Sock Dog

July 07, 2008

Sock_dog Bow Wowza

When it comes to anything that involves a needle and thread I must admit to being somewhat intimidated.  You can imagine then my trepidation when I opened the Sock Dog kit [$20] only to find two socks, a needle and thread, buttons and some shrink-wrapped stuffing.  Sock Dog (along with his Socktopus and Sock Monkey friend) is a make-it yourself stuffed animal kit with two socks as the foundation.

I began the creation of Sock Dog by following the included instructions and proudly made it past step three. Admittedly, step four gave me a bit of trouble because terms like "whip stitch" have a tendency to leave me scratching my head.  The only sewing I've ever done has involved a foot pedal, so I had to Google "whip stitch" before I could go any further.
After what I consider a herculean effort, I managed to get through the end of the directions with my own green and purple plaid creature that could pass as a distant cousin to the Sock Dog pictured on the package.

Sock Dog, while cute upon completion, proved to be difficult for this not-so-seamstress Mama to assemble. I have faith though that for someone slightly more gifted in the sewing arena that Sock Dog would present a fun afternoon activity.  In the end, crafty types will even end up with one hot diggity of a dog to call her own. As for the rest of us? You can these cute creatures and more premade for just a few bucks more. [$25 and up]

Crayon Rocks

June 19, 2008

Crayonrocks Crayons Rock the Kasbah

As my little ones get more and more excited about creating their latest masterpiece of crayon goodness, I notice that often times they have to push too hard to get the crayon color to show up, or that their grip is out of whack as the rounded crayons post too big of a task for their tiny fingers.  This is why I was thrilled to stumble upon Crayon Rocks at the latest Green Fest here in Chicago, for their tiny unassuming little nubbins are pieces of gold now around my house.

Crayon Rocks are made of soy wax, so their colors glide on the page as if they were oil pastels or paint (but without the waxy afterglow).  Not only do they encourage the tripod grip, but they also develop fine motor skills, helping any grip strength problems.  Crayon rocks come in a variety of package options, including the 8-piece Sample Treasure Bag [$3] and the 16-piece Student Box [$5].  On top of everything else, they are adorable and kids love them.  What more could we ask for?

Wild Anamalz CD + Anamalz Toys

June 14, 2008

Anamalz Chillin’ with the animals, pardon me, Anamalz

My husband came home the other day and asked me what we were listening to, thinking I must have bought myself some new music. I told him to listen more carefully to the lyrics: With long flappy ears and a really big trunk, I spray water upon my back, to keep cool, to keep cool in the summertime. That’s right – children’s music. We’ve all probably heard more than our share of bad kid’s music, so when you find something that could legitimately be mistaken for music you might choose yourself, well, hang on to that; you’ve found something good.

The brand new Wild Anamalz CD [$24 – includes the CD, an original Anamalz toy, and shipping costs] features ten fresh, folksy songs about animals, written and performed by Beau Young, singer/songwriter and world surfing champion. From the twangy “Brown Bear Blues,” to the mellow rockin’ “A Lion’s Roar,” the style of each track embodies its subject animal’s personality, opening up opportunities for creative movement and plain old fun. When my son repeatedly requests the CD, I do not cringe or make excuses because this collection is enjoyable for all of us. And I’ll admit on record, I really like “A Zebra Is What I Am.” No, I mean, I seriously like it, people.

Right now you can get the Anamalz CD along with one of the original Wild Anamalz toys [$6-7 when sold separately], and these things are so darned cute. Handmade from organic Maple wood, formaldehyde-free glue, and water-based, non-toxic paint, each Anamal has a range of motion in the legs and head so that it can be posed in various positions, and has its own individual markings and wood grain, making it truly one of a kind. Any animal lover will have trouble choosing between some of the adorable members of the Wild Anamalz, Farm Anamalz, and the Australian Anamalz collections, but with a percentage of each purchase going toward wildlife organizations and coming from a company that puts such care into the safety of both our children (Anamalz are manufactured to the highest European and US standards) and the environment, maybe it wouldn’t be terrible to start a collection of your own Anamalz.

