where boyness abounds thanks to shops like Blue Eye Boy. "At Blue Eye Boy you will find durable toddler and youth size apparel that can withstand any hard day of play, yet compliment your little guy's unique sense of style. You will also find strong well-built toys and unique boy decor items." They're always stocked up on our favorite boy brands like the always hard to find Knuckleheads and have their own line of necklaces for the big boys (that we will under NO circumstance refer to as jewelry!)

So whether you have one little boy or 10 head on over to our favorite Blue Eyed boutique and enjoy that you won't find any pink, ribbons or ruffles anywhere (unless it's for Mama of course!)

Win it!

SlingEZee

Slingezee The Slinging is Easy

If you've ever been brave enough to Google slings or baby carriers, you know that there are as many contraptions out there as there are people. And even if you narrow it down to slings you have ring slings, pouch slings, open tail, closed tail, padded, unpadded- yadda-yadda-ya... Unpadded, open tailed slings are all the rage of late, but Baby Holdings, Inc., SlingEZee [$49-$55] is a rare sling, both padded and with a shorter closed tail that can keep up with the rest.

Maybe it's that this sling was my intro to babywearing as a nanny many years ago, but I've always been a closet fan of the SlingEZee. With padding at the shoulder and along the rails many Mama's swear that padded slings like this are a step above in comfort. To be honest, I don't notice much difference and have been occasionally frustrated with the extra bulk. I've found that depending on the weight of the babe you're toting the shoulder padding becomes completely compressed and therefore obsolete. And while I'm not a big fan of the padded rails along my back, when my son became the chunkiest baby I'd ever seen, the padding under his chubtastic thighs allowed him to sit comfortably at my hip.

The closed tail sling allows you to easily adjust the pouch and fit of your sling with one tug of the tail but also means you need to sure to order the size that's perfect for you and might limit any sling sharing between mom and dad. There are many styles to choose from, from classic solid basics that go with anything to the latest design collection featuring fun bold prints. The Chocolate Damask patten is my by far fave and I love the way the print camouflages the padding.

So yeah, I'm still a little on the fence about jumping into the world of the padded ring-sling, but as they go, I think Parenting Concepts are right in saying they offer the premier product.

Win it!
We have the Chocolate Damask sling pictured in Petite for one lucky Mama! To enter email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight January 22 with SlingEZee as your subject.

Cause of the Week - International Ceserean Awareness Network

January 21, 2008

Ican I Think ICAN, I Think ICAN

If you would have told me during my pregnancy I would be having a cesarean birth, I would have thought “it doesn’t matter, as long as my baby gets out of my body and into my arms safe and sound.” Well 2 ½ years since my unplanned cesarean, I’m still grieving the birth I had always envisioned.

It’s true with the help of cesarean, my son did arrive safely, it seems my trust in my obstetrician was the only thing damaged in the process.  While necessary cesareans have saved many lives, my birth was a textbook case of a low-risk pregnancy gone wrong thanks to lack of education and a trigger happy physician.  While my physical scar has faded greatly, the emotional scarring is still fresh as the day my son was born.  And this is one reason the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) was created, to not only be an advocate for maternal-child health but to provide ongoing support for those of us who gave birth by cesarean, whether out of necessity or default.

ICAN is strictly a volunteer-run organization.  With ICAN parents can find the education and helpful links and resources they may not be told otherwise.  You can read about the latest alarming cesarean statistics and up to date information on hospitals, a must for those looking for a better birthing experience.  Most importantly you’ll find community. You can find local chapters of ICAN in your area which will provide ongoing support and a safe place to share your experience among those who can relate.

This April which is Cesarean Awareness month, I’ll be donning my burgundy ribbon.  I’ve carried around the guilt for long enough and with the help of ICAN I’m seeing it’s time to let go of the guilt and trade it in for information and choice.  I’m not sure if there are more births in my future but one thing I am sure of, if there is a birth, there is opportunity for a VBAC.  And if there is no VBAC, it will not be out of ignorance.

