Himalayan Salt Lamps

July 09, 2008

Salt_lamps_2Salty Escape

While life as mom to a two year old is insanely glamorous, there are moments when I just need to chill out. And, well, since I am often incapable of turning it of myself, I'm always on the lookout for stuff to let me do just that. I will readily admit that my house if full of useless gizmo's and gadgets that promised to give me some solace and failed to deliver but I this time, I'm happy to introduce you to one that bring it home.

The Himalayan Salt Lamps from Solay Wellness are a unique addition to any home. These beautiful therapeutic lamps are made of hand chiseled salt crystals from the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. The crystals in various sizes and colors are then mounted on hardwood and include a light with dimmer knob that slips inside. The result is glow that is not only gorgeous but good for you. The lamps generate negative ions that cleanse the air and don't lose their power over time. Now, I know a few of you are rolling your eyes out there, it's ok, my husband did the same when I touted this benefit, but even he said it was cool enough to love otherwise.

My salt lamp sits on my desk beside my computer and while that might seem a bit counterproductive it's the perfect little reminder of balance that by crazy beautiful life needs.  Oh, and that two year old of mine wanted me to let you know that when I told him it was salt he just had to investigate and take a lick. We assure you, it's the real thing.

MomAgenda Desktop

July 05, 2008

Momagenda_2 The Sort of Agenda That Will Get You Somewhere. Possibly Even On Time

Whether you're suffering from a permanent case of baby brain (this would be me) or are simply struggling to keep the lives of adults and many little people in check (because come on! why can't keep those soccer, gymnastics, story time, playgroup schedules straight already?!) we have a workable solution to finally get it out of your head and in front of your eyes in a way that is, well, organized.

The momAgenda Desktop planner [$42] is just what I've needed to stop stressing and get my life in check. With a monthly overview and a weekly breakdown with space to plan individually for you and four kids, you can quickly see who is doing what and when. What? No more taking Jackson to Chloe's ballet practice by mistake? Ok, so we can't guarantee that, but this will definitely help. There's even a dinner listing at the close of each day so you can menu plan and know what day you need to pick up what from the store.

It's much more than just a calender though. Rather than featuring those useless world maps and charts that we all end up ripping out of the front of our store bought planners, momAgenda has packed the front full of favorite web-sites including everything from health and finance to mom blogs (ahem, maybe we'll make the next issue?!), online resources, toll-free numbers that you'll really use and holidays galore. In the back you'll find an awesome journal/planning section and a momEssentials address book.

And if you're anything like me, you are just starting to think about getting organized now that the year is half gone. No worries though, momAgenda has us covered. The 2008-2009 version begins in August of this year and will take you through the end of 2009. Oh, and did I mention it comes in pink? Yep, personalizable pink and four other funky colors. And ladies, please don't be offended if next time you ask to hang we say we have to check our schedules first, head on over and check out our new sanity saver, you'll totally understand.

That Baby

July 01, 2008

That_baby That Baby's Got Soul

Most people have at least one copy of one of those baby CD's or DVD's, and most people have listened or watched them so many times that they'd like to accidentally lose them rather than hear those songs one.more.time.  Or have to watch a top spinning for the billionth time.  Or have to see a mobile spinning around and around until you want to cry because you miss the days when you could just play your own favorite band all day long with wild abandon.

Well thankfully OyBaby hears our pleas and has swooped in to save us.  That Baby DVD [$25] and That Baby CD [$15] [$35 for the set] are the hip version of those other guys, and are sure to satisfy your folksy soul.  As you listen to covers of songs by Joni Mitchell and Natalie Merchant, your baby watches images that swirl and excite, along with kids playing and laughing.  No more chicken noises or watching penguins over and over.  My baby actually doesn't even like those other guys, so I'm thrilled to finally have a DVD that he can enjoy.  He loves to relax or wiggle his baby booty to the songs, and enjoys them in the car when we're out and about.  That Baby products are for ages 0-5, and my 3yo and 5yo enjoyed them as well.  In fact, I would say that the DVD even got them excited about cleaning up the playroom, but I worry if I say that out loud the magic will disappear.  Pretend you didn't just read that.

OyBaby is run by husband and wife team Rob and Lisa Wolf, and we at MamaSpeaks love to promote small businesses doing great things.  Go to That Baby's website to watch a clip of the DVD, and get your own copies of these fun and funky sets.

Wagamama Baby, Baby Zabu Play Mat

June 13, 2008

Wagamama I have a “soft spot” for my baby’s booty

Oh, the ever important floor time. We have heard over and over again how important it is for our babies to get down to the nitty gritty for the sake of their physical development. But what if your floor is, well, nitty and gritty?

The Baby Zabu play mat [$88-$135] from Wagamama Baby is a totally versatile, totally tote-able play mat for babies at all stages, from back-laying, to tummy-time, to sitting, to crawling, to trying to escape over the sides, this mat is where it’s at. Lay the smaller-sized Zabu flat for an ample play area, or go with the biggie for serious acreage. Fold up the sides and tie the corners to create an enclosed space for baby to lounge. When it’s time to get on the move, roll up your Zabu and use the convenient, color-coordinated carrying strap that makes this mat easy to throw in the car and be on hand whenever you need a clean, safe spot for your child.