Win it!
We're giving away a Wild Anamalz CD to one lucky reader. To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with Anamalz as your subject. Let us know how many tracks are on the album and which Anamalz animal you'd love to take home.

Automoblox

June 11, 2008

Automoblox3jpgWhen your kid has a need, a need for speed . . .

Obsessed much? My kid is. When faced with any assortment of toys, he’ll go for the wheeled object every time, hands down. So what’s a mom to do when she starts to wonder how much intellectual stimulation one can really get from pushing things around all day, every day? Well rev up mamas because Automoblox [$38-$40] have rolled in, and these super fast, timeless beauties are the perfect collectible heirloom toy to give your kid the wheels he craves and a whole new level of play that you both will love.

Automoblox are basically three dimensional puzzles. The body of each car is made of three solid wood blocks – front, middle, and back. Each block has a connector that allows children to mix and match pieces from the other Automoblox in their collection. For example, one could create their dream vehicle using the front-end of the sleek, new C9R Sportscar, the squatty middle of the A9 Compact, and the M9 Sport-Van’s rear. Once the body is complete, kids (and adults) can then mix and match a variety of tires, roofs, and passengers. Thinking your three-year-old can’t do all that complex building? I am witness to the fact that indeed one can, and will, and won’t stop . . . for hours. These pieces easily and intuitively click together, allowing our wheel-obsessed children to practice creative problem solving and explore their imaginations with what they love most.

Aside from the educational benefits of Automoblox, these are just really great cars. They are extremely durable (bullet-proof wheels!) so that they can withstand the “love” that our children bestow on any favorite toy. Perhaps most importantly, our Automoblox are the fastest toy cars we’ve ever had. The first time my son pushed one, it flew all the way down the hall, crashing down our staircase as we watched in disbelief. It survived the fall with nary a scratch, and my son lovingly picked it up and hugged it close saying, “This car is awesome . . . really, really awesome.”

Box of Questions

June 07, 2008

Box_of_questions OMG BFF’s will LOL at this GR8 Game!

Do you remember going to slumber parties and willing yourself to stay awake so that yours wouldn’t be the hand dipped in warm water by a gaggle of giggling girls whose sole mission for the night was to cause the first one asleep to wet herself?  Yikes. Thankfully, that never happened to me.  I was too busy playing Light as a Feather and trying to sneak out of the house to go TP the neighbors.

Luckily, this generation of tweens has far more wholesome activities available to them.  The Slumber Party Box of Questions [$20] from The Box Girls would have been a welcome addition to any of the multiple sleepover parties I hosted in my much younger years.  Not only does it come packaged in a cute and colorful box, but it includes a whole slew (52 to be exact) of conversation starting questions that are sure to provide plenty of gabby fodder and laughter for girls in PJ’s.  With questions like, “When was your worst haircut?” and “Which cartoon character do you most resemble?” partygoers are sure to find something to dish about.

Though recommended for ages 8 and over, I think girls as young as 6 would find this to be a fun activity. On the other hand, I don’t see it being very popular among the older set; those over twelve might yawn and reach instead for an iPod.

Being the nostalgic goof I am I have to wonder where this little goody was back in the day.  I guess I’ll just have to settle for letting my 10-year-old have all the fun at her next sleepover.  And hey, maybe it’ll spare some poor soul the humility of the hand-in-warm-water trick.

Win it!

Sister Sue Cloth Play Blocks

June 05, 2008

BlocksGreat “darned” blocks!

Secretly I always have aspired to provide handmade toys for my kids. Unfortunately for me, and for them, I don’t have the crafty talent that is necessary for creating anything more than an oatmeal container with a hole in it. (Look, kids, it’s a … cylindrical bank!) Luckily for all of us moms who lack the skill set that includes darning, we now have Sister Sue Designs, available at Etsy.