Bugabike

Bugbike Sweet Ride

No training wheels needed here for some cool moves on the Bugabike [$285] by Sabamba. Biker dudes & chicks ages 2-6 can ride in style while their bike travels with foot action only. The Bugabike teaches the bare basics of riding- it's all about balance, pushing, and just figuring how how things move. The easily adjustable seat and frame sized just right will grow with your toddler until they're -or maybe you're- ready for the pedaling & braking kind of bicycle.

We're already crazy about wooden toys, so it just makes sense we'd love our Bugabike Nature [$307] so much. Made of strong birch plywood and steel rimmed wheels, and in colors subtle and hip enough, you probably won't be banishing this bike to the garage. Ours is a new staple in the living room (thanks to non-marking tires!) And it's just so nice to look at! Oh, and um, our precious little ride has already passed the attack-of-the-artist test. (To my horror and then delight that the dark blue crayon wiped right off!!!!) An investment it is, at a few hundred bucks, but you can trust that it will be around for quite a while- Sabamba promises a three year guarantee against defects.  And did I mention it's just so nice to look at?!

The Bugabike is compact and convenient to travel along wherever you go. Give 'em a break from the stroller and burn some energy. Let your little rider Bugabike-it on walks through the neighborhood, trips to the museum, and adventures at the zoo. Or just let them ride it through the house like I do! That is until they start using my pillows for stunts...

Butterfly Kisses

January 18, 2008

Bfk_150x150

Butterfly Kisses nestled in downtown Valparaiso, brings big city style home to you. One of the reasons I fell in love with this quaint boutique for the first time was because they offered just as much chic and trend for the boys as they did the girls. It wasn’t all frou frou and ruffles and then one little section of cutesy for the baby boys in the corner. It was here that I was first introduced to Tea Collection and Pediped a few years back. More recently I am excited by their addition of rockin’ Kingsley tees and See Kai Run shoes.  And it’s not just for babies. Many styles all the way up to child size 6x-7 are available in the contemporary apparel featured at Butterfly Kisses.

Owner Jennifer Ziemkiewicz puts thought into the quality and features of each and every product she carries. The clothing, shoes, and now new toy line available at her boutique will last over time. She focuses on offering items that you can not find most anywhere else, such as the much sought-after BabyLegs and Plan Toys. It’s about being unique and not like everyone else. Through the personalized service and special treatment to each person that walks through those doors, friendships are formed. I seem to think this is how business was originally meant to be.

Just as Butterfly Kisses is a distinctive emporium for children’s fashions, it definitely leaves the Mamas satisfied, too. I hardly ever have anything to put in a diaper bag anymore, but I am still trying to justify needing this Stork Sak Emily Shoulder Bag [$170]. For Moms-to-be, there is no finer maternity wardrobe than the one you’ll find here. With superior designers like Inca Mama, Olian, and Maternal America, baby bumps look like they’re just off the runway.

Sign up for the mailing list when you drop in for a visit so you can always be up to date with the latest happenings, coupons, and specials. I’ve found their sales to be out of this world if you can get in there right on time. Shop online here for some of the products available in store. But if you get the chance, do stop inside for personalized service and exclusive goodies you’ll not find just anywhere else.

Roomies

Roomies Not Your Grandma's Rag Doll

My boys are always looking for new "friends" to snuggle and play with, be it a sweet teddy or a funky giraffe.  Recently they started asking me why the store doesn't have "dollies" for them.  They want a friend to drag around by the leg, who will always be there when they're sick on the couch or having a hard time catching Z's at night.  Is that really so much to ask for in this pink princess world?

Well, thanks to the Roomie Rag Doll [$24], my search is over.  These silly peeps are unique and crazy, just the way my boys like their things to be.  These dolls are short on the pretty, but heavy on style as each one comes with it's own name and certain tragic comedy.  There's Chubby Bubby, the jocular constable and Jumping Jack, the would-be burglar.  You can also pick Pity Paul, who with his cast and black eye has more than a tale or two to share. Hilly Billy seems to be that special chap who, with his super hero cape, is certain to march to the beat of his own drum.  Not to be ignored, the funky lass in your life will enjoy adopting Polka Olga or my favorite anti-princess, Fabulous FuFu.  Her golden crown was no doubt earned with plenty of moxy to spare.

