Colette Kids

Detail_hopper Universally Adorable

Mamas, I am so sick of blue. Sick. Of. It. Two boys and three years into my parenthood and if I see one more blue T-shirt with a train/car/digger design in our dresser, I may just start a bonfire. I’m not sure, but I’m willing to wager that some of you with girls may have similar feelings about pink flowers. And I know it’s not that we all set out to dress our kids in the most stereotypical way imaginable, it’s that we only have so much from which we can choose. Well, fret not.

Colette Kids unisex designs [$22-24] will help get you out of the blue trains/pink bunnies rut and into a place that is fresh and fun. The simple geometric animal designs of Anita Lee are adorable for both boys and girls and are available in a range of colors appropriate for anyone. The favorite toddler tees around here are Hopper the bunny in a vibrant red and Panda Ling Ling, available in cool asphalt gray. All designs are individually silk-screened by hand on 100% combed cotton, and there is a collection of organic infant onesies available in a natural beige.

So go ahead and remove the torch from the T-shirt drawer, would you? And don’t worry, they have one in blue and one in pink too.

Eleven Collection

July 14, 2008

Picture_2 Tiny Trendy Toes

I realize that I'm probably in the minority here, but if I'm being honest I must say that I'm not one of those women with a thing for shoes.  I only require four (five at the most) pairs to make my wardrobe functional.  That said, however, I must confess that when it comes to my little ones, I enjoy giving them plenty of options when it comes to footwear.  I have a really hard time saying no to a tot-sized totally hip tennis shoe or a sassy little sandal.

So, when I first laid eyes on the Eleven Collection shoes product line, admittedly my heart fluttered a bit.  Their colorful collection left me struggling to pick just one pair.  And when the Eleven trainer arrived, I may have drooled, if only a little.  Durably constructed with real leather, these little babies are as well-made as they are cute.   From the moment you take them from the box you'll be able to see and feel the difference quality design and materials can make.

With shoes for both girls and boys in sizes 9-1 you're sure to find something irresistible to slip on the pudgy little feet of the cute kid in your life.

We're giving away a pair of Eleven Collection shoes in winners choice of size and style! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Eleven as your subject. Let us know what style (from the current collection) you'd like along with your size and address. Giveaway ends 07.16.08

a b sea

July 11, 2008

Absea

Sail Away

I have found the lap of luxury in baby wear and was actually tempted to keep it all to myself. But alas, I must share so that your babe can too be clothed in the most silky, soft goodness I’ve ever felt or seen. I am absolutely smitten with a b sea  and their all natural, organic baby clothing.

The a b sea collection of Silkseas are washable silk which makes them naturally wrinkle-resistant, hypoallergenic, and weather-proof. Inspired by and resembling a day at the beach, a b sea dresses your little sailor in colors of sand, bay, buoy, and wave. The simplicity of the organic silk infant sac [$70] makes it the perfect first outfit for your newborn, and even includes a convenient opening for the car seat. The crew sweater and pants set [$78], available in sizes 3-24 months, is absolutely stunning in person- and I will be honest- it is worth every thread of its price.

All of a b sea's Silkseas have the sandcastle logo on back and a hand-designed embroidery up front, "drawn from life and tied into imagination." Each piece is as delicate as your baby, with the sweetest, most intricate stitching. I only wish there were more styles and sizes to choose from- and a week at a beach house to go with it!

Chapter One Organics

July 10, 2008

Chapterone One Can Make All The Difference

Chapter One Organics is all about the crunchy and earthiness we dig, but with unexpected mod patterns and funky styles that sets them apart from the rest. Girly sass is all over the groovy pink romper [$36]  in just the right tones and hues to be natural but also hip. The earthluxe organic red clay romper [$38] will convince you that every fresh baby deserves to lounge in only the best organic fabrics. Then, swaddle them in premium fibers of sweet softness with an organic paisley blanket [$28]. Generous sizing in these roomy pieces will make for longer lasting wear. Separates like the earthluxe olive top and bottom [$54] are available for newborns to 18-24 months.

All this goodness in a baby romper or toddler tee shirt is not the only goal of Chapter One, as they also strive for an environmentally sustainable society as well as upholding standards to create green jobs for struggling women needing a fresh start in life.  And just when you thought there couldn't be more to love, they give back in a big way by donating clothing samples and seconds to families in need. Gimos

Gimos Gimme More Gimos

Boutique styles with discount store prices will have you hooked at your first click over to Gimos Kidswear. Just making its way from Argentina and now available in the US, I think Gimos can make itself right at home. Funky tees for boys like the Rhino T-Shirt [$22] have me super excited to find something in bigger kid sizes- from size 4 on up to 12. Several styles for the dino obsessed such as the Andesaurus T-Shirt [$22] and Dino Skeleton Socks [$6] make most any boy in my life quite thrilled. Baby boys in sizes 3-24 months can also get in on the cool tee action- I personally love the sketchy Dino Tee [$15].

And of course I am now allowing myself to peruse the girlie selections, showing restraint (for now) as I want to put the African Girl Tee [$14] with the matching African Hippie Pant [$30] and Ema Dress [$30] in my shopping cart. Honestly, at those prices... I just might.

Newborn sizes and shoes will be added soon to the catalog, and I can't wait to see what they'll have to offer. I say, Gimos, welcome to my world- I think you're here to stay!

