Rock-n-Tot

Rockntot
Partyin’ Like It’s Your Birthday (without the birthday)

My husband and I recently hit up one of the coolest DC nightclubs.  It was like old times, we couldn’t resist the rump-shakin’ beats being spun by the DJ, we got down on the floor, and when our not-like-they-used-to-be bodies couldn’t handle anymore, we chilled out with a cool beverage and bar food.  Only once did we need to leave the dance floor to change a diaper.  That’s right, we brought our toddler, we always said you’re never too young to hit the club scene, right?  Apparently we’re not the only ones who think so as we were joined with at least 100 other beaming tykes and their parents at the Rock-n-Tot event in Washington, DC.

The brain child of mothers Liz Weirshousky and Naomi Hattaway, Rock-n-Tot [$15 per person, non-walkers free] takes over 4 levels of the hottest clubs bringing life to an otherwise ordinary Saturday afternoon.  The events run from 2pm-5pm, working around our nap schedule perfectly.  We experienced one level of dancing to parent and kid friendly music.  These aren’t kid tunes that were spinning but that didn’t stop the under 4 foot set from getting down. (They just didn’t get the same nostalgic feeling when Billy Jean came on and we didn’t have to worry about bleeping out any four letter words.) Kids can freestyle or choose one of the props like hoola hoops or shakers to get them going.  Below us was a quiet and clean place to change diapers and a room just for crawlers that may need to seek safety from thrashing kids. Above us was an entire level of complimentary spa treatments for the entire family from facials, manicures and mini-massages for parents and airbrush tattoos and face painting for the kids.  The top level provided a place for everyone to chill with books, interactive story time and tents. Best of all, each level was stocked with complimentary juices, fruit and other easy to grab and dance snacks.  You’ll also get your chance at winning some great prizes from their growing list of sponsors.

Rock-n-Tot is quickly becoming one of the most sought after events.  We witnessed defeated parents trying to guilt their way into the sold out event so we recommend buying your tickets in advance online and not risking the limited quantities available at the door.  But Rock-n-Tot isn’t just for those Capital City residence (or those willing to drive the much worth it 1 hour+ like us). Midwesterners within the Cleveland vicinity can get their groove on as well, just check the event schedule for both locations.  And maybe if we all throw a tantrum, maybe we can convince Liz and Naomi the rest of the country needs their own Rock-n-Tot locations as well.  Because this is just too cool to keep for ourselves.

Win it!
We're giving away 2 pairs of tickets for Rock-n-N Tot April and 2 pairs of tickets for Rock-n-Tot May. To enter send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Rock Out as your subject. Please note that tickets are for the Washington DC events only.

Okkies

March 29, 2008

Okkies ‘Dokey!

They’re playful but not too cute. Practical but not cheap. And fun without the standard annoying “licensed character.” Okkies tops & bottoms are what Mama likes to buy and what kids like to wear.I hate spending too much money on hip tees or pants that I then end up not letting my guys even wear very often because I’m afraid they’ll be a kid- gasp!- and get dirty! Or wear out their pricey duds. What else are clothes good for?

Okkies’ quality and style makes sense with their mid-range prices. Tees like the Brown Frog Tee [$34] are simple but oh so gentle on the skin, 100% cotton, and are just made to be worn. Camo Cargo Pants [$48] by Okkies are ready for the all terrain of spring and summer playground fun, but you still get to dress them cute.

The softness, comfort, accurate sizing, and the fact that their products are wear & wash and wash & wear… that’s what clothes for little kids should be about, right?

Marmalade Ink

Marmaladeink Something To Write Home About

The personalized greetings by Marmalade Ink are not the usual cutesy variety that you see available online these days. No frills and fluff or generic colors here- these vibrant cards and invitations stand out above the rest and express your style with style.

For certain there is a birth announcement to fit your growing family. Your special arrival deserves the royal treatment with the Brandon Michael announcement [$57 for a set of 25] and Adoption announcements like the beautiful GraceAnne gracefully let the whole world know about your new addition. Send the classiest Holiday cards this year that will surely be on display by all your acquaintances. And next birthday, personalize a rockin’ invitation like the Jeremy James [$50 for 25].

We were most excited by the Kids Lined Stationery Pads [$32]. Oh, it is so hard it is to find lined paper! Not to mention paper this cool and personalized with your child’s photo and name. My Noah couldn’t wait to write his grandparents a letter and will also be composing a “What I Did Over Spring Break” note to his teacher this week! His eyes were so wide with excitement when he saw this electric guitar notepad of his very own. What a fabulous gift idea for any young writer.

It’s not all about the kids; Marmalade Ink has Something for Mom, too. Take time to send a creative note of your own. Express who you are and encourage the whole family to recapture the lost art of letter writing and sending through the post. There’s nothing like getting a real live letter in the mail.