You can find these supercool friends at Vessel, one of our favorite places to find kicky modern goods.

Boon Feeding

January 16, 2008

Boonfeedline

My boob loving baby was a little late to the solid food scene. Him not showing much interest until he was nearly a year old means I missed out on a lot of those sloppy spoon feeding sessions. And as much as I am/was/will be happy to nurse him, you all know how much us Mama's anticipate and enjoy the grown-upedness (yes, that's a new one) of babies foodie meals.

One of our favorite makers of mod baby gear, Boon, have recently launched a line of feeding goodies to make mealtime even more fun. From the Squirt [$8], their ingenious baby food dispensing spoon, to the adaptable Benders  [$6] and toddler ready Modwear [$5], your little one will never miss a bite. My dip happy toddler finds the Groovy [$13], well, groovy and any Mama will love the Catch [$7] which lives up to it's name at intercepting spills.

If you want to get my little one really excited just bring out the Fluid [$6]. Finally a cup with a hold that makes sense to tiny hands! The donut shaped design makes things easy for double fisters and the easy flow is great for older babies and toddlers. The two piece design eliminates the chance of losing pesky valves and still seals securely. While touted as a "no-spill" cup, within a few minutes any babe will be able to figure out that a couple of shakes cause a little drippy sprinkler effect. Which is of course great fun, but means this one might be best left at home (definitely not for tossing in a diaper bag).

And even though we were slightly disappointed that the swiveling lid would not stay secure on our Snack Ball [$7] (meaning that not only did snacks get smooshed, but pummeled and evenly distributed over ever surface of our day bag) we are singing the praises of this little culinary collection. The prices are pleasing and we're up for anything that makes feeding time more fun.

Win it!
Boon has a Fluid cup for one thirsty dude (or gal). To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight January 16 with Drink Up as your subject.

Bembo's Zoo

January 15, 2008

Dragon Free Day at the Zoo

Much to our child’s dismay, we try to limit screen time, both TV and PC. Can you tell we're still on our first kid? Yes there are plenty of educational shows out there that will only partially rot your brain but nothing replaces a good old fashion book to teach the ABCs. But even we can admit it is nice to change it up occasionally by clicking on over to Bembo's Zoo and watch letters come to life.

Unlike other programs which are geared specifically towards children, Bembo’s Zoo appeals to all ages.  It doesn't have any cartoon characters but what it lacks in annoying silly songs, it makes up for with visually appealing graphics, a minimal color palette and modern design. No this isn't something that is so modern only the parents like, it’s even at the top of our two year olds list. We both love watching the letters float and twist and multiply to take the form of corresponding animals, D (Dragon) being the current running favorite.

Now unless your kid is handy with a mouse this is one site you'll have to navigate. No plopping him down in front of the computer by himself for hours, which sounds so tempting, but this will encourage dialog about the visually captivating lesson at hand. It’s so captivating we wouldn't be surprised if you are caught at the office brushing up on you own alphabet skills sans kid.

If you happen to have more of a no screen time policy, you don't have to miss out either. The hardcopy book is also available and if it’s anything like the website, it’s a must for any home library and art collection.

SkuutPowered by Foot

You won't find any tricycles in this house. Three wheels? Who needs 'em. And pedals? Maybe in a few years. Right now we are all about body power and that's all a kid needs to Skuut their way to happiness.

Created my a mom and pop for the 2-5 set, this gorgeous wooden balance bike [$90] will give tots and tykes the perfect primer in all things bike. Little by little they can learn to  balance, steer and coordinate all while rolling along like the big kids. The handlebars are perfect for tiny grips and the adjustable padded seat will easily grow along with it's rider.

We haven't attempted to skuut along those mean suburban streets yet (they're a bit snowy) but my little guy has been making laps of joy around the house for weeks and when he's ready to hop up on a traditional two wheeler I have a feeling our transition will be smooth sailing skuuting.

Nixon Vega, Baby!