Zoe & Sprout

June 06, 2008

ZoesproutHome Grown

They may not be able to talk yet, but you know your little bambino is thinking some clever things. Zoe & Sprout gets into the minds of hip & funky babies and puts it right onto a tee shirt. You know your little sweetheart has to brag to the other kiddies at the playdate that My Mommy Is Hotter Than Your Mommy [$18], and little green activists all want to declare My Stroller Is A Hybrid [$18], too.

The American-made unique tees come sized for babies 3-24 months all the way up to toddlers’ size 6T. One of the freshest things sprouting up is the Organics collection- only the best should be worn on your wee one’s skin.

And even better- Zoe & Sprout gives 3% of its yearly profits to the largest volunteer-based community action & education organization, Keep America Beautiful, whose goal is to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community's environment. My Little Dear

May 19, 2008

Mylittledear Dear Me, I Want Them All

Give me a whole day to spend browsing on Etsy and I would be in heaven. Handmade treasures abound at every click and corner. In a time where unique and different is “in”, thus making it kinda pricey to dress your little ones in the latest “it” tees, My Little Dear is a dear find. I’ve yet to climb and shout it from the rooftops, but I’ll be glad to declare it here: I’m having a little girl! And I want to scoop up every delicately handcrafted My Little Dear onesie with their sweet birds and owls and flowers.

My Little Dear isn’t just for sweet little girls either. There are airplanes and penguins, too, perfect for a boy or girl. Each onesie is hand dyed, featuring a darling screen print design available in infant sizes up to 24 months [$9.] And yes, at just $9 each you can see why I’m all about scooping these little dears up.

HALO Innovations

May 16, 2008

Halo_inovations An Angelic Invention

All Moms & Dads have safety first on their minds with new babies, especially when they are asleep in their cribs or family bed. I am quite intrigued by the unique creations of HALO Innovations, such as their breathable layette pieces made of interesting materials designed to encourage healthier and safer sleeping. I never would have considered it before, but it just makes sense- and I am impressed!

The Technical Comfort System™ Layette made with Coolmax® Fabric is chemical free, wicks away moisture to protect precious baby skin, and helps keep baby cooler when it’s warm and warmer when it’s cool! This product line is also perfect for children with very sensitive skin. Available in short- or long-sleeved bodysuits [$13], Coveralls [$23], and 2-piece sets [$23] for babies up to size 24 months.

And folks, for once I’m saying that fashion isn’t the number one thing to consider with your baby’s clothes sometimes. HALO founder William Schmid began his sleep environment research after losing a child to SIDS. I’m still digging the look and feel of the Coolmax® Fabric. It’s like sporty clothes for baby, but with a higher purpose.

Shout Out!

May 08, 2008

Shoutout_2 Shout and Let It All Out

You know all those slogan tees that still provide endless entertainment for us parents imagining those witty words coming out of our innocent children while the kids just smile without a clue about what they are wearing? Well I don’t know about you, but these days my kid has plenty of his own wit, I no longer need to do any of the smart ass speaking for him. So just what would my wry little guy put on his own tee if he could? I don’t know; let’s give him one from the kiddie line at Shout Out! and find out.

Shout Out! kiddie tees [$38] provide the perfect outlet for children ages 4 and up by taking a soft cotton tee, that our kids would be in anyway, and turning it into their very own portable soapbox. Each pink, green or white shirt available in sizes 4 through 12 comes suited up with a circular Velcro area on the front and a strip across the back along with more than enough detachable letters, numbers and symbols to turn any thought into a fashion statement. And since we know a child’s mood changes before we can recover from the first one, each purchase comes with an easy to strap onto anything bag to carry around the spares, known as the Spazz Bag, so their shirts can change right along with them.  And since we know Mom and Dad have plenty to get off their chest too, check out their Ladies and Dudes line [$40] and have a complete conversation without actually talking.

Whether your child chooses to spell out “Leave Me Alone” or “I love Mama” like mine did (yeah, so what if he can’t spell yet and Mama was coaching him along) with Shout Out! we’ll never have to remind them to “use their words” again.

Win it!
Feeling the need to shout it out yourself?! One reader will win a tee of their own. To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with SHOUT as your subject and let us know what your own personal slogan would be.

Jazzy Toes

May 07, 2008

Jazzytoes Spirit Fingers, Jazzy Toes

It's no secret that girly clothes and accessories pretty much out number their boy counterparts by a landslide.  I've always had to work hard to find cute and cool duds for my three boys, so I love it when I find a company that works to fill that void.  Jazzy Toes was invented for this reason--to provide funky socks for little boys to crawl and giggle in style.

Jazzy Toes has 6 different styles of socks that all look like various forms of grown up shoes we all know and love.  There's cowboy boots, tennis shoes and my own favorite, the wing tips [$25]. Each one has a non-skid grip on the bottom for any little one working on the walking, and each set comes with 6 pairs of funky socks.  The box sets are packaged in a ready-to-mail gift box that not only looks cool, but reduces packaging and saves you the time and paper needed to wrap it yourself.

Buskins Shoes

May 05, 2008

Buskins Shoes for the Sole

While our little sweeties are learning to walk and learning to run, it's important that their growing feet are able to develop properly.  Hard shoes are for older kids, so moms of babies need to stick to the softer soles when choosing the perfect shoe.