Innies & Outies

March 27, 2008

Innies Not Just For Belly Buttons

Having three kids has taught me all too well how to prepare for disasters. I always make sure there's an extra outfit in the diaper bag for each kid. You never know when they are going to fall in the mud, spill something on themselves, or have a potty accident, and you can never be too prepared.

Innies & Outies has solved all those problems. I was just handed the cutest dress [$59.50], not only is it really cute, and totally girly (which I love!), it's reversible. Did you hear me? Reversible! There's no need for that extra outfit taking up space in your already stuffed diaper bag. Innies and Outies clothing is wonderful for traveling and packing lightly.

Perfect for those little accidents the kids may have when you're in a hurry. Just turn it inside out and go! It's that simple. You don't even have to look for different shoes, because both sides compliment each other. With all of their sweet solids and pretty prints you have tons of options to choose from for your little guy or girl. I am going to make my wish list right now, and I'm thinking they make awesome gifts too!

Baby Bisou

March 26, 2008

Babybisou Love At First Sight

Many babywearers can’t help but swoon over gorgeous baby carrier fabrics and designs. It’s our thing. It’s why we have more than one (or three or four) ring slings and mei tais and wraps and so on. When I first laid eyes on the beautiful modern mei tais by Baby Bisou, I wanted to marry them. They are that pretty.

Instantly I had to have the Avery [$125], and I wanted to design my whole living room around it with matching cushions on my couch. And even though I don’t really wear pink, I was trying to justify the Plum Blossom or Botanical Garden [each $125] by thinking that would remedy the absence of blush tones in my wardrobe. You do have the option to go plain-jane (although with these prints I don’t know why anyone ever would), but the Simple Black [$119] might be more likely worn by Daddies versus the Honey Sparrow [$125].

But enough about the loveliness of these carriers. Baby Bisou’s structure and style is functional and sturdy without any unneeded extras. It’s not heavy or bulky and, because I tend to be more a fan of straps and ties than buckles, I wasn’t sure what I’d think of the comfort with Baby Bisou. I found it super-easy to put on and get my child secure- recommended for babies aged 3 months to 40 lbs. It is very quick and convenient to use the buckle clasps as well as adjust the shoulder straps and waist before and after baby is on, too. The wide waist band gives an excellent support that I don’t have with my strappy non-buckled mei tai. Ladies will also appreciate the positioning of the buckles and straps, as it doesn’t seem to accentuate our, ahem, extra rolls and curves as some carriers can do!

I love a good Asian carrier for the back carry, and this one feels and looks good. Baby Bisou isn’t oversized, so I am really looking forward to carrying a smaller babe on front as well. I love the way Baby Bisou imitates the traditional mei tai in every way, but instead it just has buckles. It doesn’t look “commercial” or plastic or manufactured like I’ve seen with other soft structured carriers. This is the real deal with a bonus of delicious patterns and colors you’ll just want to wrap yourself (oh, and baby) up in!

Want it?
Baby Bisou is offering free shipping on all carriers through the end of March.

Win it!

Blue Poppy

Cbabyb Baby Blues

Often times it's hard to capture the sweet, perfect innocence of our babies, be it in photos, writing or other works of art.  Finding the right way to show off their magic can be a challenge, and I know that I look for little ways for my boys and my niece to express their own special "it" factor whenever I can.  We at Mama Speaks have scored once again, and our family has adopted the most gorgeous piece of jewelry you will ever see on a baby's tiny wrist.

At Blue Poppy, the baby bird bracelet [$64] is unmatched by any of the other baby jewelry I've seen.  Made of sterling silver, these tiny bracelets are adjustable, and have a small space for engraving whatever little details strike your fancy.  Created with a tiny bird on a branch, the symbol is the perfect understated elegance that can be handed down the generations.  Not to be left out, mamas can also get the baby bird bracelet in adult sizes, as well as strut their stuff in any of Blue Poppy's other modern and slick designs.  If you are looking for that special heirloom piece, or just the perfect "wear with everything" item, definitely make Blue Poppy your first stop.

Jack's Harvest

March 20, 2008

Jacks A Harvest for his Heart

Before I gave birth to my son, I vowed that every single thing that went into his body would be something that was good for him. Now, I must admit, I have sort of strayed a bit since he started eating adult food, but when it came to baby food, I stuck with my instincts and only gave him certified organic foods. It wasn't an easy task either. My local grocery store didn't carry the brand I was feeding him, so I had to do some traveling and stocking up in order to get him the best I could find. Luckily, I found an amazing brand of healthy baby food that takes the traveling part out of providing the finest foods for my little one, unless you count walking to your mailbox as traveling, that is.