But be ready for passersby to stop and ask you about it. With a range of nearly a dozen gorgeous prints and several materials from which to choose – corduroy, brushed canvas, denim, and the new bamboo/cotton blend – the place where your babe’s bottom sits will be bound to turn heads.

Be aware though, when it’s time to wash your Zabu, you need to remove the pads, and getting them back in is quite a challenge. Each side pad needs to fit through a small opening, and although I did this as gently as possible, two of the seams on mine ripped several inches. Wagamama has assured us that they've made the openings bigger on the new season’s styles. I’d like to see some reinforced stitching along the edges of the openings as well.

For our peace of mind: The Wagamama website and the Zabu’s tag suggest inserting this mat into a crib or playpen as a mattress pad and bumper combination, as well as using it as a place for your child to nap. This product has not been approved by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association or any other organization as a safe sleep surface for infants, however, and so Mama Speaks is recommending the Zabu be used as a play mat only.

Stroller Strides + BOB Fitness Stroller

June 09, 2008

Stroller_strides_2 Striding into Shape

I used to be a yoga nut. Hours spent stretching, meditating and centering myself. Hours spent using my own body to whip my behind into shape. And then I had a baby. In his early days the last thing on my mind was exercise, but lets face it, there comes a time when we start to realize that if nothing else we need to set a good example (and those last few pounds of baby weight aren't going anywhere on their own). So, I started searching for a program I could get into, outside of the house, preferably with my kiddo in tow. There are options a plenty for moms with newborns and many kid centered exercise classes, but my searches turned up nothing for me, the mom of a rambunctious 2 year old, who desperately needs some fitness in my life.

Enter Stroller Strides and lots and lots of lots of thanks. Started, of course, by a Mama in the same predicament I found myself, this 60 minute outdoor workout is the perfect fit for any mom at any fitness level. Babies, tots and even big kids can happily come along for the ride as you power walk and jog your way into shape. If that doesn't sound at all enticing (believe me, I. Don't. Run.) don't worry, it's not all about movement. One of the best things is that everything is in intervals. The class I attended began with a stationary warm up, power walk and then several stops along the way to use resistance tubes to work our upper bodies all while singing silly songs for the kids or chatting it up with the other Mamas. Yes, there were some sprints and stair stepping thrown in there too, but the focus is whole body and everyone is encouraged and expected to work at their own pace.

On that note, I should mention that I was terrified I'd show up to class and find a group of fit, firm, super moms ready to get their warm up in before the ultra marathon. Thankfully that wasn't the case, my class at least, was full of real moms, there for the same reasons I was. Believe me, we all huffed and puffed and groaned in unison.

You don't need any special equipment to participate in Stroller Strides other than your body and your babe but I would definitely recommend a decent jogging stroller if you're serious about sticking with it. Since they're the pros, Stroller Strides has teamed up with BOB to provide the official Stroller Strides Fitness Stroller [$399]. This baby can roll like no other, providing an amazingly smooth ride over any urban terrain. The child compartment is comfy and cushy, complete with lots of leg room and it's very own pockets for you little one's drink, snacks or toys.

The stroller itself is built for fitness with a swiveling front wheel, awesome suspension system and options a plenty. Best of all, it includes a Stroller Strides Fitness Kit made up of a handlebar console with drink holder, exercise tubes, fitness manual and a gift certificate for a free week of local classes. And when your body is aching and sore after class whipped you into shape, the quick release, easy fold will spare your nerves and bod that last task of wrestling the stroller back into the trunk.

Minusbags

May 31, 2008

Minusbags Subtracting From the Landfill, One Bag at a Time

There is nothing that excites us more than seeing reusable bags become all the rage. (ok, so maybe there are some things, but this is really exciting!) You've of course seen us cover many bags here, but it's amazing to actually see them in use when we're out and about. I was so happy to see that even our tiny, local, behind the times grocer recently added a stack of branded reusable bags for sale near the checkout lanes. Unfortunately, places like that miss the boat a bit. Sure they're cheap but their shopping totes are big enough to hold a few apples and are, well, I'll just say it- they are U-G-L-Y. If I thought those were my only option I'd be reaching for those plastic bags too.

But wait right there, because Minusbags ($16) are to the rescue! These simple, stylish and sturdy totes are made of 100% cotton and are some of the roomiest we've seen. You'll find rich solid colors, emblazoned with simple circle "fruit" graphics and you can choose a bag with a 13 inch handle to grasp in your hand (guys) or a 22 inch handle perfect for slinging over your shoulder (we definitely recommend this). Large enough to hold 2 or 3 plastic bags full of groceries these will not only minimize waste, but minimize what you have to carry. Because lets face it, even us die hard reusable baggers don't like hitting up the supermarket with 20 bags in tow.

If that's not enough for you to head on over and load up your (virtual) shopping cart, keep in mind that using one Minusbag for a year will eliminate over 300 plastic bags from the waste stream. Your ONE bag, takes out over 300! We're sold. And now we're off to our summer's first farmer's market, Minusbags in hand.