Luxurious and yummy, Buskins shoes are some of the cutest styles in soft-soled-land.  They have adorable velcro straps in lieu of elastic, and are handcrafted in Australia. The red Amanda's [$28] are among my favorites, and their softness is so therapeutic that I was wishing I had my own pair (or three) in my size.  Of course, I had to eventually hand them over to my sweet niece-ling, and she is now officially the swankiest 5 month old princess on the block.

Glamorous Girl

May 01, 2008

Glamorous_girl Nothing But The Finer Things

If you are on the hunt for cute hair accessories, whether it be for your daughter, niece or your own silky mane, the options can be a little overwhelming. There are hundreds upon hundreds of little online shops selling clippies, headbands, bows and more.  The one thing most of these places have in common is that their items are relentlessly unsophisticated. Anyone wanting just a simple and cute hair accessory usually ends up settling rather than scoring.

Now, thanks to another awesome Etsy find, we have some cool, adorable and sophisticated options for dressing up our tresses.  Glamorous Girl Accessories [$3-7] has a wide selection of simple and chic ribbon clips (and more) that any little darlin would love to show off.    From mod dots to pretty peonies, every personality can find something just right at this sweet little shop.  Even the perfectly constructed flower and butterfly clips have this non-girly mama drooling and wishing for my own set.  My personal favorites, the vintage enamel hair pins, leave me wondering how I got by without these delicious bobbles before now, and thrilled to have finally found a store to meet my funky hair needs.

Robeez Weekend

April 28, 2008

Robeez_weekend Everybody's Walking For The Weekend

The weekends are for sleeping in (yeah right), breakfast in bed (still waiting) and frolicking on the beach (only with earmuffs, here).  This kind of fun needs rockin shoes, even for the littlest of feet, and we've been loving the new Robeez Weekend [$28] line of soft-soled shoes.  Barefoot is best for walkers-in-training, but when doing the training outside it's good to cover their toesies with something soft soled.

Most of us have seen or owned Robeez, I'm sure, but these new weekenders have a new look.  There's a white sole, tab at the heel and striped elastic that makes them look like those slip on basics of yesteryear (hint: rhymes with "mans").  Just like regular Robeez, the weekend style stays put on tiny heels, and the solid colors will go with pretty much every outfit.  While you slip on your "mans", let baby slip on the Robeez Weekends and head outside to test those walking skills.

Win it!
We have to pairs of Robeez Weekend shoes for our readers! (winners choice of size and color) To enter, email giveaways(at)mamaspeaks.com by midnight April 29 with Weekend as your subject.

Chesapeake Ribbons

April 23, 2008

Chesapeake_ribbons Just Cinch It

So often, cute belts for kids are overlooked by clothing designers or made but are too bulky and fussy. We've had one childs' belt (just one!) in our house for years, and it's been handed down the brother-line just because it's the only belt I could ever find that was funky and functional.  It's orange (yet worn all the time despite the lack of matching) and the ribbon/D-ring style that we all love.  I have yet to find another belt for my boys that was worth the money or the fuss--until now.

Meet Chesapeake Ribbons, the brain-child of a regular stay-at-home mom looking to fill a void in the hair ribbon and ribbon belt arenas.  Chesapeake Ribbon belts are made really well and are fun enough to be a gift for a friend or a special item for your little one in need of some cinching.  No shocker here--our personal favorite is the Black Skulls [$12-14], or as my son calls it, the "pirate belt".   Perusing the other styles, you'll find something for everyone.  The simple yet classic child, the preppy child, the sporty child, the one of a kind child (custom make your belt!) and of course the emo child.  In case you were starting to covet a belt for yourself, you can also find these adult sizes.  Go ahead and turn this little fashion accessory into a fashion statement, and I'll even look the other way while you and your child wear matching belts at the next playgroup.  At least they'll be cool.

Yoga for All

April 03, 2008

Yoga. I can't sing it's praises enough, and whether you currently practice or not, it's a great way to connect with the kids. Plus there's that added bonus of amazing exercise and caaaaaaalming. We're big believers in the power of getting out and taking a class with the little one's if you can, but there are some great options for getting into the swing of things at home, even if you've never seen a yoga mat before.

Yogamazing3 Yoga for the Kid in All of Us by Yogamazing [$15]
Instructor Chaz Rough has brings the silly with a fun filled yoga session for little ones and parents to enjoy together. Classic poses are paired with kid-friendly actions and segments reminiscent of a group of Wiggly dads break up the exercise. I will admit that there were a few eye-roll moments on my end, but my toddler was definitely intrigued. If you're looking for die-hard yoga practice, this is probably not for you, but we think it is the perfect intro for parents and kids, just getting into the yogic swing.

Ibycombo Itsy Bitsy Yoga for Toddlers and Preschoolers [$17]
Helen Garabedian does it again. Her latest book of 8 minute routines for 18 month to 5 year olds, brings the bliss of baby yoga to the older set. Packed with over 50 poses and games that you'll love just as much as the kids. IBY raises the bar on fitness and fun. We're thinking the proclaimed "Baby Yoga Expert" needs to add tots and tykes to her title.

Of course, you'll need a nice surface to practice on and Itsy Bitsy Yoga's new collection of baby safe yoga mats [$25] are the perfect place. Lightweight construction and the carrying strap make them easy to tote and the playful animal design invite you to climb on top and work it out.

Yolipoli2 Yoli Poli Yoga Tee's [$28]
We've found that kids are often inspired by the clothes they wear and the collection organic, yoga inspired tees available from Yoli Poli are the perfect encouragement off the mat. Now available in baby, girl and boy styles each comfy, fashionable tee promotes the healthy lifestyle we all want our little one's to lead.