In the age of iPod's, cell phones and modern convenience it seems watches have gone by the wayside. At any given time I have at least two gadgets on my person that happen to tell time, there's always one in the car and of course there's that clock in my kitchen that occasionally cooks things. So, a watch, something else I have to remember to put on and take off, just hasn't been priority.

That said, even I have found The Vega from Nixon [$60-$100] impossible to pass up. In all it's gorgeous contradictions this chunky timepiece is smooth and sleek, offering up modern style with a hint of that retro feel. The stretchy polycarbonate band creates a custom one-size fit without the use of buckles or clasps. And the 3 hand Japanese quartz ticker will keep you moving right on time.

The Vega comes in classic black, several bright bold colors and the latest faux wood style all of us are drooling over. I think it's obvious we're wrist (?) over heals for this one, but if it's not the one for you, no worries, Nixon has countless other watches happy to tell your time.

Jujubee Just the Bag for Me

I LOVE to shop, and I mean LOVE and everyone can tell you that my weaknesses are an expensive pair of pointy-toed heels or a good handbag. Since my only child is a boy, I don’t think I get away with somehow justifying the shoe obsession I have to him, but I can definitely spend our hard earned income on a new diaper bag. I will admit it, I have 5 different diaper bags (and he is only 9 months old!), and frankly I don’t know what the norm is for new mama’s. Do you just have one or two or ten? Or do just toss those few necessities into your own purse? Well, besides being a consumer extraordinaire, I am also a “just-in-case” kind of mama. I always make sure I have anything and everything my son may need at any given time on any given day. I pack far too many diapers, way too much food, and every single medicine or remedy he might need, even if we are just going down the street to see his friends. Some say that I will grow beyond this, particularly when I have more children, but for now, this is just how I roll. Thank goodness Ju Ju Be Diaper Bags are here to save me. They understand my needs, whether it is in the storage OR in the style department.

Ju Ju Be Diaper bags are seriously awesome! Just one of the Standard Features in each bag are the million little pockets and compartment to hold anything you might need for your little guy or gal. Added to nearly every bag is a Mommy Pocket, a safe and secure place to put your phone, your keys, and much more. Not only are the pockets convenient, the shoulder straps are oh-so-comfortable. Did I say comfortable? The matching changing pad adds a level of comfort to on-the-go changing too. The pad has soft touch memory foam tucked inside, leaving little bodies evenly supported while eliminating uncomfortable pressure points.

Ju Ju Be even teamed up with a few really essential companies (like Teflon, Thinsulate, and AgION) in order to bring you the top of the line technology on all levels. The exterior fabrics on all of their bags are coated in Teflon in order to fight off stains and spills that are bound to try to ruin the pretty patterns and colors they offer. Thinsulate is added to each and every bottle pocket in order to keep the cold things cold and the warm things warm. And if you haven’t heard of AgION yet, here’s the lowdown. AgION is an anti-microbial coating that covers all interior fabrics of each Ju Ju Be Bag. It keeps those nasty little things from growing in places that even SuperMom can’t see.

There are many more amazing features of the Ju Ju Be Diaper Bags (far more than I have time or room to mention here), so check out their website for more information. You can’t actually purchase the bags directly from the website, but here is a list of places where you can. And it’s okay to make Ju Ju Be Diaper Bags just one more obsession on your list, I know I have.

Nellie's Laundry Products

SodaTell 'em Nugget Sent You

I have laundry issues. The fact that I can never seem to get caught up jumps to the top of the list, but I'll save that for another post. My enemy number one(s) at this point are sensitive skin, the good ol' environment and winter cling. Three tiny little demons that seem to combine to create laundry hell.

We can't do fragrance in this house, and while I've come to accept that clean doesn't have a smell (at least not in the form of lavender or wildflowers) finding a fragrance free, earth friendly detergent that works consistently has left me switching brands and methods over and over and over again. And then that dryer! Do you know how hard it is to find a dryer sheet without the smell of a funky fresh summer day? And so we go without, accept slightly stiff and scratchy clothes, until winter comes along and ruins it all. I can't do cling!
Balls
Well, thank you Nellie's! Nellie's Laundry Products offer natural solutions for today's laundry needs in a way that makes me want to don an apron and park it in front of my machines all day. Seriously. Nellie's Laundry Nuggets are pre-measured pockets of clean. Just pop one in and you are done. Unfortunately we hear they're not standing up too well in winter transit, but you can get the same results with their regular Laundry Soda [$19 for 100 loads], you'll just have to scoop a little. Hypoallergenic and residue free this soda has me singing praises.