Ball Baby Carriers

May 29, 2008

Ball_babyWave Your Hands in the Air, Because You Finally Can

I’m sure we don’t need to remind you what proud babywearing Mamas we are. While the benefits of babywearing go on and on, the one that continues to top the list for me was regaining use of my hands. My hands, my hands! I can use them to do so many useful and fun things again, eat that T-rex!

While you’re free to venture into the rough google waters of “baby carriers” on your own, we recommend getting started with Ball Baby Carriers. Ball Baby Carriers specializes in several variations of the asian-inspired carriers like podeagis [$95] and mei tais [$70+]. My son was born large and my neck and back were already weak. I had a short window where slings worked for me and I was fearful my babywearing days were numbered when they should just be getting started. I was then introduced to a mei tai carrier and once again body balance was restored. Mei Tais allowed me to carry my then baby turned enormous toddler for hours on end without pain, still to this almost three years old day.

Ball Baby Carriers has a great selection of mei tais including solids for the simplistic, panels for those with a bit of a wild streak all the way to their popular Overall Mei Tais. These are for the all or nothing type of guy or gal. If you love a fabric like our full on funky zebra print, then you luh-huv a fabric and want to wrap it all over you and your baby. The construction of our Ball Baby carrier is extremely sturdy with reinforced stitching in all the right places. The straps were wider and padding-free unlike what I was used to but I found this to be a blessing in disguise. The wide straps hugged my shoulders distributing the weight more evenly and prevented potential digging in to the little one going for a ride.  However they were still a little long for my 5’ 5” frame. The mei tai body was also wider and shorter which helped boost up my passenger but also made me prefer this for an older infant or toddler versus a newborn.

We know you’ll love your reclaimed full range of motion and comfort of your Ball Baby Carrier.  My only request while you’re out enjoying your pretty new mei tai while being hunted down by curious moms that must know where you got that fabulous “what is that” carrier?  Please don’t confuse mei tai with mai taiMei tai should be pronounced as may-tie unless you’re going for wishful thinking.  Just send them on over to Ball Baby Carriers and enjoy the two free hands you now have to double fist all the mai tais you want.

Traveling With Tots Guide

May 28, 2008

Have Tot Will Travel

Travelguide_2No, it will never ever be the same again.  Jaunts to the tropics will now include buckets in the sand (and we don’t necessarily mean the kind filled with beer) and urban explorations will have you cursing the lack of parking (and we aren’t talking about parking your car).  But it’s not all gloom and doom, with the right tools and sanity savers, traveling with kids can still be downright fun. Having just survived my own family vacation with toddler in tow, I know the excitement turned anxiety you can feel planning the perfect getaway.  I turned to the experts, the Mama Speaks archives, and refreshed my memory on already tried and true products that are must haves for sane travel.  We’ve compiled them all here in our first Traveling With Tots Guide and have introduced even more goodies that are worth that extra suitcase.

To and Fro, A Traveling We Will Go

Baby B’air Safety Vest ($35)

Babybair_2Getting there is half the battle, even if you are ditching the car seat at baggage check and opting for the free lap fare.  But we never want to compromise on safety.  Although nothing can replace the safety of a car seat, Baby B’air is a must for little lap riders.  A vest, available in infant and toddler size, which attaches to Mama’s seat belt, this will help keep your most precious cargo in place in the event of unexpected turbulence. See Win it!

CARES Safety Belt ($75)

CaresOnce you’ve graduated from the car seat all together and there is no getting around paying for that extra child fare, you’ll feel a little more secure knowing your youngin’ really is securely fastened.  The CARES safety belt is a portable safety harness which easily installs to the airplane seat and is FAA approved. See Win it!

Baggage, With You For Life

Sammies Funyface ($60)

Sammies_ladybugThere is no escaping the desire for the young but independent to stroll their own luggage through the bustling airport. Instead of an adult sized suitcase, get one they can handle.  And no, we don’t mean the $13 one from the local discount department store, trust us, the wheels will break off and you’ll want to take off from the chaos sure to follow.  The Sammies Funnyface by Samsonite provides the same quality we expect from such a name and a look that will make any kid proud among the business travelers.

Trunki ($40)

TrunkiThis is one suitcase that needs to bypass baggage check.  Designed to be pulled along by ages 3 and up, Trunki provides plenty of space for the little one’s things and a place to rest the little one’s rump.

Little Kid Backpack ($36)

DinobagEveryone needs to pull their weight.  Whether you are looking for some extra snack storage or vacating the emergency entertainment to their own domain, the Little Kid Backpacks from Dante Beatrix are truly toddler sized.  They are light, extremely roomy, durable and the straps won’t slip for real all day comfort. Enter mamaspeaks 20% in the notes to vendor section at checkout for 20% off through June 15.

Tame the Hunger, Tame the Beast

Foogo Leak-Proof Food Jar ($19)

Foogo_food_jar_blue_2We’re not suggesting you prepare a full course meal while vacationing but snag some extra pieces of sliced fruit from your free continental breakfast and skip the $8 overpriced tourist apple.  But make sure to toss it into your compact insulated Foogo Food Jar by Thermos for your day’s excursions which will keep your cool things cool (or your hot things hot) for hours.  It’s durable, considerably light and safe - BPA, Phthalate and PVC free, so you can snack without worry.