To complete the look, they are perfectly paired with a pair of American Apparel Karate Pants [$12-$14].

Win it!
We're giving away a pack of yoga goodies valued at $85! One winner will receive a Yoga for the Kid in All of Us DVD, Itsy Bitsy Yoga Toddler/Preschooler book and mat set and Yoli Poli tee! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Yogi as your subject and let us know one product you love from each site (other than those listed here). Giveaway ends April 03, 2008.

Wee Wee Wear

April 01, 2008

Bakeme_g_t Wee’s the Word

I know that it has become fairly easy to find websites and companies out there that make funky little tee’s for our funky little ones, but I can’t tell you how excited I was to stumble upon the mom-created, Wee Wee Wear. Not only do they have t-shirts [$24] with sayings like “Backseat Driver” and “Love Ya Like Cake”, but since each one is made to order and not mass produced, you can get them in a variety of colors and styles. If you fancy a onesie or a tee (short-sleeved or long), you can find each and every style in either one. Also, Wee Wee Wear tries to give you option to veer the shirt towards a little gal or a little guy. And since the prints are generally gender neutral, you’re sure to be able to get exactly what you want. Did I mention that they are made out of 100% super fine interlock combed cotton? Oh I didn’t? Because seriously, this shirt is so soft you’ll wanna cuddle with it even if your babe’s NOT wearing it!

In addition to all the other charismatic shirts you’ll find Allergy Awareness Tee’s [$20] and Buttons [$5]. With over 12 million people in the United States suffering from food allergies (the majority of them being school-aged children), what a great idea to make it known right there for the world to see. A portion of the proceeds from this line goes to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Networks and helps support 2008's Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward a Cure.

I know our little one’s grow so fast, but why not dress them in something that is funky as they are while they are still letting us pick out their clothes!

Okkies

March 29, 2008

Okkies ‘Dokey!

They’re playful but not too cute. Practical but not cheap. And fun without the standard annoying “licensed character.” Okkies tops & bottoms are what Mama likes to buy and what kids like to wear.I hate spending too much money on hip tees or pants that I then end up not letting my guys even wear very often because I’m afraid they’ll be a kid- gasp!- and get dirty! Or wear out their pricey duds. What else are clothes good for?

Okkies’ quality and style makes sense with their mid-range prices. Tees like the Brown Frog Tee [$34] are simple but oh so gentle on the skin, 100% cotton, and are just made to be worn. Camo Cargo Pants [$48] by Okkies are ready for the all terrain of spring and summer playground fun, but you still get to dress them cute.

The softness, comfort, accurate sizing, and the fact that their products are wear & wash and wash & wear… that’s what clothes for little kids should be about, right?

Innies & Outies

March 27, 2008

Innies Not Just For Belly Buttons

Having three kids has taught me all too well how to prepare for disasters. I always make sure there's an extra outfit in the diaper bag for each kid. You never know when they are going to fall in the mud, spill something on themselves, or have a potty accident, and you can never be too prepared.

Innies & Outies has solved all those problems. I was just handed the cutest dress [$59.50], not only is it really cute, and totally girly (which I love!), it's reversible. Did you hear me? Reversible! There's no need for that extra outfit taking up space in your already stuffed diaper bag. Innies and Outies clothing is wonderful for traveling and packing lightly.

Perfect for those little accidents the kids may have when you're in a hurry. Just turn it inside out and go! It's that simple. You don't even have to look for different shoes, because both sides compliment each other. With all of their sweet solids and pretty prints you have tons of options to choose from for your little guy or girl. I am going to make my wish list right now, and I'm thinking they make awesome gifts too!

Blue Poppy

March 24, 2008

Cbabyb Baby Blues

Often times it's hard to capture the sweet, perfect innocence of our babies, be it in photos, writing or other works of art.  Finding the right way to show off their magic can be a challenge, and I know that I look for little ways for my boys and my niece to express their own special "it" factor whenever I can.  We at Mama Speaks have scored once again, and our family has adopted the most gorgeous piece of jewelry you will ever see on a baby's tiny wrist.

At Blue Poppy, the baby bird bracelet [$64] is unmatched by any of the other baby jewelry I've seen.  Made of sterling silver, these tiny bracelets are adjustable, and have a small space for engraving whatever little details strike your fancy.  Created with a tiny bird on a branch, the symbol is the perfect understated elegance that can be handed down the generations.  Not to be left out, mamas can also get the baby bird bracelet in adult sizes, as well as strut their stuff in any of Blue Poppy's other modern and slick designs.  If you are looking for that special heirloom piece, or just the perfect "wear with everything" item, definitely make Blue Poppy your first stop.

Kinder Cashmere

March 19, 2008

Girlinsandsm Like Buttah

In my continuing quest to find all things worthy of my little niece-ling princess, receiving a Kinder Cashmere sweater dress was all too apropos.  The 100% cashmere fabric is so yummy that I felt the urge to spread it on a bagel and lick it up.  The softness of the colors compliment the serene fabric so well that I found myself wanting to clothe every man, woman and child in this cashmere--just because I think it could bring world peace to one and all.  It's that soft.

Kinder Cashmere is the brain-child of Danielle Holmes, who's designs are inspired by her various travels along with the family's farm in Maine.  The line includes not only baby layette items, but blankets and pillows as well.  While the items might seem a little pricey (ranging from $30-$320), think of this as an investment.  These gorgeously understated items are definite heirlooms in the making, and are classic enough to stand the test of time.  Go ahead and indulge in a little luxury for the little one. Your descendants will thank you.