Jen, owner of Sister Sue, has the skill and creativity for which I’ve always longed. Her cloth play block sets [$20 for 3 blocks] are well-made, unique, and available in several ultra-hip patterns. Constructed of 100% cotton and luxury fiberfill, these baby blocks are squishy enough for even the chubbiest of fingers to pick up one-handed and gnaw on, mush, or throw at one’s sibling. Each block contains a nice little jingle bell tucked inside and is encased in a crush resistant material that allows it to keep its block shape despite the fact that it is satisfyingly smushable. I love the Black/White/Red set, which accentuates the color contrasts that those very young babies adore, and the Groovy Girl set, with its swanky colors and prints, makes me wish I had a better wardrobe.

And so I have accomplished my secret desire after all: I have provided my children with quality, handmade toys. Now to take the adorable little Sister Sue tags off of them so that I can pretend they are my own creations.

Mary's Softdough

May 22, 2008

Softdough Rolling in the Dough

Since my wee one has been old enough to squish (and not eat) everything in sight I have been making him dough to play with with. It's not too difficult; a few pantry staples plus a little bit of time and some home made dough is ripe for the playing. But it's just not the same. Colors lack luster, it smells sort of strange, dries easily, is often just a tad too sticky. It's just not ideal. So why am I not just buying that commercial stuff that is everywhere? The stuff that we grew up with? Bottom line is, I just don't trust it.

The recipe of that name brand dough is proprietary so they won't release the ingredients; if you ask me my little one's health is more important than someone creating a knock off.  And yes, it is certified non-toxic but that just isn't enough for me, we all know how many non-toxic products are found to be otherwise, and how often. Thankfully, we have an alternative for you that is even better than that junk AND puts my home made stuff to shame.

Enter Mary's Softdough from Terrapin Toys. This soft, non crumbly modeling dough has been a hit for kids (and grown ups) of all ages around here and if stored in it's container it will last up to a year. Softdough comes in some amazing, vibrant colors and even scented, glow in the dark, and glitter varieties. Our favorite by far is the Rainbow Play Set [$19]. The play set includes 4 colors of dough along with a hardwood rolling pin and dough cutters in some super cool shapes. Enough fun, to keep your house busy for days on end.

The kids will love the dough and us mamas love that this product is safe and from a company that cares enough to believe in transparency. Softdough is made in the US (Oregon to be exact) from ingredients that can be found in your kitchen (you could seriously eat this stuff) and best yet we didn't have to go through an inquisition to find out what's inside. Ingredients are simply stated on each container and the website.

So whether they're rolling it, molding animals, cutting shapes, or taking little nibbles here and there (ok, so, that's NOT rebcommended) you can sit ack and let those little imaginations fly.

Win it!

Green Toys

April 30, 2008

Green_toys We're Going Green! And Plastic?

Before our babe was even born my husband and I vowed to keep our toy purchases tame. No flashing lights or crazy sounds, just simple open ended fun. In that vein, we try to stick to wooden toys whenever possible. While it's almost always possible to find a wooden alternative there are certain toys that, as much as I cringe to say it, work better when plastic. And as summer approaches I'm running into that group of playthings more and more.

The almighty sand bucket and it's shovel, sifter, rake cohorts are ALWAYS plastic. Cheap, flimsy, painted, foreign plastic. Ok, so I have seen a sand set or two featuring metal tipped, wood handled tools, but I'm not alright with possible weapons mixed with toddler impulse control. Definitely not ok with that. If you're with me, I am happy to report that FINALLY we have found a Sand Play Set that while plastic, is safe, and green and local!