Cotton Snack Sacks ($5+)

Lunch_sack_ecobagsWe don’t leave home without our nuts for protein, ever, but we’ve long since ditched the disposable baggies for obvious landfill reasons. These cotton snack sacks from ECOBAGS, in both recycled or organic cotton, are the perfect portability solution for dry goods.  Available in two sizes for the easy portioning with drawstring or Velcro-like closure.

Portable Almond Tin ($2.50)

Almond_tinCalifornia Almonds is already one step ahead of us with their very own compact “perfect portion” portable tin for their finest almonds.  Load your suitcase up with enough for every family member.  Each tin holds exactly one ounce of almonds, just the boost you need to make it that final stretch back to your hotel.

Klean Kanteen ($15+)

Kleen_kanteen_Save all those dollars you’d spend on water from the vending machine and buy some kitschy souvenir.  Klean Kanteen can outfit your entire family with a portable, safe water bottle, from sippys to family sized versions.  Also available is every kind of accessory you can think of from loop caps to insulated totes.  Water on the go has never been so convenient.

 Kiipis Bib Clips ($12)

KiipisWith all this snacking on the run, messes are sure to strike, but do you really want to be slowed down by pounds of dirty bibs? Keep a set of Kipiis Bib clips handy and always be ready to whip up impromptu protection by grabbing the nearest absorbent anything and clip away.

Hungry Tote ($20)

Hungry_toteAnd just where will all this snackage go?  The PVC-free, machine washable Hungry Tote by Built NY will keep your food and drinks cool and accidental spills where they belong.

Don’t Leave Home Without It

SafetyTat ($20)

SafetytatIf your toddler is anything like mine, he will do everything he can to sight see solo.  If you’re among gobs and gobs of tourists, it can be all too easy to lose sight.  You can find some peace of mind with SafetyTat.   Whether your child has special needs or just needs help finding his way back to Mom and Dad, SafetyTat provides you with 30 customizable temporary, latex-free tattoos.  You’ll always be just a phone call away.

Cleanwell Sanitizer ($10+)

Clean_wellChances are if you are touching it, so did a billion other people.  You can either live in complete paranoia or spend your entire trip scrubbing away germs in the public restroom (and ew, talk about germs).  Cleanwell is an alcohol-free, all-natural hand sanitizer that is only toxic against infectious bacteria.  The individual wipes pack make sanitizing on tour a breeze. Enter mspeaks at checkout for 20% off your entire purchase.

California Baby Suncare ($10+)

California_baby_2Most vacations result in many hours in the sun regardless of which pole you’re heading towards.  Make sure your baby is protected with something chemical and PABA-free like the complete line of sun protection from California Baby.  The Sunblock Stick can easily slip into your pocket for effortless touch ups and the DEET-free bug repellent will keep unwanted pests at bay.

When the 7 Wonders Still Aren’t Entertainment Enough

Ring Flash Cards ($12)

Ring_flash_cardsIt’s hard to find portable playthings that won’t leave you looking for the pieces.  The Ring Flash Cards from Mudpuppy will provide entertainment and education while sticking together thanks to their reclosable ring which can easily hook on to your diaper bag.  And if Europe is your destination, you can brush up on your Spanish or French on the flight over.

Peek-A-Boo Bag ($15)

Peekaboo_bagYour plane has been taxiing for hours and you can’t bear the sound of anymore electronic playthings.  Break out your Peek-A-Boo Bag for some good old exploration with your child from the comfort of your cramped seat.  Fun for the both of you, I Spy-style.

Crocodile Creek Two-Sided Puzzles ($4)

Crock_creekThese compact puzzles are travel-friendly in their own box measuring just 3.5” x 2.5.”  Just toss one in your diaper bag and break it out when the dining in Italy is a little slower paced than our fast-food nation is used to and way too slow for a jet-lagged tot. The 5”x7” when complete puzzle is challenging enough to pass the time between courses and if you complete it before dessert is served, just flip it over to the printed reverse side for a whole new challenge.

Attire That Won’t Tire

Congratulations shirt ($20+)

Congrats_milk_bomb_2Sometimes the only thing to do is to make light of a potentially very heavy situation.  Hopefully your neighbor will find the humor in this “Congratulations! You get to sit near me.” Infant and toddler tee from Milk Bomb. If he doesn’t find it funny, he can’t say you didn’t warn him.

BabyLegs ($12)

Baby_legs_organicWeather is unpredictable and you can either pack for 4 seasons or think easy layers.  BabyLegs would have saved us all on our recent trip to the where’s-the-Sunshine State.  Easy on, easy off and easy diaper bag storage, they’ll be a lifesaver if the day’s events go on longer than the warmth.  Mama can even slip them on for instant long sleeves.