For the dryer Nellie's Dryerballs [$20] are ALL the rage (believe it or not my husband is the one who suggested this one). Estimated to work for up to 1,000 loads these little blue angels bounce around in your dryer softening fabrics without the need of chemicals. And the way they lift and separate your unmentionables means air flow increases and you can cut your drying time by 25%. And that cling you ask? Gone. All gone. Nellie's site says that cling is caused by over drying so whether it's that my clothes are in and out quicker or simple getting some sense knocked into them, I'm a happy customer.

And yes, I take my laundry very seriously.

Win it!
So maybe you aren't as concerned with your wash and rinse as me, but if you'd like to see where I'm coming from send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Nellie's as your subject for your chance to win Nellie's Dryer Balls and 50 Load Laundry Soda combo. Ends midnight January 12.

Ahimsa Creations

Celinepup Not Your Mama's Monkey

When I was a kid, I distinctly recall a few of those oh-so-memorable toys. The Sit-n-Spin, the Slap Bracelets, and of course, the Sock Monkey. Now, the Sock Monkey’s of the past were simple and all pretty much looked the same. None the less, I loved my monkey, and far be it for me to deny my one and only son the joy of having one of his very own. The Sock Monkey’s of today aren’t as boring as I remember, and with a soon-to-be-Mama created organization like Ahimsa Creations, you can find a monkey (or dog or cat or rabbit) that suits your child (or even yourself) and his ever changing personality.

Each Sock Friend [$15-$30] has their own personality, attitude, and fashion sense. The fabrics and prints are vibrant, different, and one of a kind, making them the funky monkey at the next tea party. Elizabeth over at Ahimsa Creations, not only makes all of the Sock Friends by hand, she also has a deep passion for the welfare and proper treatment of animals. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word for the Buddhist philosophy of doing no harm to any living creature. This philosophy is the foundation of Ahimsa Creations and is why all of the products that she creates are strictly 100% Vegan! No wool, cashmere, leather, or fur can be found on or in any of her products. For those Vegans and Vegetarians here at Mama Speaks, that is one amazing thing that makes us love this company even more. Elizabeth creates the Friends out of vintage fabric and buttons with each and every one being strictly unique. By purchasing your new friend from Ahimsa Creations, you are guaranteed that nowhere on the planet you will find another one like him. And since everything is handmade, the items are ever changing. So making it a habit to check out the new goods is a good habit to have.

Aside from the Sock Friends, you can also find hand-sewn children’s clothes and bibs, belts made out of recycled men’s ties, hand-stitched adult T-shirts, Purses, Jewelry, and more fun and funky items to spice up your closet and your everyday life.

Ahimsa Creations is one of those companies that just makes you feel good to buy from. So go ahead and swing on over and take a look at all of the amazing hand-made items that are just calling your name, I am positive you will find something just for you (or your little one).

New West Knifeworks

January 09, 2008

Knife A Cut Above

In this second week in January, some of you will have that holiday money burning a nice and toasty hole in your pocket.  You're looking for something that you can't live without to spend that dough on, and are counting on us here at Mama Speaks to cut through the madness and give you ideas on what is the biggest bang for your buck.  Well, if you are like me and enjoy cooking for your family but can't quite get motivated because of the lack of tools in your kitchen, this is the perfect item for you.  I've been test-driving a few of the knives from New West Knifeworks, and let me tell you, I have found a whole new world I didn't know existed.  Cooking is actually fast! and fun! and I find myself trying to think of more things I can cut--just so I can use these babies.  The first pretties are Fusionwood Knives, which are made from premium Swedish High-Carbon steel.  What this means is that they are SHARP and will last you forever (thanks to the lifetime guarantee!) as long as you take care of them and sharpen regularly. The Fusionwood line has gorgeous handles (pick your color) and are made by hand, which means they're limited edition.  The Kitchen Set [$139] is the perfect way to jump-start your collection, as it includes a chopper and a pairing knife.