Mom-preneur's, Heather and Connie seemed to be thinking the same thing I was when they came up with Jack's Harvest, a certified organic line of delivered-to-your-door fresh baby foods. When I say healthy, I mean really healthy. The products contain all the yummy stuff (100% certified organic fresh fruits and vegetables), none of the yucky stuff (no preservatives, no added salt or sugar, no chemicals, no artificial colors or flavors), and no allergic stuff (no gluten, eggs, wheat, dairy, or nuts). They are personally delivered to your door, packaged in dry ice to keep them fresh and frozen until you need them. And for added cuteness, they come in perfectly portioned heart shaped frozen pieces in clear, see-through bags that store wonderfully in the freezer (and stay fresh in there for 3 months!).

With Jack's Harvest, you won't find the basic apples, bananas and peas for flavors and names. For example, you'll uncover flavors like cauli-baba potatoes, pearsnip, and tango with mango. I don't know about you, but I have never come across a baby food that contains cauliflowers! And even though my little guy wasn't a fan at first, I was happy to know that I could find a food for him that would expand his personal palate, even at such a young age.

Now that my little guy is moving on to adult foods, and growing up more and more every day, feeding him foods that are good for him is a bit more of a challenge. But it was nice to know that in his first year of life, there was a company looking out for his best interests, just as much as I was.

Win it!
We have a $25 gift certificate to Jack's Harvest for one hungry babe! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Jack as your subject and let us know which amazing flavor you might just sneak a couple bites of. Giveaway ends March 24, 2008.

Kinder Cashmere

March 19, 2008

Girlinsandsm Like Buttah

In my continuing quest to find all things worthy of my little niece-ling princess, receiving a Kinder Cashmere sweater dress was all too apropos.  The 100% cashmere fabric is so yummy that I felt the urge to spread it on a bagel and lick it up.  The softness of the colors compliment the serene fabric so well that I found myself wanting to clothe every man, woman and child in this cashmere--just because I think it could bring world peace to one and all.  It's that soft.

Kinder Cashmere is the brain-child of Danielle Holmes, who's designs are inspired by her various travels along with the family's farm in Maine.  The line includes not only baby layette items, but blankets and pillows as well.  While the items might seem a little pricey (ranging from $30-$320), think of this as an investment.  These gorgeously understated items are definite heirlooms in the making, and are classic enough to stand the test of time.  Go ahead and indulge in a little luxury for the little one. Your descendants will thank you.

Inky Dink

March 17, 2008

Inkydink Not Dinky on Style

A few years ago I actually had interests of my own that didn’t include the dinosaur du jour.  I often forget but there was a lot to me pre-child, and anyone who knew me then would know Kung Fu and pop art were at the top of my priorities.  Once upon a time I even ventured an all-day road trip just to step inside the Andy Warhol museum.  Nothing I would dare do today with a car-phobic toddler in the back seat.  And once upon a time I wasn’t afraid to walk down a dark alley at 2 a.m. alone with my kung fu skills hidden beneath my tight jeans and heels.  As a work at home mom now, training was the first thing to go (along with the tight jeans and heels – and being out at 2 a.m. now that I think about it).

So when I caught glimpse of celebutot favorite label, Inky Dink, two of their designs really brought me back to the more selfish years.  Specifically, the layered-looking Pixel Kung Fu [$38] and the pop art short sleeve Burger Tee [$27]. But you don’t have to be my clone to share an appreciation for Inky Dink.  You do however, need to share an interest in cool graphics and half-pint sizing.  It doesn’t matter if your going for baby, girl or boy, regardless you’ll be getting a super soft cotton and tagless tee with edgy designs that will appeal to mom and dad but more importantly to the kids.  We’re not talking about dressing babies in shirts featuring our favorite punk rock bands that died out long before our kids were a glimmer (uh, sorry about that babe.)  What kid wouldn’t love a triple stack burger?  Hey it could be a veggie burger too you know.

It’s understandable why Inky Dink is found dressing most of the Hollywood tykes, they have a rock vibe that’s easy for the whole family to roll with.

Music in our Schools Month

Musicschools the cause: Music in our Schools Month

the problem: More and more lately we are seeing programs, such as music and the arts, being cut from the educational curriculum in today’s schools.  In an effort to help save such programs, organizations are attempting to raise awareness in order to possibly save such programs from being removed from schools of all grade levels across the nation.

the purpose: The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. Music allows us to celebrate and preserve our cultural heritages, and also to explore the realms of expression, imagination, and creation resulting in new knowledge. Therefore, every individual should be guaranteed the opportunity to learn music and to share in musical experiences.

give: Your gift will help support The National Association for Music Education’s mission of encouraging the study and making of music by all.