Enter Green Toys (swooning goes here), all of their products are made in California, USA from recycled plastic milk jugs. So you drink and toss, they grab and reprocess that bulk of HDPE (high-density polyethylene - considered one of the cleanest, safest plastics around) into amazingly cool play things. The current line up of Sand, Tea, Cooking and Dining Sets and Indoor Gardening kit [$20-$40] are all made with out ANY traces of Phthalates or BPA and there is no exterior paint or coating eliminating lead worries. Of course a company this amazing also thinks about how the product gets to you. As a result, all toys are packaged in corrugated cardboard that is 100% recyclable and free from any plastics, ties or cellophane.  I should also add that these aren't flimsy throw aways, our sand bucket is one of the thickest I've come across and the shovel is sturdy enough to stand up to some serious hard labor, err, sand castle-ing.

So, the next time one of the relatives insists that plastic toys are just fine, because you sucked on them for years and turned out ok, you can agree and then give them a nice little intro to Green.

Win it!

Story Time Felts

April 14, 2008

Farmbook Come on Mama, Felt IS Fun

I'm starting to think that us mama's need to add some preschool teachers to our toy advisory teams. We've recently stumbled upon a glorious playtime addition only to find our new discovery has been rocking the preschool circuit since, oh, the beginning of time. You'll find all the fun at Story Time Felts and while I'll admit, the products might not look all that exciting to the average mom, you will be pleasantly surprised.

You'll find felt boards, dolls, large costume pieces for dramatic play and our favorite activity books. We highly recommend the pre-cut and assembled option as there are pieces aplenty and well, we already have enough to do. Each themed book is bound of sturdy felt pages and feature opening flaps, slots and plenty of space for your child to create. The tops of the pages open to pouches perfect for storing all of the people and accessories that complement each book. We took our Down on the Farm Activity book on a recent cross country road trip and I was amazed at the hours (yes hours!) of quiet entertainment it provided for both my two year old and 19 year old sister.

The Story Time site isn't the easiest to navigate but the extra scrolling and clicks are worth for the endless amount of (quiet!) fun the products provide. So head on over and see what you can dig up to entertain your brood. In the meantime, I'll be trying to cozy up to some preschool teachers to see what we can come up with next.

Clementine Boutique

March 13, 2008

Clementine Oh My Little Darlings

I admit it; my no sweets rule was purely for selfish reasons. The joy I would experience sharing an ice cream cone with my boy would not outweigh the insanity that would be sure to follow as he bounced off of wall, ceiling and my last nerve. I’ve since come around and now see the wonders of an occasional treat and a concept called moderation. Now baking up goodies has become something we both look forward to although one of us hasn’t fully grasped the whole moderation thing. Instead of saying no to another high-calorie cookie, I say yes to something even better, the handmade felt Sweet Shoppe Sugar Cookies [$14] from Clementine Boutique.

The six cookies come packaged as if you’ve just plucked them fresh from your local baker’s shelf.  Each cookie is topped with sweet felt frosting and shimmery bead sprinkles that look yummy enough to eat but instead lure you into hours (that’s minutes in toddler attention span timing) of imaginary play.  Play where mom and child can whip up dessert with no burnt bottoms and eat dozens of cookies without the sugar hangover.  And if unexpected guests like Mama Teddy and Plush Man Jack arrive, you can easily serve up scrumptious and equally adorable cupcakes before their tea gets cold.

Clementine has made the joy of baking a regular occasion in our house.  Now if only they could throw in a battered-covered spoon that I can hide in the closet and lick clean, we’ll be all set.

Win it!
We have a pack of Sweet Shoppe Sugar Cookies for one reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeak.com with Clementine as your subject and let us know what other sweet felt treat you'll find at Clementine. Giveaway ends midnight March 13.

Nest Baby Slings

March 11, 2008

Fornmnnest_2
They Have Important Stuff To Carry, Too!

Imitation is the finest form of flattery, right? Of course your son or daughter will learn by watching you early on that the things they love want to be held close, too. Most often that could be a baby doll or a “lovey” (in our case, Mr. Bear). And truth be told, sometimes that includes Legos, trucks, or even the occasional piece of food.