Around the World Onesie ($24)

Around_the_world_onesieMaybe you just went to Grandma’s on the other coast but to your babe, it can feel as though he just took a trip around the world.  He survived, you survived, so we think the Around the World onesie by mini globetrotter will be a nice reminder of his first and surely not his last trip.  He’s just getting started racking up the frequent flier miles.

Overwhelmed?  Start and End Here.

Jazzy Toes

May 07, 2008

Jazzytoes Spirit Fingers, Jazzy Toes

It's no secret that girly clothes and accessories pretty much out number their boy counterparts by a landslide.  I've always had to work hard to find cute and cool duds for my three boys, so I love it when I find a company that works to fill that void.  Jazzy Toes was invented for this reason--to provide funky socks for little boys to crawl and giggle in style.

Jazzy Toes has 6 different styles of socks that all look like various forms of grown up shoes we all know and love.  There's cowboy boots, tennis shoes and my own favorite, the wing tips [$25]. Each one has a non-skid grip on the bottom for any little one working on the walking, and each set comes with 6 pairs of funky socks.  The box sets are packaged in a ready-to-mail gift box that not only looks cool, but reduces packaging and saves you the time and paper needed to wrap it yourself.

Glamorous Girl

May 01, 2008

Glamorous_girl Nothing But The Finer Things

If you are on the hunt for cute hair accessories, whether it be for your daughter, niece or your own silky mane, the options can be a little overwhelming. There are hundreds upon hundreds of little online shops selling clippies, headbands, bows and more.  The one thing most of these places have in common is that their items are relentlessly unsophisticated. Anyone wanting just a simple and cute hair accessory usually ends up settling rather than scoring.

Now, thanks to another awesome Etsy find, we have some cool, adorable and sophisticated options for dressing up our tresses.  Glamorous Girl Accessories [$3-7] has a wide selection of simple and chic ribbon clips (and more) that any little darlin would love to show off.    From mod dots to pretty peonies, every personality can find something just right at this sweet little shop.  Even the perfectly constructed flower and butterfly clips have this non-girly mama drooling and wishing for my own set.  My personal favorites, the vintage enamel hair pins, leave me wondering how I got by without these delicious bobbles before now, and thrilled to have finally found a store to meet my funky hair needs.

Chesapeake Ribbons

April 23, 2008

Chesapeake_ribbons Just Cinch It

So often, cute belts for kids are overlooked by clothing designers or made but are too bulky and fussy. We've had one childs' belt (just one!) in our house for years, and it's been handed down the brother-line just because it's the only belt I could ever find that was funky and functional.  It's orange (yet worn all the time despite the lack of matching) and the ribbon/D-ring style that we all love.  I have yet to find another belt for my boys that was worth the money or the fuss--until now.

Meet Chesapeake Ribbons, the brain-child of a regular stay-at-home mom looking to fill a void in the hair ribbon and ribbon belt arenas.  Chesapeake Ribbon belts are made really well and are fun enough to be a gift for a friend or a special item for your little one in need of some cinching.  No shocker here--our personal favorite is the Black Skulls [$12-14], or as my son calls it, the "pirate belt".   Perusing the other styles, you'll find something for everyone.  The simple yet classic child, the preppy child, the sporty child, the one of a kind child (custom make your belt!) and of course the emo child.  In case you were starting to covet a belt for yourself, you can also find these adult sizes.  Go ahead and turn this little fashion accessory into a fashion statement, and I'll even look the other way while you and your child wear matching belts at the next playgroup.  At least they'll be cool.

Earth Day 2008: Simply Green

April 22, 2008

Earthdayguide What is Earth Day?
Earth Day broadens the base of support for environmental programs, rekindles public commitment and builds community activism around the world through a broad range of events and activities.  Since the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, Earth Day has been an annual event for people around the world to celebrate the earth and renew our commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner world for us all.

Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a half billion people participate in Earth Day Network campaigns every year, and we at Mama Speaks are thrilled to give you our take on this massively important day.

Where to begin?

GorgeouslygreenThe first place to start bringing the heart and soul of Earth Day back to your family is by taking an overview of your lifestyle. Author Sophie Uliano has written the book Gorgeously Green: 8 Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly LIfe to help with just that--lifestyle change.  Gorgeously Green is practically the bible on green living for women who are new or veteran to the eco-conscious way of living.  You'll find ideas for your beauty, body and bungalow, and that's just scratching the surface.  There's a handy checklist to see where you fall in your green living ways that is very helpful in really evaluating what you can and cannot change.  I love Sophie's commitment to "simple", as I have a hard time committing to green principles that aren't also simple.  The book is full of ideas and resources, and I think that it's a must-have for new eco moms-in-training.

Want to get in on the action?

WeaddupThere are many ways you can get involved. Volunteer. Go to a festival. Install solar panels on your roof. Organize an event where you live. Change a habit. Help launch a community garden. Communicate your priorities to your elected representatives. The possibilities are endless! Do something nice for the earth, have fun, meet new people, and make a difference.  You can go here to see the Earth Day 2008 Calendar (even though a lot of events were held over the weekend, there are still plenty of things to attend, so be sure to check it out!) and find out where to head first.  Also, the peeps at We Add Up are starting a revolution of awareness with the idea that "no one can do everything, but everyone can do something". Using organic cotton tees, they've come up with a fun and immediate way for each of us to get "counted" in the fight for our Earth.  Go to Wee Add Up to get your own number hand printed on a tee, or on a tote saying "Neither" (as in, "Paper or plastic?  Neither."), and help show the world that each of our choices really do add up.