Inky Dink

March 17, 2008

Inkydink Not Dinky on Style

A few years ago I actually had interests of my own that didn’t include the dinosaur du jour.  I often forget but there was a lot to me pre-child, and anyone who knew me then would know Kung Fu and pop art were at the top of my priorities.  Once upon a time I even ventured an all-day road trip just to step inside the Andy Warhol museum.  Nothing I would dare do today with a car-phobic toddler in the back seat.  And once upon a time I wasn’t afraid to walk down a dark alley at 2 a.m. alone with my kung fu skills hidden beneath my tight jeans and heels.  As a work at home mom now, training was the first thing to go (along with the tight jeans and heels – and being out at 2 a.m. now that I think about it).

So when I caught glimpse of celebutot favorite label, Inky Dink, two of their designs really brought me back to the more selfish years.  Specifically, the layered-looking Pixel Kung Fu [$38] and the pop art short sleeve Burger Tee [$27]. But you don’t have to be my clone to share an appreciation for Inky Dink.  You do however, need to share an interest in cool graphics and half-pint sizing.  It doesn’t matter if your going for baby, girl or boy, regardless you’ll be getting a super soft cotton and tagless tee with edgy designs that will appeal to mom and dad but more importantly to the kids.  We’re not talking about dressing babies in shirts featuring our favorite punk rock bands that died out long before our kids were a glimmer (uh, sorry about that babe.)  What kid wouldn’t love a triple stack burger?  Hey it could be a veggie burger too you know.

It’s understandable why Inky Dink is found dressing most of the Hollywood tykes, they have a rock vibe that’s easy for the whole family to roll with.

Polliwalks

March 12, 2008

Polliwalks See You Later Alligator

I'm a bit of a shoe snob. And not in the way you might think. I'm more in the "Jimmy who?" camp but when it comes to sneakers and casual footwear I know my stuff. For the past two years my little guy has been pretty good about letting me tuck his toes into whatever I wish, and thankfully shares my taste in most things. Nevertheless, as we start to give him more options in the clothing department I'm starting to realize he would add a little more of the trucks, soccer balls and animals that are scarce in Mama's choosing. So, in addition to the skate shoes and the obligatory pair of Chucks you will now see my little guy sporting his newly beloved Polliwalks.

And what is so special about these shoes you might ask? For starters they look like "Gators Mom!" (or ducks, or frogs) and are oh, so comfy. Straight out of the box my 2 year old slipped them on with no mention of needing help (does it even matter what they look like when that happens?!) and it's taken some serious leverage to get him to take them off for anything. This week in my house you will have seen Polliwalks in the bath, on top of the breakfast table and snuggling in my toddlers arms, and on those feet of course.

I'm itching for the weather to break for many reasons, but I've just added the joy of seeing Polliwalks foot printing bottoms in action to my list. In sand, mud, water and dirt (or my oversized stamp pad, not that we tried it or anything) they will leave behind tracks that might just send the gator prey scurrying to higher ground. Oh and if your still on the fence, we should add that Polliwalks are Vegan and take pride in their no waste manufacturing and eco-friendly packaging.

Win it!
We have a pair of Polliwalks for one reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Polliwalks as your subject and let us know which pair you'd like. Giveaway ends March 12.

Kensington Baby

March 10, 2008

Kbaby Baby Bling

Being a mom of all boys has left me with little in the way of girls and their things.  Now that I finally have a tiny little diva-niece, I need to find things for her that stand up to her oh-so-opinionated personality.  No simple little hats will do for her royal curls, so I've been on the hunt for something to keep her melon warm and stylin'.

Enter Kensington Baby.  Their posh line of hats for boys and girls has the most adorable styles, that even this no-frills mama found herself going gaga for the flowers and ribbons.  Not to be forgotten in the diaper bag or in the bottom of the closet, every little queen bee can be seen in a hat embellished with their very first bling--Swarovski crystals and all.    Not only are these hats one of a kind, but they can last long enough (up to 18 months) for the price to be well worth it [$20-22].

Whether you're hoping to give your little angel that stand-out-in-a-crowd-vibe, or just looking for some sparkle, Kensington Baby has plenty of choices to meet the need.

Win it!

We're giving away one Kensington Baby hat of the winner's choice! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Kensington as your subject, please include your choice and mailing address. Giveaway ends midnight March 10, 2008.

Appaman

March 05, 2008

Racecars_appaman Monkey Business

I used to wonder if my son would ever choose a forever friend out of the huge mass of stuffed creatures residing in our Animal Bag. Little by little, he's started poking around and will choose an animal to tote with him for a bit. For 48 hours the "chosen one", be it a T-Rex or Teddy Bear, must not leave his sight. They will brave potty runs, afternoon naps and the dreaded toothbrushing and seem to give my little guy some super human powers, if only for a little while. And then he moves on. Maybe I'm sentimental but I'm still hoping he'll settle on just one. I think there's something to be said about the childhood adventures of a boy and his ape and I know I'm not alone.

Enter Appaman, a clothing company inspired by the adventures of designer Harald Husum and his childhood friend, Appaman (a corduroy ape). This line, dominated by high quality, tees, dresses and onesies, brings high style with a touch of whimsy to the realm of tot fashion. Iconic American images are translated into wearable art that portray the things our wee ones love (bring on the bulldogs, bikes and bubbles!) in a way that is still appealing to Mama's sensibilities.