Peanut Shell

Peanut_shell In A Nutshell

I admit that I normally have not been a big fan of pouch slings- some can be very hard to find the right size and fit, and it often just doesn’t seem right with the baby all squished up in there! But, I have come to see the light in recent months. The Peanut Shell is a comfortable, convenient, and super easy to use pouch sling. When your baby carrier fits properly and is worn correctly, it’s just bliss!

The lightweight cotton of the Peanut Shell has just the right amount of stretch so that the pouch is neither too loose (as I’ve experienced with other brands) or too tight (ditto). A slimmer cut on the shoulder eliminates extra bulk, and light padding on the rails is gentle on baby’s legs. Having no straps or buckles to mess with is a wonderful plus, and it folds up so tiny, neatly, and nicely right in your purse or diaper bag when you’re on the go, as we always are. I still prefer my Peanut Shell pouch over all other carriers for nursing, especially in public.

Added features like a pocket and toy loop are nice, but not something I actually use. I’m just crazy about the patterns, feel, and overall ease of wearing this carrier! BoHo Chic [$49] is a popular cotton print, and for those that find patterns a bit too busy or feminine, opt for something like the solid Temptation in chocolate [$49]. I like to have my choices, so the reversible Red Yoko [$65] is more for me!

And I never knew Peanut Shell had wraps! Like, really fancy ones with appliqués such as the Girly Skull [$99] on black! If that’s a little too much bling bling, then choose one in just Solid Black [$69]. Nursing covers are another newer addition to the Peanut Shell line, available in many of the same prints as the slings. Make breastfeeding discreetly even more enjoyable with baby under the Lotus Nursing Cover [$29] or the yummy Mojito [$29].

I had also been under the impression that pouch slings were best for the smaller babes, but found it to be one of my favorite ways to wear my two-year-old! Peanut Shell is recommended for infants and toddlers up to 36 lbs. Choose the right size for you by using the helpful sizing guide. I believe the Peanut Shell is one pouch that is generous with giving you a great fit and way to wear your baby with convenience and confidence!

Win it!
We're giving away a Peanut Shell pouch (size XS) for one (erm, tiny?!) reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Peanut as your subject and let us know which print is your fav. Giveaway ends midnight March 17.

Lil' Bowl Blu + Le Scrub

March 14, 2008

Method Bowled Over

Of all the household chores, cleaning toilets is the worst. It's not that it's the hardest necessarily, just a squirt of cleaner and swipe of the scrubber and you done, it's more that I can't stop myself from imagining what goes in. While completely natural, it's just a little gross when your other end is peering in. What's even worse is all the junk that comes in a conventional cleaner. Prepared to do the dirty work they come chock full of phosphates and sulfuric acid, which will definitely do the duty but takes it's toll on our environment.

And just as we were all thinking, "Why don't the folks at Method come out with a toilet bowl cleaner already?!". They do. The latest to hit the lineup of fantabulous products from Method is Lil' Bowl Blu, a tiny little toilet cleaner that knows how to get the job done. Made with lactic acid (vegan sourced) and xanthum gum it can tame toilets and break up tough stains while taking it easy on our ecosystem.

Even better Lil' Bowl Blu has the scent of Eucalyptus Mint and as strange as it sounds there is suddenly a little bit of spa-ness to scrubbing the john. I'll be the first to admit that for the first time ever, I was excited to be on potty duty. You can find my new favorite helper on store shelves now and can purchase through Method's website in April. And if you're looking for something new to tackle the tub you might want to take Le Scrub for a spin.

Win it!
We're giving away a bottle of Lil' Bowl Blu and Le Scrub! To enter, send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight March 14, with Bowled Over as your subject. And while you're at it, head on over to Method and enlighten somebody.

Clementine Boutique

March 13, 2008

Clementine Oh My Little Darlings

I admit it; my no sweets rule was purely for selfish reasons. The joy I would experience sharing an ice cream cone with my boy would not outweigh the insanity that would be sure to follow as he bounced off of wall, ceiling and my last nerve. I’ve since come around and now see the wonders of an occasional treat and a concept called moderation. Now baking up goodies has become something we both look forward to although one of us hasn’t fully grasped the whole moderation thing. Instead of saying no to another high-calorie cookie, I say yes to something even better, the handmade felt Sweet Shoppe Sugar Cookies [$14] from Clementine Boutique.

The six cookies come packaged as if you’ve just plucked them fresh from your local baker’s shelf.  Each cookie is topped with sweet felt frosting and shimmery bead sprinkles that look yummy enough to eat but instead lure you into hours (that’s minutes in toddler attention span timing) of imaginary play.  Play where mom and child can whip up dessert with no burnt bottoms and eat dozens of cookies without the sugar hangover.  And if unexpected guests like Mama Teddy and Plush Man Jack arrive, you can easily serve up scrumptious and equally adorable cupcakes before their tea gets cold.