Ashlee Allen, owner, mastermind and creator of things at Nest Baby Sling has truly outdone herself this time! Debuting a whole new spring collection [$65-$85] for Mamas that is both breathtaking and fashionably fierce, she also added the Hatchlings [$25-$30] line for the little Mamas & Papas in training. Each Hatchling sling is made with the same fine impressive detail and care as the adult slings, coming in over 20 available styles! Make them walk the plank in the Arr, matey! Pirate [$25] or match Mommy in Chocolat [$25] or Daddy in Desert [$25].

I can’t only point out the new Hatchlings without gushing a bit over the gorgeous fresh spring set of slings for you. From the delicate Ash and Sparrow [$75 each] to the abstract Heart Nouveau [$85], you can clearly see Nest slings are a work of art, something you would see walking the high-fashion runways, if there were such a thing for baby wearers! Believe with Hope [$75], also available in Hatchling Hope [$25] created with breast cancer awareness in mind. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

All Nest slings are designed with black, silver, or colored aluminum rings in patterns and contrasting shades you would expect to see priced much higher, allowing you to carry baby in luxury without the cost. And the ultimate goal is to keep you wearing that baby close- because we all know that’s what’s best- so while you’re at it, do what’s most excellent… in style.

Win it!
We're giving away a Hatchling sling to two winners! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com with nest as you subject and let us know which sling from the new collections is your favorite. Giveaway ends March 11.

Rich Frog Pull Toys

March 07, 2008

RichfrogYou're on a roll, Dino.

Pull toys are somewhat a rite of passage for the newly walking aren't they? For whatever reason, seeing a tiny tot still a bit wobbly dragging along a string of animals is insanely cute (and yes, as I write that I am wondering just who dreamed up this whole realm of play). But lets face it, most pull toys are more of a flop. The wheels don't roll, the animals topple over, the action of pulling them creates a sound akin to something trying to escape from the bowels of... ok, you get the picture. They're just not fun. Requiring more "heeeeelp, Mommeeeee"'s than actual show time.

I'm happy to report we've discovered one that is more fun than fight! Rich Frog has a whole collection of pull toy families [$27] that are happy to roll right along with your little one. We're partial to all things prehistoric in my house, so the dino family was an obvious shoe in. T-Rex leads the pack and Triceratops and Stegosaurus trial right along, happily remaining upright. The wooden wheels roll smoothly on just about any surface, the first we've found to make the transition from hardwood to carpet without getting stuck in the process. And the soft stuffed animals add to the cuteness and have been a saving grace since my son has a gift for falling right on top of them.

We're approaching the upper limits of pull toy play- meaning not that isn't still fun, but that the walking while pulling has turned to running and jumping, and this dino family is becoming more weapon like foe than soft and snuggly friend - boys.  But this is one of those toys I'm happy to pack away to enjoy again next time or pass on down through the generations.

Pleo

February 22, 2008

Pleo A Real (Almost) Baby Dino

Oh, our lives have not been the same since Ugobe's Pleo came to live with us. A house without pets but with children that would love some, this baby dinosaur is the perfect fit. Just about the size of a small puppy and about the same price at $349 (but no vet fees, allergies, or food bills- bonus!), Pleo will warm the hearts of the whole family. His coos and sweet voice had even me snuggling him and rocking him to sleep- which he actually does, complete with a precious little snore.

With amazing technology, this little dino is made up of real sensors, cameras, & microphones to imitate real life emotions and feelings. Aside from the obvious motorized sounds and having to recharge batteries, Pleo might convince you for a moment (and for sure will leave young ones in amazement) that he's actually a real living thing.

Not recommended for children ages 8 & up is a bit harsh- as my 2 year old was in heaven with having his own baby dino and my older boys just weren't as impressed. Proper supervision at all times is a must (at his age, my youngest thinks everything should go in the bath- a big no-no for Pleo!), but I also found this a great way to teach responsibility and respect to "animals" without using a real-life animal as the guinea pig!