Upon seeing the Phoenix granite santoku [$179] for the first timeI realized that knives really are works of art.  This lovely is made with Damascus steel using the same craftsmanship the Japanese use in creating their samurai swords.  The combination creates not only a strong and supremely sharp edge, but the "swirling beauty" of the steel is a sight to behold.  The granite colored handle is gorgeous, and the weight of it in your hands will make you sing with glee as you work that salad like nobody's business.  It might seem a little pricey for one knife, but imagine--you never have to buy another knife like this again, as long as you take care of it.  New West Knifeworks even offers a "full tune-up" at no cost, which includes re-polishing and re-sharpening.  Combine that with the lifetime guarantee, and there's no denying it's worth that Christmas money, and you will wonder how you ever got by without these knives before.

Mention "Mama Speaks - Free Shipping" at checkout for free shipping on your entire order.

Punk Rock Dogg

Prd Fierce on Four Legs

There's no reason for anyone to be left out in the cold this winter and our four legged family members are no exception. If you're looking for something a little more subdued than that tu-tu Tinkerbell infamously struts around in, that still has a little more spunk than what's on the pet shop shelf,  look no further than the pages of Punk Rock Dogg.

You'll find a decent selection of simple, punk inspired tee's for pups, that suit my stubborn bully to a, well, tee. While some of the shirts aren't so G-rated the doggie skull and "Mama's little Monster" tee are all too reminiscent of the gear we choose for our human babes. And if you're into that sort of thing you and dog-breath can strut your stuff in matching style.

If your pooch is more for accessories, check out the collars, leashes, and some of the coolest (albeit kitschy) dog tags we've come across- seriously, is it weird that I'm wondering if I could get away with rocking one myself?

Pres2 Politics. One conversation you're probably avoiding like the plague at this weeks playgroup. Nevertheless, we have to dive in and see who stands where we stand and where our vote is best suited to whip this country of ours into shape. Among the hard hitting issues of foreign policy and domestic health our environment is high on the agenda this year. And while I personally think saving our planet starts well before the presidential level, decisions Mr. (or Mrs.) President makes can have a drastic impact on the state of things.

Grist, a snarky little environmental gem of a website, has a handy chart comparing where everyone stands on all issues environmental. Complete info is not readily available for every candidate out there, but you'll get the idea, it's a great place to start.

Photo Lunchbox

Box3_2 Picture Perfect Lunch

As the winter break ends and we're gearing up for the return to school, there's one item that my son is most excited about taking with him to class.  It's not his new pencils or his pristine new steno pad (the dude is serious about his paper), but his special personalized photo lunchbox that has a picture of him, his brother, and the fish they caught together last fall.  We've said goodbye to those plastic character boxes that he'd lose interest in within a nanosecond (not to mention the skeezy chemicals that were creeping their way into his food from the plastic, no doubt).  Now he'll be sporting this slick, silver box with his special picture reminding him of that fun filled time with family.

Ogg Studio not only creates adorable and beautiful photography, but they also offer these customized photo lunch boxes [$35] for every kid, or kid at heart, you can think of.  You can use more than just a digital photo, too.  Pick a print, slide, or even the kid's own adorable artwork to put on the lunchbox.  All of this may seem a little much for just a lunchbox, but its price is covered two-fold once you see these adorable boxes and the look on the face of your kids once they take one look at it.  After school, the boxes are also great to use at home as a "suitcase" for cars or dinosaurs, and also as a ramp for army men to ski off of.  Don't ask.
So, with the kickin' box taken care of, your job is almost over.  Now you just need to get them to eat what's in it.

Win it!
Who wants one?! One reader will be able to personalize to their hearts content with their very own lunchbox from Ogg Studio. Just send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Lunchbox as your subject. Ends January 08.