Clementine has made the joy of baking a regular occasion in our house.  Now if only they could throw in a battered-covered spoon that I can hide in the closet and lick clean, we’ll be all set.

Win it!
We have a pack of Sweet Shoppe Sugar Cookies for one reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeak.com with Clementine as your subject and let us know what other sweet felt treat you'll find at Clementine. Giveaway ends midnight March 13.

Paint By Letter's - NO VOC

March 12, 2008

Paint As our country starts to get a clue and green things up a bit you may have heard the term VOC pop up a time or two. But what exactly is a VOC and what the heck does it mean for you? To give you the short of things VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) are nasty little chemicals lurking all over your house. We'll let you dive in a little deeper to the science speak on your own if you'd like, but you should know that they are released by things like carpet and paint contributing to the fact that our air indoors is generally 2 to 5 times more polluted than that outside.

Once the chemicals are in the air, we breath them in and that's where things get scary. In addition to causing annoying issues such as eye, nose and throat irritation, VOC's can also cause memory loss and are known to cause cancer in humans and animals alike. Not quite the environment we'd like to to house our healthy family.

So, what can you do to make a difference within your four walls? We can all easily start with the paint we slap on them. Many mainstream paint suppliers are coming out with "green", low or no VOC paints these days (just be sure to read the fine print) but since we like to stick to the smaller guys, we've found some amazing options for adding a little color to your space without bringing home the funk.

BioshieldBioshield Kinder Paints [$40 gallon] - Created with baby in mind this line of premixed, ready to use, chalk based paint is perfect for any nursery or play space. With a cake batter texture it takes some time to get the application down, but once you get in your groove you'll be rolling away. All ten muted colors are available in a flat sheen, but don't worry, we've had no problem wiping sticky fingers prints and a pint-sized Picasso remnant away.

Safepaint Milk Paint's SafePaint [$46 gallon] - Reminiscent of the way paint used to be. This powder based paint is as green as it gets- non-toxic with zero VOC's. A bit of elbow grease is required as you'll have to mix up powder with water at high speeds, but just think of the packaging and extra transport saved by leaving the water before it reaches you.

Safecoat Safecoat Zero VOC [$36 gallon] - Available in flat, eggshell and satin finishes this gorgeous green paint in the closest to conventional. Smooth application, very low odor on application and no odor at all upon drying. Plus it's LEED Qualified so you know you're getting a product that stands up to it's claims.

Polliwalks

Polliwalks See You Later Alligator

I'm a bit of a shoe snob. And not in the way you might think. I'm more in the "Jimmy who?" camp but when it comes to sneakers and casual footwear I know my stuff. For the past two years my little guy has been pretty good about letting me tuck his toes into whatever I wish, and thankfully shares my taste in most things. Nevertheless, as we start to give him more options in the clothing department I'm starting to realize he would add a little more of the trucks, soccer balls and animals that are scarce in Mama's choosing. So, in addition to the skate shoes and the obligatory pair of Chucks you will now see my little guy sporting his newly beloved Polliwalks.

And what is so special about these shoes you might ask? For starters they look like "Gators Mom!" (or ducks, or frogs) and are oh, so comfy. Straight out of the box my 2 year old slipped them on with no mention of needing help (does it even matter what they look like when that happens?!) and it's taken some serious leverage to get him to take them off for anything. This week in my house you will have seen Polliwalks in the bath, on top of the breakfast table and snuggling in my toddlers arms, and on those feet of course.

I'm itching for the weather to break for many reasons, but I've just added the joy of seeing Polliwalks foot printing bottoms in action to my list. In sand, mud, water and dirt (or my oversized stamp pad, not that we tried it or anything) they will leave behind tracks that might just send the gator prey scurrying to higher ground. Oh and if your still on the fence, we should add that Polliwalks are Vegan and take pride in their no waste manufacturing and eco-friendly packaging.

Win it!
We have a pair of Polliwalks for one reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Polliwalks as your subject and let us know which pair you'd like. Giveaway ends March 12.

Nest Baby Slings

Fornmnnest_2
They Have Important Stuff To Carry, Too!

Imitation is the finest form of flattery, right? Of course your son or daughter will learn by watching you early on that the things they love want to be held close, too. Most often that could be a baby doll or a “lovey” (in our case, Mr. Bear). And truth be told, sometimes that includes Legos, trucks, or even the occasional piece of food.