Herobags A fun and easy change to make at home is getting rid of the plastic bags.  We are a big fan of reusable bags, having reviewed several here at Mama Speaks.  The latest we've added to our reusable family is Hero Bags. Not only are they made from recycled cotton and come in a large and medium sizes [$15-17], Hero Bags has also come out with a kicky little Mini Hero [$16.50] that you are sure to find irresistible.  Perfect as a lunch bag, the Mini Hero also became the perfect reusable companion for my kids while we're out and about.  I swoon over Hero Bags' simple and funky angel wing logo, and have happily added them to our growing collection.

Greentogrow We all know that breast is best for it's health benefits and it's the most environmentally sound as well. But if you're reaching for a bottle we have one safe and sound for you. With all the fuss in the news about toxic plastics, it's a good idea to focus on which plastic products we CAN bring home to the kids.  Green To Grow has come out with a line of BPA-free plastic baby bottles [$8-11] that are as cute as they are healthy.  Made from PES plastic, these bottles have a natural golden color to them that we simply love.  We work to make sure what's going into our babies is safe, so it's important to take that concept all the way and ensure a safe bottle to boot.

Bodybutter Not only is it crucial what we put IN our bodies, but also what we put ON our bodies.  Most of the creams, body butters and lotions on the market today are full of chemically laden fragrances, a disturbing amount of alcohol, and many other frightening and unnecessary fillers.  We're big fans of all natural body skin care that actually works, and one of our favorite's can be found on Etsy.  FlipFlopMamma has created her own perfect blend of ingredients to make some seriously soft and delicious body creams.  My favorite, the cookie dough scented Bee Good To Your Body Butter [$12.50] leaves me in a predicament of whether or not to eat it or put it on my skin.

Idealbite As you can tell, we really care about your health and the health of our planet, which is why we review scores of green products and run weekly green speak features to give you the low down on what's good and what's not.  Also, our friends at Ideal Bite offer fresh, down to Earth green living ideas in "bite-size" servings--right in your inbox.  You'll love the easy and simple ways they think of to explain and encourage us all to live healthy and guilt-free.  Go here to sign up for their daily newsletter.

Enjoy Earth day, and remember that even one change can make a difference!

Scootababy Baby Carrier

April 17, 2008

Scootababy2_2 Hip and Happy

As the owner of baby sling company, I generally pass all of our babywearing gear onto the other Mama's, just because. But, even I would occasionally like a break from my ring sling. I can't tell you how long I've been searching for the perfect hip carrier only to have my many promising prospects turn out to be flops.

You may have already heard a little bit of buzz in the blogosphere about this one, but it's one thing that we are happy to jump on the bandwagon for. The Scootababy Baby Carrier [$107] combines the best features from the babywearing hall of fame to create what I'm happy to say is the PERFECT carrier for holding baby hip side. The wide, padded waist band, buckles on easily and distributes weight and support evenly across your core. Baby will be happy to perch in a lightly padded, shaped seat reminiscent of a classic mei tai. My favorite feature, and the one you can all send thank you letters of love to Scootababy for later, is the sling like shoulder cuff made of comfy stretchy fleece. It is like a little slice of babywearing heaven, my friends.

I will admit I may have wrinkled my nose a bit when I heard the Scootababy had a denim shell, but wow! The deep dark color is stylish, sleek and will hold up to all the wear and tear you can dish out. The limited edition Jellybean print provides the perfect bit of sass and while you can't really see it from the outside, we love that funky on the inside feel. We can't imagine why you'd want to take this baby off, but if you do it will fold/roll up nicely and tucks right inside it's very own pouch.

With a 34 pound, 3 foot tall, 2 year old, just about any method of carrying, from ring slinging to me trusty old arms, is a workout to say the least. Thanks to Scootababy, my back and I survived a day with a sick, sleepy boy perched atop my hip. Oh, and if your babe is a bit smaller than mine, don't worry, babies 5 months old all the way up to 40 pounds will snuggle right up with ease.

Story Time Felts

April 14, 2008

Farmbook Come on Mama, Felt IS Fun

I'm starting to think that us mama's need to add some preschool teachers to our toy advisory teams. We've recently stumbled upon a glorious playtime addition only to find our new discovery has been rocking the preschool circuit since, oh, the beginning of time. You'll find all the fun at Story Time Felts and while I'll admit, the products might not look all that exciting to the average mom, you will be pleasantly surprised.

You'll find felt boards, dolls, large costume pieces for dramatic play and our favorite activity books. We highly recommend the pre-cut and assembled option as there are pieces aplenty and well, we already have enough to do. Each themed book is bound of sturdy felt pages and feature opening flaps, slots and plenty of space for your child to create. The tops of the pages open to pouches perfect for storing all of the people and accessories that complement each book. We took our Down on the Farm Activity book on a recent cross country road trip and I was amazed at the hours (yes hours!) of quiet entertainment it provided for both my two year old and 19 year old sister.