Adiri Natural Nurser

January 07, 2008

Adiri Next Breast Thing

Recently I found myself in the position so many breast feeding mamas have been before--wanting a night out without having to rush home to nurse.  I adore breast feeding and would never want to compromise the nursing relationship I have with my little guy, but a date night now and then isn't really too much to ask for, is it?  I have a great breast pump, so when I tried giving my baby the bottle and he refused, I was frustrated.  When I proceeded to try several other bottle types over the next few weeks, and my baby continued to refuse the bottle, I was even more frustrated.  Actually, I was panicked and saw the next couple years of date nights and "me" time floating away to that place where my sleep and my clean house ran off to as well.  This being my third child, and my first "bottle hater", I figured I was going to have to grin and bear it.  But then a shining light in the shape of a boob (and it wasn't mine) entered our lives, and once again baby and I are happy at last.  Enter the Adiri Natural Nurser Ultimate Bottle.

Adiri (who you might remember from Breastbottle Nurser fame, the original breast shaped bottle) has come out with a new bottle that is shaped like a breast, uses special vents to make sure to keep the bubbles out, and is made 100% polycarbonate-free and bisphenol-A free.  All of this in a sleek and modern design that combine to give you a bottle your BABY WILL TAKE.  I seriously can not stress enough how big of a deal this is for any of you out there that have a hard time getting baby to take a bottle (but then again, if you are struggling with this, you already know the plight of which I speak).  Even if your baby is happily taking a bottle,  getting rid of all those bottle parts and using something that is healthy for baby all at the same time is well worth the price.  The Natural Nurser [$13] is super soft and squishy and actually warms up with the warm milk (just like the breast) so your breast feeding relationship will stay healthy and long-lasting, and the baby will not get the dreaded nipple confusion everyone warned you about.

Just one Adiri Natural Nurser in your house will have you addicted and wanting to replace all those old bottles taking up precious cabinet space in your kitchen.  Don't say I didn't warn you.

Win it!
We have an Adiri Natural Nurser for one bottle-hating babe. Just send us an email (giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com) by midnight January 07 with Bottle as your subject.

Cause of the Week - Women for Women International

Wfw For Women, By Women

Some of the worst victims of the various wars being waged all over the globe are often over-looked or forgotten.  Those are the women, the wives, the mothers who have to go on with life without their loved ones, their homes or even their villages.  One benefit (believe it or not!) to the conflicts we've been fighting lately, is that we now have access to the women in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq.  Women are the glue that hold these communities together, much like here at home, and especially when they're going through a time of war.  So often, the needs and voices of these women are ignored, but thankfully we have organizations like Women for Women International working to change that fact.
Women for Women work to match sponsors with local women in Kosovo, the Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan and more.  Ladies, there are atrocities being committed that we usually prefer to not think about--but they're still going on against our fellow mama's across the world.  In 2005, Women for Women empowered over 30,000 women survivors of war, on the margins of hope, to move closer to economic self-sufficiency.

Imagine how many since then, and how many more tomorrow, if we all took a minute of our time, and a penny from our wallet, to help out.  Click here to find out more about what they do, and here to find out how you can help.

Portamee

January 06, 2008

Portamee Close to Mee

I'll admit it, I am an amateur Babywearer. Until last summer, I never even knew that carriers and slings outside of a Baby Bjorn existed, but once my fellow Mama Speaks friends showed me the ropes, I was hooked! I of course have formed opinions on my favorites, and the Portamee [$180] is definitely one of the best I have tried so far.

At first glance, the Portamee isn't as visually appealing as one might like, but it makes up for looks in comfort and ease of use. I tend to like carriers with more color and personality, but the basic black is easy to coordinate with if that’s your style. I am not a particular fan of the "rear fanny pack", but I can see why it's there.  The lower back support is phenomenal, and in order to utilize the area, the "daddy pack" was added. With all of the pockets and compartments, there is certainly no need for a bulky diaper bag (if one at all).  There are places to store diapers, wipes, pacifiers, and even a removable bottle holder, all within arm's reach.