Ashlee Allen, owner, mastermind and creator of things at Nest Baby Sling has truly outdone herself this time! Debuting a whole new spring collection [$65-$85] for Mamas that is both breathtaking and fashionably fierce, she also added the Hatchlings [$25-$30] line for the little Mamas & Papas in training. Each Hatchling sling is made with the same fine impressive detail and care as the adult slings, coming in over 20 available styles! Make them walk the plank in the Arr, matey! Pirate [$25] or match Mommy in Chocolat [$25] or Daddy in Desert [$25].

I can’t only point out the new Hatchlings without gushing a bit over the gorgeous fresh spring set of slings for you. From the delicate Ash and Sparrow [$75 each] to the abstract Heart Nouveau [$85], you can clearly see Nest slings are a work of art, something you would see walking the high-fashion runways, if there were such a thing for baby wearers! Believe with Hope [$75], also available in Hatchling Hope [$25] created with breast cancer awareness in mind. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

All Nest slings are designed with black, silver, or colored aluminum rings in patterns and contrasting shades you would expect to see priced much higher, allowing you to carry baby in luxury without the cost. And the ultimate goal is to keep you wearing that baby close- because we all know that’s what’s best- so while you’re at it, do what’s most excellent… in style.

Win it!
We're giving away a Hatchling sling to two winners! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with nest as you subject and let us know which sling from the new collections is your favorite. Giveaway ends March 11.

Kensington Baby

Kbaby Baby Bling

Being a mom of all boys has left me with little in the way of girls and their things.  Now that I finally have a tiny little diva-niece, I need to find things for her that stand up to her oh-so-opinionated personality.  No simple little hats will do for her royal curls, so I've been on the hunt for something to keep her melon warm and stylin'.

Enter Kensington Baby.  Their posh line of hats for boys and girls has the most adorable styles, that even this no-frills mama found herself going gaga for the flowers and ribbons.  Not to be forgotten in the diaper bag or in the bottom of the closet, every little queen bee can be seen in a hat embellished with their very first bling--Swarovski crystals and all.    Not only are these hats one of a kind, but they can last long enough (up to 18 months) for the price to be well worth it [$20-22].

Whether you're hoping to give your little angel that stand-out-in-a-crowd-vibe, or just looking for some sparkle, Kensington Baby has plenty of choices to meet the need.

Win it!

We're giving away one Kensington Baby hat of the winner's choice! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Kensington as your subject, please include your choice and mailing address. Giveaway ends midnight March 10, 2008.

blueHouse

Bluehouse Mi Casa, Blue Casa

Call me a lucky mama, but Baltimore has some really great shops sprinkled throughout this fine city.  One of my favorites, residing just outside of Fell’s Point, is Bluehouse, which is not just a store, it’s a lifestyle. And not just any lifestyle, but a sustainable lifestyle we should all strive to obtain.  That aside, it’s a darn fun place to shop.

Bluehouse is another full service destination shop, stocking everything organic, recycled, sustainable or fairly traded for you, your home and your babies whether human or animal.  And with their full café menu and free wi-fi, it has quickly become one of my favorite escapes.   The selection at Bluehouse is vast but not overwhelming.  They have everything from major pieces of furniture to recycled pet beds and everything in between.  One of my son’s favorite gifts from Santa this year was discovered in this enormous safe shopping haven, the Earth Wagon by Radio Flyer.  For you newly child, this is a great place to start your baby off on the right foot with their selection of natural body care and organic attire and accessories from designers like Salvor Fauna.

There really is too much to list here but if you are out for eco-friendly needs or just a good time, Bluehouse can meet both desires.  Like their selection of Earth, and people, friendly goodies, Bluehouse itself practices what they preach from their fresh and natural café ingredients to their low-VOC paint and recycled or sustainable materials used in their own store renovation. They may be Bluehouse but they are making my life more green.  Being within driving distance of such a fine establishment does make me lucky but don’t be jealous, many of their products can be purchased directly from their website. So we can all enjoy the pleasure of shopping Bluehouse (even on those days I can’t convince myself to shed my pajamas.)

Rich Frog Pull Toys

RichfrogYou're on a roll, Dino.

Pull toys are somewhat a rite of passage for the newly walking aren't they? For whatever reason, seeing a tiny tot still a bit wobbly dragging along a string of animals is insanely cute (and yes, as I write that I am wondering just who dreamed up this whole realm of play). But lets face it, most pull toys are more of a flop. The wheels don't roll, the animals topple over, the action of pulling them creates a sound akin to something trying to escape from the bowels of... ok, you get the picture. They're just not fun. Requiring more "heeeeelp, Mommeeeee"'s than actual show time.