-Steph

Pleofood Take Two

My dino-crazed 2 year old was also delighted by the sudden appearance of a REAL baby dinosaur in our house! He is generally absolutely terrified of moving robotic toys, but Pleo was accepted (quite literally) with open arms. His realness in response and action is so spot on it was creepy at times and the fact that my techie husband and rough and tough toddler were equally enthralled was amazing to say the least.

In house already featuring a couple of dogs it was easy to jump right in and let him become one of the pack, and I think we often forgot he was just a toy until he zonked out in the middle of a rambunctious play session and we realized his batteries needed charging. In fact, I now find myself wishing all I had to do with the other four legged family members.

Pleo arrives as a baby and matures to do more the longer you play with him. His stay with us was short, but long enough we were able to see him become the dino equivalent of a rambunctious tot. I'm just waiting for another holiday to roll around so I can find an excuse to adopt one of Pleo's brothers and put an end to the daily of chorus of "MAMA! Where'd Pleo go'd?" Baby Dino, you are missed.

Alphabet Letter Boards

February 13, 2008

BibittyL, M, N, O, P

My biggest fear in parenting is not that my son will grow up to join the future convicts of America club, but that I will fail in teaching him to read. I know that may be completely irrational but my parents taught me to read before I entered preschool and this is the sort of thing that has caused me to wake up at night in cold sweats since he was just a blip on the radar. And while I am currently more of the casually learning vs. sit down and teach sort of Mama (and there's the fact that he's only two) I feel this urgency to prepare him to someday join the ranks of the literate.

As such, I may have developed a casual obsession with all things alphabet (and I think it might just be helping). My favorite find, comes via the little (meaning quickly becoming all the rage) etsy shop, Bibitty. Bibitty's Alphabet Letter Boards are fab to say the least. Flimsy flashcards are a thing of the past as each vintage inspired letter is mounted on sturdy hardboard perfect for play. And If you're hoping your little one will pick up a little more than fun, the bold letters, in upper and lowercase, and classic artsy images are the perfect intro to ABC's.

We'd recommend diving in and picking up the full set, but the letter's are also svailable individually, perfect for decor. And if anglais isn't quite your thing, you have a bi-lingual babe or are just gearing for a brainiac, there is a beautiful set available in français. Lead time right now is 2-3 weeks, so head on over and hop in line.

Win it!
We have a couple of letter boards for one lucky reader! To enter, email giveaways[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight February 13, with Bibitty as your subject.

P'kolino Clothes Tree

February 02, 2008

Clothes_tree My toddler has quite the imagination, he's always making up amazing stories about people and places and animals. His pretend adventures be sold for screenplays I tell ya. And so, during a recent late night, can't sleep, story session when he started in about a big green dragon who lived in a tree I didn't think much of it. His Papa and I listened and asked him questions and little by little I started to realize that it wasn't a tall tale he was spinning after all, he was just telling us about his dragon costume that was hanging down stairs on his much loved P'kolino Clothes Tree [$95].

The gorgeous wooden tree is both whimsical and child friendly while still appealing to Mama's modern style. Standing 4 feet tall it will tower over tiny ones and appeal to the older bunch for quite some time and the sturdy construction will keep it upright amidst costume changes and fruit plucking. The tree is shipped in two sturdy pieces that slip together no tools required. Even better is that the orange and green versions are made by artisans right here in the US (the natural and white are made with care in Asia).

I love that with a little imagination it is both functional and fun. While you might see a costume rack your little one is sure to see a forest of possibility.

KnotWud

January 31, 2008

Knotwud It’s Like Wood, Only Knot

We try and stick to a very limited plastic toy policy in our house – it’s a limited policy because my husband and I stick to it, the Grandparents don’t. Fortunately we had Santa on our side who coincidentally swapped out the plastic offenders for their wooden associates.  But wood isn’t entirely innocent in this house either.  My son has an arm, which he often reminds us by fastballing his favorite wooden car at our heads.