Appaman is all about the kiddie street cred, and we think the streets just got little bit cuter.

Win it!
Two lucky readers will each win an Appaman tee (size 2)! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com, with Ape Man as your subject. Also, let us know if you'd like a boy or girls tee. Giveaway ends March 05, 2008.

Kea & Joby

March 03, 2008

Keaandjoby Soft & Sleepy

Everyone wants that perfect pair of jeans, their favorite t-shirt they have in every color, and the trusty pair of flip flops they spend every summer in.  It's the comfort and easy style we all long for, especially in these snow-boot-parka laden days.  Kea & Joby was created for just this purpose, and they've developed such a slick and relaxing kid's clothing line that I'm wishing their pieces came in grown-up sizes as well.

From the contrasting cuffs and stitching to the fabric made of spandex/rayon, Kea & Joby has thought of everything.  The colors are soothing but not boring and the various items are killing in the laid-back-funk department.  Their new spring/summer line includes more of the same awesomeness, but my favorite as of right now is still the contrast hoodie [$15]with cargo pant [$15] (winter collection).  These clothes are easily soft enough to wiggle around the house on hands and knees, and I'm convinced my baby actually napped longer in these clothes--they're that soft.  They're having a sale on the winter items in preparation for the new line, so hurry over and grab the good while you can.

Win it!
One reader will win a $100 gift certificate to Kea and Joby! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight March 30, 2008 with K&J as your subject.

Pediped Flex

February 28, 2008

Pediped_flex_demetri_navy_gray Flexing Their Foot Hold on Fashion

After unusual aches and pains during my childhood, it was learned that I was flat footed. I know, I’ll wait while you shed a tear for me. As parents we’re always determined to prevent such awful fates from happening to our own spawn so I made sure to follow the Podiatric recommendation of leaving my baby in bare feet for the first 2 years (being the niece of a podiatrist also played a roll). When the occasion called for footwear it was nothing but a thin piece of soft suede between my boy’s sole and the earth.

This was an easy feat to accomplish then something happened. He grew up and with that he was a running and jumping machine. Jumping off of playground platforms and attempting to climb trees and kick rocks. That thin piece of leather wasn’t doing my baby’s feet justice anymore. But still just a toddler, his tender toes weren’t ready for the harsh stiffness of some of the athletic shoes out there. Fortunately the minds behind pediped were in sync as their new Flex line for ages 2-5 was just launched today.

pediped™ is best known for providing infants with soft-sole stylish kicks but they are now able to add protective rubber sole shoes to their repertoire. We found the Navy and Grey Demetri Flex [$48] to fit perfectly in our active toddler’s lifestyle while the throwback styling of a retro running shoe completed his outfits perfectly.  The easy on/off Velcro closures also aid his budding independence.  pediped Flex ™ is available for all running, skipping, hopping boys and girls. While they won’t prevent any broken arms as our kids dangle from the monkey bars, we can at least take comfort the shock of their landing won’t shoot all the way up their shins. Every bit of protection helps.

Win it!

We have a pair of Pediped Flex shoes for one little boy and one little girl! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Flex as your subject and let us know if you which gender you'll need. Giveaway ends Feb 28, 2008.

Georgie Tees

February 27, 2008

GeorgieteesBecause, um, they do. Especially when you're postpartumly hormal and sleep deprived.

Things change. Have you found yourself humming and bopping along to what you thought was your favorite rock tune in your head only to realize it's an amped up rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star? Thought so. Depressing isn't it?

Ok, so maybe not depressing, just a very definitive reminder that lullabies are rocking our worlds more than we'd like to admit. Wait? What's that? Someone should totally put that on a shirt? Done, thanks to the Mama's at Georgie Tees. They've slapped Lullabies Rock and the cutest guitar graphic on a comfy organic tee that's perfectly for proclaiming your shift in musical prowess.

If you're not so much the rocking type, Georgie has a complete collection of slogany tee's for babes and tots that you'll enjoy. And don't worry Mama's, there's also a line of maternity tees just as novel as that bun in your oven.

Sandbox Threads

February 12, 2008

Sandbox My Kid Is Cooler Than Yours
I’m seriously tempted to keep secret about the gender of the bun currently in my oven- if only to avoid all the blue gingham and boats or pink ruffly frills from well-meaning gift givers. Unless of course I could send everyone over to Sandbox Threads for some actually hip and original duds for my little one.

Immediately Bill spoke to me. How can you resist these Famous Faces? Mama will certainly want one for herself. And you’re already singing In Your Eyes to your sweet angel- make it complete with the Say Anything Lloyd shirt [$17]! Seriously- could your kid be any cooler on the playground?

As soon as he or she pops out, my tiny one will be sporting the super soft & fresh 100% Organic [$17] from the Little Activists line. Choose your shirt style- from short sleeve to long- and customize the color to make yours even more different from the rest. Buying one size up never hurts- just in case- and find a sizing chart here. From gearheads to groupies, there’s a shirt in the Sandbox for every baby and tot up to size 6T.

ModesTod

February 08, 2008

Modesttod Pint Sized Fashion at Full Volume

The toddler fashion scene has made some serious strides in the right direction recently. Gone are the laments over too cute, too blue, too baby, baby wear, as it seems we've finally entered the era of kids clothes that are cool enough for the rest of us. (and yes, the cutesy baby gear is technically still out there, we just choose to look the other way!)