I'm happy to report we've discovered one that is more fun than fight! Rich Frog has a whole collection of pull toy families [$27] that are happy to roll right along with your little one. We're partial to all things prehistoric in my house, so the dino family was an obvious shoe in. T-Rex leads the pack and Triceratops and Stegosaurus trial right along, happily remaining upright. The wooden wheels roll smoothly on just about any surface, the first we've found to make the transition from hardwood to carpet without getting stuck in the process. And the soft stuffed animals add to the cuteness and have been a saving grace since my son has a gift for falling right on top of them.

We're approaching the upper limits of pull toy play- meaning not that isn't still fun, but that the walking while pulling has turned to running and jumping, and this dino family is becoming more weapon like foe than soft and snuggly friend - boys.  But this is one of those toys I'm happy to pack away to enjoy again next time or pass on down through the generations.

Fleurville Re-Run

March 06, 2008

Rerun A Welcome Diapering Downgrade

I am heavily drawn to minimalism in both design and lifestyle.  Unfortunately, my heavier ingrained pack-rat nature strong-arms this desire into submission.  My house is cluttered with things I haven’t unpacked in years but know there is still a small chance, like 1 in a billion, that I may need again that Goodwill polyester shirt with the sleeves cut off that I haven’t fit into since 10th grade.  Even my current diaper bag weighs in around 12 pounds.  So putting the small scale Re-Run™ MicroPod diaper bag from Fleurville [$28] to the test was going to be putting me to the challenge.

The Re-Run Micropod is about the essentials and not carrying around a spare house like I’ve been doing.  After making the transfer to the compact approximate 11”x 8” bag, I realized this was going to be easier than I thought.  Roomy enough for a couple disposable diapers, the included wipe case and changing cloth (not a luxury pad but a clean and protective surface for a quick change) this small package has a few hidden surprises and benefits.  I love the zip-out sippy cup mesh pocket which fit our aluminum water bottle perfectly and tucks out of the way when not in use.  The shoulder strap is adjustable enough to hang around our stroller handle or remain clutch-close when carried on one shoulder.  My favorite feature is the front fleece-lined pocket which keeps cell phones and other expensive gadgets scratch-free.  The folks of Fleurville even thought to add an ear-bud pass thru from the pocket to keep your MP3 player of choice safe and your hands free while rocking out. This makes air guitar that much easier.

Best of all, all Re-Run Fleurville bags are constructed with their proprietary PVC-free, Teflon-Free fabrics made from recycled plastic.  Hey, I just saved 3 plastic bottles from the landfill and I am saving my neck from a permanent kink!  Go with the larger messenger bag and you save even more.  If there is one thing the MicroPod showed me it was that 95% of our outings no longer required a heavy arsenal of the parenting products that I continued to carry.  Just the basics will get us through most trips and although I’m not able to fit our usual smörgåsbord of snacks, there is enough room for a banana and a supply of nuts.  Also worth mentioning, as a recovering cloth-diaper user (long story) I can tell you that this might be a bit too small from some of the heavier absorbers but can probably store a pre-fold and light cover.

I now have an excuse to step away from all the fliers and brochures I formerly felt compelled to lug home only to never to look at again.  The Fleurville MicroPod is keeping this pack rat in check while still keeping me prepared.

Appaman

March 05, 2008

Racecars_appaman Monkey Business

I used to wonder if my son would ever choose a forever friend out of the huge mass of stuffed creatures residing in our Animal Bag. Little by little, he's started poking around and will choose an animal to tote with him for a bit. For 48 hours the "chosen one", be it a T-Rex or Teddy Bear, must not leave his sight. They will brave potty runs, afternoon naps and the dreaded toothbrushing and seem to give my little guy some super human powers, if only for a little while. And then he moves on. Maybe I'm sentimental but I'm still hoping he'll settle on just one. I think there's something to be said about the childhood adventures of a boy and his ape and I know I'm not alone.

Enter Appaman, a clothing company inspired by the adventures of designer Harald Husum and his childhood friend, Appaman (a corduroy ape). This line, dominated by high quality, tees, dresses and onesies, brings high style with a touch of whimsy to the realm of tot fashion. Iconic American images are translated into wearable art that portray the things our wee ones love (bring on the bulldogs, bikes and bubbles!) in a way that is still appealing to Mama's sensibilities.

Appaman is all about the kiddie street cred, and we think the streets just got little bit cuter.

Win it!
Two lucky readers will each win an Appaman tee (size 2)! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com, with Ape Man as your subject. Also, let us know if you'd like a boy or girls tee. Giveaway ends March 05, 2008.

My Baby Nest

March 04, 2008

Mybabynest Wrap Them Up!

Even I, a well-seasoned babywearer, am still a bit intimidated by wrap carriers. There is just so much fabric and, well, so much wrapping! My Baby Nest [$60] gives you the look and feel of a wrap, without the fuss and confusion.