So what’s left?  Maybe the answer lies somewhere in between cheap plastic and wooden weaponry with KnotWüd, a complete line of foam toys.  With multi-colored foam pieces layered together, it has the look of real wood-grain, without any black eyes.  Our son loves his Train and Caboose set [$10] but at 2 ½ years he’s mouthing and chewing on more than when he had a reason too.  After noticing some teeth imprints and mysterious chunks missing, playtime with KnotWüd should be closely supervised especially when recommended for 18 months and up.

Although the intended audience didn’t seem to mind, I found the pliability of the foam particularly frustrating because it was a little difficult to snap the tops into place and keep them there.  But if I was strictly judging by the amount of playtime this little toy set has received, it’s flawless.  The several varieties of foam construction blocks would be a nice alternative and eliminate the frustration even if it is on the parent’s end.  Plus, getting hit with a load of foam blocks is not nearly as painful as the other option.

Bugabike

January 21, 2008

Bugbike Sweet Ride

No training wheels needed here for some cool moves on the Bugabike [$285] by Sabamba. Biker dudes & chicks ages 2-6 can ride in style while their bike travels with foot action only. The Bugabike teaches the bare basics of riding- it's all about balance, pushing, and just figuring how how things move. The easily adjustable seat and frame sized just right will grow with your toddler until they're -or maybe you're- ready for the pedaling & braking kind of bicycle.

We're already crazy about wooden toys, so it just makes sense we'd love our Bugabike Nature [$307] so much. Made of strong birch plywood and steel rimmed wheels, and in colors subtle and hip enough, you probably won't be banishing this bike to the garage. Ours is a new staple in the living room (thanks to non-marking tires!) And it's just so nice to look at! Oh, and um, our precious little ride has already passed the attack-of-the-artist test. (To my horror and then delight that the dark blue crayon wiped right off!!!!) An investment it is, at a few hundred bucks, but you can trust that it will be around for quite a while- Sabamba promises a three year guarantee against defects.  And did I mention it's just so nice to look at?!

The Bugabike is compact and convenient to travel along wherever you go. Give 'em a break from the stroller and burn some energy. Let your little rider Bugabike-it on walks through the neighborhood, trips to the museum, and adventures at the zoo. Or just let them ride it through the house like I do! That is until they start using my pillows for stunts...

Roomies

January 18, 2008

Roomies Not Your Grandma's Rag Doll

My boys are always looking for new "friends" to snuggle and play with, be it a sweet teddy or a funky giraffe.  Recently they started asking me why the store doesn't have "dollies" for them.  They want a friend to drag around by the leg, who will always be there when they're sick on the couch or having a hard time catching Z's at night.  Is that really so much to ask for in this pink princess world?

Well, thanks to the Roomie Rag Doll [$24], my search is over.  These silly peeps are unique and crazy, just the way my boys like their things to be.  These dolls are short on the pretty, but heavy on style as each one comes with it's own name and certain tragic comedy.  There's Chubby Bubby, the jocular constable and Jumping Jack, the would-be burglar.  You can also pick Pity Paul, who with his cast and black eye has more than a tale or two to share. Hilly Billy seems to be that special chap who, with his super hero cape, is certain to march to the beat of his own drum.  Not to be ignored, the funky lass in your life will enjoy adopting Polka Olga or my favorite anti-princess, Fabulous FuFu.  Her golden crown was no doubt earned with plenty of moxy to spare.

You can find these supercool friends at Vessel, one of our favorite places to find kicky modern goods.

Skuut

January 15, 2008

SkuutPowered by Foot

You won't find any tricycles in this house. Three wheels? Who needs 'em. And pedals? Maybe in a few years. Right now we are all about body power and that's all a kid needs to Skuut their way to happiness.