The Story Time site isn't the easiest to navigate but the extra scrolling and clicks are worth for the endless amount of (quiet!) fun the products provide. So head on over and see what you can dig up to entertain your brood. In the meantime, I'll be trying to cozy up to some preschool teachers to see what we can come up with next.

How Fast They Grow

April 09, 2008

Hftg Ain't That The Truth

In the past year (since my son was born) I have taken a massive amount of pictures. And I know that I am not the only mama with this addiction! We have all these pictures, just bottled up on our hard drives, our memory sticks, and our flash drives; just sitting there, because as all new mother's know, we don't have much time to perfectly place them in a "First Years" Baby Book or heaven forbid, spend hours and hours on an intricate (and expensive at that) scrapbook. Now, I love scrapbooking, don't get me wrong. I think you can pour your heart and soul onto a scrapbook page and it can be so beautiful. But I just don't have the energy, time, or money to go about the hobby in a proper manner. And traditional photo albums aren't really my style.

How Fast They Grow is an amazing company that is known for their "7-Minute Scrapbook Page", and I can honestly say it's remarkable. With their easy to use program Digi-Scrapbook, all you have to do is drag, drop, and type to make a beautiful, unique, and completely personalized 12X12 scrapbook page [$7.50 each]. The program includes features that allow you to change the fonts and the colors, as well as crop and cut your images with a simple click of the mouse. They offer a wide variety of templates with different colors and themes so you can customize them to your own perfection. All of their pages are printed on acid-free high quality card stock and with proper care can be archived to last longer than traditional scrapbook pages. Just make sure to proofread your pages carefully, because there isn't someone on the other end making sure you spelled everything correctly. Let's just say, I learned the hard way!

By simply setting up a FREE account with How Fast They Grow you will be able to save and share your pages with their online system, as well as receive monthly newsletters with tips and ideas from other "scrapbookers" like yourself.  And with the easiness of the program, you could very well complete an entire book in just a few hours. One you place your order, they ship it out immediately. And after you see the pages for yourself, you'll discover that the quality is unbeatable. You can literally open the envelope and directly place the pages in your own scrapbook (or you can order a book from their shop).

If you want to show off your adorable pictures in a creative and unique way, How Fast They Grow is here to help. With all of the options and selections they offer, you'll be able to make a one of a kind scrapbook, in record time. And anything to save a little time, is alright by me.

Wee Wee Wear

April 01, 2008

Bakeme_g_t Wee’s the Word

I know that it has become fairly easy to find websites and companies out there that make funky little tee’s for our funky little ones, but I can’t tell you how excited I was to stumble upon the mom-created, Wee Wee Wear. Not only do they have t-shirts [$24] with sayings like “Backseat Driver” and “Love Ya Like Cake”, but since each one is made to order and not mass produced, you can get them in a variety of colors and styles. If you fancy a onesie or a tee (short-sleeved or long), you can find each and every style in either one. Also, Wee Wee Wear tries to give you option to veer the shirt towards a little gal or a little guy. And since the prints are generally gender neutral, you’re sure to be able to get exactly what you want. Did I mention that they are made out of 100% super fine interlock combed cotton? Oh I didn’t? Because seriously, this shirt is so soft you’ll wanna cuddle with it even if your babe’s NOT wearing it!

In addition to all the other charismatic shirts you’ll find Allergy Awareness Tee’s [$20] and Buttons [$5]. With over 12 million people in the United States suffering from food allergies (the majority of them being school-aged children), what a great idea to make it known right there for the world to see. A portion of the proceeds from this line goes to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Networks and helps support 2008's Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward a Cure.

I know our little one’s grow so fast, but why not dress them in something that is funky as they are while they are still letting us pick out their clothes!

Marmalade Ink

March 28, 2008

Marmaladeink Something To Write Home About

The personalized greetings by Marmalade Ink are not the usual cutesy variety that you see available online these days. No frills and fluff or generic colors here- these vibrant cards and invitations stand out above the rest and express your style with style.

For certain there is a birth announcement to fit your growing family. Your special arrival deserves the royal treatment with the Brandon Michael announcement [$57 for a set of 25] and Adoption announcements like the beautiful GraceAnne gracefully let the whole world know about your new addition. Send the classiest Holiday cards this year that will surely be on display by all your acquaintances. And next birthday, personalize a rockin’ invitation like the Jeremy James [$50 for 25].

We were most excited by the Kids Lined Stationery Pads [$32]. Oh, it is so hard it is to find lined paper! Not to mention paper this cool and personalized with your child’s photo and name. My Noah couldn’t wait to write his grandparents a letter and will also be composing a “What I Did Over Spring Break” note to his teacher this week! His eyes were so wide with excitement when he saw this electric guitar notepad of his very own. What a fabulous gift idea for any young writer.

It’s not all about the kids; Marmalade Ink has Something for Mom, too. Take time to send a creative note of your own. Express who you are and encourage the whole family to recapture the lost art of letter writing and sending through the post. There’s nothing like getting a real live letter in the mail.

