Since my wee one has been old enough to squish (and not eat) everything in sight I have been making him dough to play with with. It's not too difficult; a few pantry staples plus a little bit of time and some home made dough is ripe for the playing. But it's just not the same. Colors lack luster, it smells sort of strange, dries easily, is often just a tad too sticky. It's just not ideal. So why am I not just buying that commercial stuff that is everywhere? The stuff that we grew up with? Bottom line is, I just don't trust it.
The recipe of that name brand dough is proprietary so they won't release the ingredients; if you ask me my little one's health is more important than someone creating a knock off. And yes, it is certified non-toxic but that just isn't enough for me, we all know how many non-toxic products are found to be otherwise, and how often. Thankfully, we have an alternative for you that is even better than that junk AND puts my home made stuff to shame.
Enter Mary's Softdough from Terrapin Toys. This soft, non crumbly modeling dough has been a hit for kids (and grown ups) of all ages around here and if stored in it's container it will last up to a year. Softdough comes in some amazing, vibrant colors and even scented, glow in the dark, and glitter varieties. Our favorite by far is the Rainbow Play Set [$19]. The play set includes 4 colors of dough along with a hardwood rolling pin and dough cutters in some super cool shapes. Enough fun, to keep your house busy for days on end.
The kids will love the dough and us mamas love that this product is safe and from a company that cares enough to believe in transparency. Softdough is made in the US (Oregon to be exact) from ingredients that can be found in your kitchen (you could seriously eat this stuff) and best yet we didn't have to go through an inquisition to find out what's inside. Ingredients are simply stated on each container and the website.
So whether they're rolling it, molding animals, cutting shapes, or taking little nibbles here and there (ok, so, that's NOT rebcommended) you can sit ack and let those little imaginations fly.
Win it!
We're giving away a Rainbow Play Set! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com, with Dough as your subject. Giveaway ends Midnight, May 22, 2008.