ModesTod offers up a selection for boys and girls that join the ranks of the rare few to delight mama's fashion sense and appeal to little one's interest. The soft vintage inspired tees in subdued hues and the embedded, quality printing will make us grown folks swoon. The graphics, in addition to a full fledged drum kit feature tractors and a funky field of pasteled flowers, because that's what kids like.

Edgy graphics aside we like the message even better. My favorite, "Boredom is the Failure of Imagination" [$32] tee, rings true from living rooms across the globe. It makes it even better knowing that the tee is printed right here in the US. And if you're still looking for a sweet Valentine's something, you might want to add the "Love Dubbed" tee to your list. (It's pink but I have an inkling my little man will be sporting it).

The brain child of our very own Mama, Cara and her other half, this mom and pop team have succeeded in pumping out a new collection of tees that rock as much as your wee one. (And yes, Grandma, babies these days do wear black).

Win it!
Two readers will get their choice of two ModesTod tees! To enter send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with MT as your subject. Please include your tee choice, size and mailing address. Giveaway ends midnight Feb. 08.

Umi Shoes

February 01, 2008

Umi Euro Styled and Playground Approved

Kids go through shoes just about as fast as they change their attitudes and because of that it's tempting for us Mama's to put them in cheap discount store kicks. When you're buying shoes every couple of months who wants to shell out big money on footwear? I definitely understand, but when it comes to protecting teeny tiny feet, quality is key.

Keeping in mind that barefoot is best for kids of any age, there comes a time (and place) when we just have to tuck their tiny toes into a pair of shoes. Our latest favorite footwear comes from American designed, Umi Shoes. Umi offers a full line sleek shoes, sandals and boots for boys and girls of all ages with a look for every occasion, we're big fans of the Cosmos for everyday, the Zazu for special occasion and the Finn sandals have me wishing summer days were a little closer.  In fact, browsing through the girly styles (for that daughter I don't have) I've found myself wishing they made some of these in grown up sizes. No such luck, but with sizes ranging from a baby 4 to big kid 4 (Euro sizes 19-36) if you love them as much as us you might not have to look anywhere else for years.

The price point is a bit high, averaging $50 a pair, but considering each shoe is handcrafted by artisans in Brazil from the highest quality materials, the classic European design that will never go out of style and those flexible soles that make them comfy as can be, it's actually quite affordable.

Win it!
We have a pair of Umi Pram Shoes for little guy or gal (Available in Euro Sizes 17-20). To enter, send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight Feb. 02 with Umi as your subject. Please include size and boy or girl.

Baby Banz

January 23, 2008

Skibanzblack Protect Those Peepers

Since most of us are freezing our booties off in what seems like the longest winter ever, I'm sure I'm not alone when I have a hard time remembering the brightness of the oh-so-elusive sun.  Day after day of dreary and gloomy skies does not make me think of sunglasses, but if I were to head out the door to my nearest ski (or sledding) hill, I'd have a wicked hankering for some shades to counter the blinding whiteness.

Baby Banz has come up with a great way to keep shades on our littlest kiddos, who's eyes are the most vulnerable when out in the sun in any climate.  They have adorable styles (not only for snow, but for the beach, pool, and stylish gals as well!) and each one has a neoprene (the material used in wetsuits) strap that is worn across the back of baby's head to keep the glasses snug and comfy.  With shatterproof materials, adjustable sizes, a 6 month warranty, and the ability to replace the lens with prescription shades, this company has seriously thought of everything.
Here's some food for thought: did you know that children don't have the filters in their eyes to block out harmful UV rays until they are 8-9 years old?  Just throwing on pair of every-day shades won't help, but in fact might make things worse.  Since the iris opens more to allow more light in (while wearing sunglasses), the eye is even more vulnerable and could potentially lead to more damage to the child's eye if you don't have the right lens protecting their peepers.  Scary, huh?
Baby Banz lenses block out the entire spectrum of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays from the sun, but do you know what all those A-B-C's mean? UVA rays are thought to be more harmful to the skin – they cause sunburn and get below the outer layer of skin. UVB rays are the rays thought to be the worst on the eye and causing damage to the retina and lens with overexposure and under-protection. UVC rays are extremely dangerous but do not reach the earth's surface due to absorption in the atmosphere.  As our atmosphere gets worse and worse, more UV rays are getting through and affecting our bodies.  Protecting those baby blues (or greens, browns or hazels...) is something we can, and should, all get behind.

Win it!
We have a pair of Ski Banz to giveaway to one sunny babe or tot! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Banz as your subject. Giveaway ends midnight January 23.

Simple_2 Green Thumbs Are So Last Season

We hear a lot about our ecological footprint these days and it's great to be mindful of the impact we have on the earth. But have you ever thought about your ecological footprint literally? Other than look and comfort, I don't think most of us pay too much attention to what goes into what goes on our feet. Thankfully the folks at Simple Shoes have done the thinking for us, presenting several lines of awesome footwear both fashionable and ecologically sound.

Introduced in 2005 Simple's GreenToe line promises to provide a product that is 100% sustainable. And with a slew of styles available for Mama's and Papa's you can find something for everyone. From the organic cotton and bamboo lining to the jute laces and so much more, what goes into these shoes is simply amazing.

Go, Goose, Go!

January 05, 2008

Gogoosego Howdy, Partner!