The mama’s behind Portamee aren’t about to leave you (and your baby) out in the rain. They offer an optional hooded cape [$40] to keep baby’s head dry in case you get stuck in an unexpected storm. And since the it's able to be used with infants as young as 8 weeks old, the  infant headrest [$40] is also an optional accessory to make the carrier more practical.

The comfort of the Portamee is what ultimately sold me, my back feels great, there's plenty of room for all of my stuff, and most importantly- baby seems to like it. and that’s all that really matters.

Mama Speaks readers can get $20 off their Portamee carrier puchase through 01.30.08 with code ttw20

Go, Goose, Go!

January 05, 2008

Gogoosego Howdy, Partner!

My son just turned two and I am loving learning the extremes of toddler mobility. He is either running full speed ahead or stepping very. very. slowly.

The toddler mosey we like to call it in these parts and in silliness it wasn't long before he was branded our little cow poke. This of course meant that he needed a cowboy outfit tonto pronto. (am I the only one who does this? I called him moose when he was a baby which led to a slew of moose themed outfits, bug when he was a bit bigger=insect cape, a couple months ago- my little dinosaur, thank you Halloween costumes... it is an amazingly dorky addiction I tell you.)

Surprisingly, the folks at Go, Goose, Go! have come up with quality cowboy attire that is seriously cool.  Fringed cow print or "pony skin" pants for the boys and skirts for your favorite cowgirl will ensure your tot is moseying along in style. Pair the pants with a bucking bronco tee for little outlaws or deputy sheriff's top for your little law upholding ladies and gents, and a cowboy hat and kerchief round out the cowpoke perfection.

Go, Goose, Go! also offers a slew of other comfy cute graphic tees and organic onesies, but I have a feeling we'll be sticking with our western gear for quite awhile.

Win it!
One Mama Speaks reader will win a Go, Goose, Go! tee or onesie of their choice! Send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Goose as your subject. Please include your pick and size. Ends January 07.

Smart Mom Jewelry

Smartmom Bada-Bling

With a 10 month old son who I swear has been teething since birth, I have been on the lookout for anything (and I mean anything) that would satisfy his innate need to chomp. On the market these days are tons of “teething toys” that range from water filled plastic toys to textured rings, and of course nothing that seemed to be baby-approved in my house. On the flip-side, he finds many, many things that are not particularly made to be used as a baby chew toy to stick in his mouth, that in turn makes mama a little paranoid. You know- cat toys, plastic hangers, shoes- yum! It wasn’t until I found Teething Bling, that I was able to drop the paranoia and get back to being a happy mom.

The Teething Bling pendant [$19], by Smart Mom Jewelry may look like just another stylish little necklace but after you (and baby) get one feel (and taste, on the baby’s end of course) you'll realize it's much more. It is actually made out of the same material most teething rings are made out of, but is 100% LEAD-FREE! Not to mention, non-toxic, latex-free and phthalate free and is equipped with a breakaway clasp, for that strong little one who’s giving it a tug. The objective is simple, Mama wears the Bling and it gives baby something to play with or chew on while in her loving arms. And with the it being so attractive to the baby, their attraction to it is priceless.

When my son first got his hands on the matching Teething Bangle [$13] it went straight to the mouth. After a little while of chewing on it, he removed it from his mouth (covered with drool), and let out the cutest little “MMmmmm”. Translation: “Baby’s stamp of approval”.

Win it!
We have a Teething Bling pendant for one mama who's baby needs to chew! To enter send an email to giveaways@mamaspeaks.com by midnight January 04 with Bling as your subject.

Adrift Mobiles

Adrift Minimum Form, Maximum Beauty

We at Mama Speaks sift through a whole lot of bright colored scariness to find the best form for your function.  When I recently got the chance to test-drive the breathtakingly beautiful Adrift Camber mobile [$168], I knew you all would love it.  As most mamas know, baby mobile's have not historically been an item of style in our little one's nursery.  More of an eye sore, mobiles tend to be ugly and loud.  Sure, they keep baby occupied, but at what cost?

Any style maven knows that sacrificing a happy room for a happy baby is well worth it, but what if you didn't have t
