He lassoed my heart
It’s so hard to find the right balance when decorating a
baby’s nursery or your child’s room. There’s the uber-modern movement so very
popular right now, but I sometimes wonder if the kids really enjoy the
mod-blocks patterns with zig-zags and dots nearly as much as their amazingly
hip parents. On the other hand, few of us really like the primary-colored
pictures of animals and boats so prevalent in baby and children’s stores.
So when I saw the artwork of Paul Chung [$10-18] I
sort of fell in love . . . with the art, that is; I haven’t actually met Mr.
Chung. Here is a collection of prints that seems to combine the best of both
worlds. It is nostalgic and classic in subject, yet modern and unique in
execution, often blending hand-drawn illustration with digital details. And
there are several styles of work to choose from depending on your and your
child’s tastes and interests. The Alphabet
series would be beautiful for a nursery, and there are also several Number
collections from which to choose. My favorites, though, are the pieces in
which he has showcased children, like his depiction of the free-spirited boy in
“Swing Time.”
All of Paul Chung’s pieces are beautifully printed on
heavyweight, quality paper. When my “Little Cowboy”
arrived I was thrilled to see that it was even better in actuality than its
picture online. I look forward to framing and displaying it in my son’s room
for years to come.