My son just turned two and I am loving learning the extremes of toddler mobility. He is either running full speed ahead or stepping very. very. slowly.

The toddler mosey we like to call it in these parts and in silliness it wasn't long before he was branded our little cow poke. This of course meant that he needed a cowboy outfit tonto pronto. (am I the only one who does this? I called him moose when he was a baby which led to a slew of moose themed outfits, bug when he was a bit bigger=insect cape, a couple months ago- my little dinosaur, thank you Halloween costumes... it is an amazingly dorky addiction I tell you.)

Surprisingly, the folks at Go, Goose, Go! have come up with quality cowboy attire that is seriously cool.  Fringed cow print or "pony skin" pants for the boys and skirts for your favorite cowgirl will ensure your tot is moseying along in style. Pair the pants with a bucking bronco tee for little outlaws or deputy sheriff's top for your little law upholding ladies and gents, and a cowboy hat and kerchief round out the cowpoke perfection.

Go, Goose, Go! also offers a slew of other comfy cute graphic tees and organic onesies, but I have a feeling we'll be sticking with our western gear for quite awhile.

Win it!
One Mama Speaks reader will win a Go, Goose, Go! tee or onesie of their choice! Send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Goose as your subject. Please include your pick and size. Ends January 07.

Peas on Earth

December 23, 2007

Poe Dreaming Green

We're big fans of the environment here at Mama Speaks and so by default (or force) our offspring are too. While we can proclaim our love for all things green with our words, our little one's are generally not so well spoken. Thanks to the folks at Peas on Earth [$22-$24] they can wear their opinions (ok, so maybe for now they're our opinions) loud and proud.

Whether it's an affinity for two wheeled transportation, helping out humanity or just climbing creation you'll find an organically designed, hand drawn tee to say it like they mean it. Better yet all designs are printed on super soft American made tees, with jersey styles for tots and kids and colorful classic lap tees for the babes.

You'll love the message and you little one will be enamored (and hopefully inspired) by the images of kids doing good and keeping it green.

Win it!
One lucky reader will win the tee of their of their choice! Just send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 24 with Peas as your subject. Please include your tee of choice and size. Good luck!

No-Snow Snuggler

December 10, 2007

Nosnow We Have Snow!

"It feels like Christmas" said my daughter when he looked outside the window and saw the big flakes coming down this morning. And then of course started the excitement and "let's go out and play". We got our first snow a few weeks ago and I realized we needed some better winter gear for those endless hours of playing in the snow. The biggest problem with my kids seemed to be the gap between the mittens and the jacket sleeves.

And right on time for the starting winter season  I found out about No-Snow Snugglers [$40]- the hybrid of a  fleece jacket and mittens. No-Snow Snuggler is a perfect mid-layer under a winter jacket and comes with the water-proof mittens attached. The perfect solution for keeping mittens in sight and preventing the nasty cold from creeping into your child's arms. For older children there is No-Snow II [$42]- a fleece jacket with a protective arm warmer and a fingerless glove.

In my opinion every kid in our Rocky Mountain winter wonderland should have a No-Snow Snuggler and in the warmer states this might be the only winter jacket your child needs!

Win it!
We have a No Snow Snuggler in Cobalt (size 2T) for one chilly kid. To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight December 10 with Snow as your subject and fill in this blank: No Snow Snuggler is brought to you by Crazy _ _ _ _ , LLC.

Pediped Footwear

Pediped So That’'s Why They Make Baby Shoes

I never understood why so many mama's insisted on putting shoes on their little infant’s feet. My thought was always that if they weren't in the business of walking, why put something on their feet? But, boy was I wrong. After the birth of my son, I couldn't help but be mesmerized by all of the tiny little shoes and boots that so many companies make. I would snatch up every pair of fancy black dress shoes, cool sporty tennis shoes, and all so grown up brown casual Sunday best shoes that I could find. The only problem was that the more I loved them, the more my son didn't. I came to discover that none of those shoes were comfortable for him. They were either too stiff or too heavy, leaving him an unhappy camper while his feet were imprisoned inside of them. Mama started to think, “there must be something better out there- and sure enough, Mama was right.

Pediped’'s motto is “"The next best thing to bare feet”" and it couldn't be more true! Their footwear have two layer’s of premium, non-toxic ECO-grade leather plus a 3mm foam cushion on the soles, leaving them flexible enough to keep baby moving freely. Cushion equals comfy for the little guys, while non-toxic equals happy for mom. And Pediped footwear provides support and protection during the developmental stages of baby’s feet, from the initial crawl to the very first steps.

Pediatricians recommend that children up to the age of 2 either go barefoot or wear soft, pliable shoes like Pediped's. And this mama won't argue; because this company gives me the best of both worlds! Cool shoes that are actually GOOD for those ever growing feet.

With the fashion-forward styles that Pediped’ offers and the fact that baby likes them too, is reason enough for me. I personally love the Andrew [$39], it's just the perfect pair to keep those little toes cozy on chilly days. But I must say that if I had a baby girl, the Giselle [$30] would definitely be covering her little feet. And we hear they'll be covering bigger feet come 2008!

Win it!

We're giving away two pairs of Pediped's, a pair of Liam's (6/12 months) for one lucky boy and Faith (12/18 months) for one gorgeous gal. To enter, send an email to giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by Midnight December 05, with Pediped as your subject. Let us know the name of the family behind the footwear and which pair you'd like.