Made of two super-soft cotton loops and a ring-closure belt, My Baby Nest is a breeze to put on and take off, and even easier to put baby in! Simple video and written instructions for five different positions are available here. By slipping each loop over your head and forming an “X” across your body, you can quickly place baby in one of the many positions, then fasten the light-weight belt around the center for extra security and support.

My Baby Nest was especially designed for nursing newborns with ease and comfort. I can’t stress enough the convenience and importance of being able to breastfeed and wear your baby at the same time! You’ll have plenty of fabric to maintain your modesty as well as support baby’s precious head.

If you’ve found yourself unsure of the learning curve of most wrap carriers, My Baby Nest has got you covered. Available in three sizes and several colors, this carrier is perfect for Mom or Dad, and babies newborn up to 35 lbs.

Cause of the Week - The Smile Train

March 03, 2008

Smiletrain

Smile01 the cause: The Smile Train

the problem:  Cleft lip and palate's are a major problem in developing countries. There are millions of children suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly and aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. They face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.

the purpose: The Smile Train is focused on solving this single problem which can be fixed with a surgery costing only $250 and taking as little 45 minutes. Their mission is to provide free cleft surgery for millions of poor children in developing countries and to provide free cleft-related training for doctors and medical professionals. And since March 2000 they have provided free cleft surgery for 290,543 children in 71 of the world's poorest countries. That is surely something to smile about!

give: 100% of donations made to The Smile Train are used for programs and they have the lowest cost- per-surgery, lowest overhead, and highest productivity of any cleft charity in America, meaning your dollars make a big difference.

Kea & Joby

Keaandjoby Soft & Sleepy

Everyone wants that perfect pair of jeans, their favorite t-shirt they have in every color, and the trusty pair of flip flops they spend every summer in.  It's the comfort and easy style we all long for, especially in these snow-boot-parka laden days.  Kea & Joby was created for just this purpose, and they've developed such a slick and relaxing kid's clothing line that I'm wishing their pieces came in grown-up sizes as well.

From the contrasting cuffs and stitching to the fabric made of spandex/rayon, Kea & Joby has thought of everything.  The colors are soothing but not boring and the various items are killing in the laid-back-funk department.  Their new spring/summer line includes more of the same awesomeness, but my favorite as of right now is still the contrast hoodie [$15]with cargo pant [$15] (winter collection).  These clothes are easily soft enough to wiggle around the house on hands and knees, and I'm convinced my baby actually napped longer in these clothes--they're that soft.  They're having a sale on the winter items in preparation for the new line, so hurry over and grab the good while you can.

Win it!
One reader will win a $100 gift certificate to Kea and Joby! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight March 30, 2008 with K&J as your subject.

The Healthy Kitchen

March 01, 2008

Weil Weil-y Good Cooking

Most of the entire Mama Speaks team is known for their culinary skills. Almost each one of us can really get around even the most unequipped kitchen. I’m the exception to the rule, either I’m found spinning in circles scratching my head or it smells like we just survived a 3-alarm fire. So surely it was a mistake that I was the chosen one to review the Weil by Spring: The Healthy KitchenTM Cookware Collection [$70-$800].

So exactly how would I handle a review on such a product designed by none other than Dr. Andrew Weil, health guru extraordinaire, himself? Sure I can see that the double riveted, stay cool handle is more than secure and the pan itself is durable enough to handle plenty of whacks to the head. I can also tell you how the stainless steel outers forming a barrier between my food and the quick heating aluminum core puts my mind at ease. And even I can point out how the ability to pop it right into the dishwasher, unlike my current cookware, is a must have benefit for any busy parent.

But how does it cook? Am I the right person for the job? After all, there is not a non-stick layer in sight. But after all the connections with Teflon and carcinogens, I was ready to give this heavy-duty stainless steel a try. Besides, I am usually found layering on the olive oil or butter to my current cookware either for flavor or because the non-stick isn’t so non-stick, so I am still using a little oil but sans cancer.

I was ready, I gave our 8” fry pan [$80] a try. Various egg dishes are a part of our daily breakfast menu (I found the dose of protein upon waking does wonders for toddler moods) so the pan fit our 3 egg scramble perfectly. With just a touch of butter, something strange happened: the eggs were fluffy, not at all resembling the rubberized version we normally get. Must be beginners luck, but I tried again and again and no matter what was tossed into the pan, it came out evenly cooked and something I wouldn’t actually mind sharing with an outsider unaccustomed to our usual overdone meals.

Who knows, maybe with the right cookware like the Weil by Spring Collection, I may actually be a decent chef after all!  And since there is an entire line of cookware and appliances to choose from, we just may find out.  And suddenly my husband bursts into song and dance.