The Gifted Grasshopper

March 25, 2008

Giftedgrasshopper2 Bagging the Bookworm

Some might say "booooring", but I'm a firm believer that books make the best gifts. I'd say for anyone, but most definitely for the kid's. But big bookstores can be a bit daunting, especially if you're shopping outside of your own offspring's interests or age range. Ever showed up to a princess party with a book about a tom-boy? Don't worry, I've endured the wrath for us all.

Thanks to The Gifted Grasshopper we all have a little more help. Leave it to a pair of teachers turned moms to wise up and create a simple way to gift great books. The Gifted Grasshopper is a one stop shop for the perfect reads for babies up to third graders. Shop by age to find a hand picked selection of wonderful themed books that are sure to delight any kid. Best of all you can choose just a couple books or a bursting bag [$25-$75], and all will come tucked inside a sturdy signature tote with a bookmark, grasshopper glasses and a plush Griffen the Grasshopper. They even have a special tote full of selections from our fav, Barefoot Books.

You aren't able to choose the actual titles, but that's what makes us love it even more. In addition to a little less stress, we love the element of surprise.

Kea & Joby

March 03, 2008

Keaandjoby Soft & Sleepy

Everyone wants that perfect pair of jeans, their favorite t-shirt they have in every color, and the trusty pair of flip flops they spend every summer in.  It's the comfort and easy style we all long for, especially in these snow-boot-parka laden days.  Kea & Joby was created for just this purpose, and they've developed such a slick and relaxing kid's clothing line that I'm wishing their pieces came in grown-up sizes as well.

From the contrasting cuffs and stitching to the fabric made of spandex/rayon, Kea & Joby has thought of everything.  The colors are soothing but not boring and the various items are killing in the laid-back-funk department.  Their new spring/summer line includes more of the same awesomeness, but my favorite as of right now is still the contrast hoodie [$15]with cargo pant [$15] (winter collection).  These clothes are easily soft enough to wiggle around the house on hands and knees, and I'm convinced my baby actually napped longer in these clothes--they're that soft.  They're having a sale on the winter items in preparation for the new line, so hurry over and grab the good while you can.

Georgie Tees

February 27, 2008

GeorgieteesBecause, um, they do. Especially when you're postpartumly hormal and sleep deprived.

Things change. Have you found yourself humming and bopping along to what you thought was your favorite rock tune in your head only to realize it's an amped up rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star? Thought so. Depressing isn't it?

Ok, so maybe not depressing, just a very definitive reminder that lullabies are rocking our worlds more than we'd like to admit. Wait? What's that? Someone should totally put that on a shirt? Done, thanks to the Mama's at Georgie Tees. They've slapped Lullabies Rock and the cutest guitar graphic on a comfy organic tee that's perfectly for proclaiming your shift in musical prowess.

If you're not so much the rocking type, Georgie has a complete collection of slogany tee's for babes and tots that you'll enjoy. And don't worry Mama's, there's also a line of maternity tees just as novel as that bun in your oven.

Baby Love Slings

February 26, 2008

Babyloveslings Try This Ring On For Size

The number one question I am most often asked about babywearing is which sling to choose first. While I definitely recommend finding the right style and type of carrier that works best for you, I always suggest a ring sling.

I’m a new fan of Baby Love Slings ring slings [$60], with light but sturdy batik fabric and many styles and colors for every Mama’s personality. The Orange Mandala looks like the pricier slings you’ll see the celebs wearing these days, but don’t be fooled- this one is much easier on your wallet. The Baby Love Sling collection is vibrant and colorful for those with flair and also includes classic pieces with the simple bestseller Metro Black or the new Black and White Jazz.

View more fabrics available at Baby Love Slings here and have your carrier custom made at the same affordable price! Each Baby Love Sling is recommended for newborns up to children weighing 35 lbs, and a detailed instruction booklet is included, complete with photographs demonstrating proper use. Imagine a happy baby that cries less and has better emotional and physical development- all while Mama looks good wearing their sweet baby. We love slings. Babies love slings. Wearing your baby just makes good parenting and fashion sense.

Sandbox Threads

February 12, 2008

Sandbox My Kid Is Cooler Than Yours
I’m seriously tempted to keep secret about the gender of the bun currently in my oven- if only to avoid all the blue gingham and boats or pink ruffly frills from well-meaning gift givers. Unless of course I could send everyone over to Sandbox Threads for some actually hip and original duds for my little one.

Immediately Bill spoke to me. How can you resist these Famous Faces? Mama will certainly want one for herself. And you’re already singing In Your Eyes to your sweet angel- make it complete with the Say Anything Lloyd shirt [$17]! Seriously- could your kid be any cooler on the playground?

As soon as he or she pops out, my tiny one will be sporting the super soft & fresh 100% Organic [$17] from the Little Activists line. Choose your shirt style- from short sleeve to long- and customize the color to make yours even more different from the rest. Buying one size up never hurts- just in case- and find a sizing chart here. From gearheads to groupies, there’s a shirt in the Sandbox for every baby and tot up to size 6T.