Created my a mom and pop for the 2-5 set, this gorgeous wooden balance bike [$90] will give tots and tykes the perfect primer in all things bike. Little by little they can learn to  balance, steer and coordinate all while rolling along like the big kids. The handlebars are perfect for tiny grips and the adjustable padded seat will easily grow along with it's rider.

We haven't attempted to skuut along those mean suburban streets yet (they're a bit snowy) but my little guy has been making laps of joy around the house for weeks and when he's ready to hop up on a traditional two wheeler I have a feeling our transition will be smooth sailing skuuting.

Celinepup Not Your Mama's Monkey

When I was a kid, I distinctly recall a few of those oh-so-memorable toys. The Sit-n-Spin, the Slap Bracelets, and of course, the Sock Monkey. Now, the Sock Monkey’s of the past were simple and all pretty much looked the same. None the less, I loved my monkey, and far be it for me to deny my one and only son the joy of having one of his very own. The Sock Monkey’s of today aren’t as boring as I remember, and with a soon-to-be-Mama created organization like Ahimsa Creations, you can find a monkey (or dog or cat or rabbit) that suits your child (or even yourself) and his ever changing personality.

Each Sock Friend [$15-$30] has their own personality, attitude, and fashion sense. The fabrics and prints are vibrant, different, and one of a kind, making them the funky monkey at the next tea party. Elizabeth over at Ahimsa Creations, not only makes all of the Sock Friends by hand, she also has a deep passion for the welfare and proper treatment of animals. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word for the Buddhist philosophy of doing no harm to any living creature. This philosophy is the foundation of Ahimsa Creations and is why all of the products that she creates are strictly 100% Vegan! No wool, cashmere, leather, or fur can be found on or in any of her products. For those Vegans and Vegetarians here at Mama Speaks, that is one amazing thing that makes us love this company even more. Elizabeth creates the Friends out of vintage fabric and buttons with each and every one being strictly unique. By purchasing your new friend from Ahimsa Creations, you are guaranteed that nowhere on the planet you will find another one like him. And since everything is handmade, the items are ever changing. So making it a habit to check out the new goods is a good habit to have.

Aside from the Sock Friends, you can also find hand-sewn children’s clothes and bibs, belts made out of recycled men’s ties, hand-stitched adult T-shirts, Purses, Jewelry, and more fun and funky items to spice up your closet and your everyday life.

Ahimsa Creations is one of those companies that just makes you feel good to buy from. So go ahead and swing on over and take a look at all of the amazing hand-made items that are just calling your name, I am positive you will find something just for you (or your little one).

Kushies2 Koolest Toys Around

My son sticks everything in his mouth, and I mean everything! He doesn’t hesitate to grab a stinky shoe, the cat’s food, or my iPhone (ah!) and cover it with his wonderful baby slobber. Yet, I have had a hard time finding something that is meant to go in his mouth that he actually wants to put in there. So, when I discovered Canadian-based Kushies and their fun and eclectic line of toys, I knew we were in business.

The Zolo Linko – Clip Together Teether & Toys [$32] is one of the coolest looking toys I have seen in a long time. It consists of 11 separate pieces that your little one can play with individually or link them together for a cluster of colorful fun. Each section has a different texture and shape to it to stimulate baby’s senses, with his hands, eyes, or mouth.

Aside from my new favorite toys, Kushies also has a wide variety of other baby related products.  From the  the Splish Splash Rain Jacket and Pant Set [$47] to the Swimsuit Diapers [$11]. Both come in bright colors and prints, that make sure your little guy or gal stands out, whether  jumping in a puddle or playing in the sand. It makes me long even more for the winter to hurry up and end already and bring on the April showers and some Summer days.

Plan Toys Kitchen Center

November 29, 2007

Plan_2 Make Dinner Plans

There is one thing in this house we’ve all grown to expect:  pizza and cookies for every meal, every day. Fortunately for my thighs and slowing metabolism this is just what is being cooked up by our child’s imagination in his play kitchen.  With a menu this sophisticated, no ordinary kitchen will do but the Kitchen Center by PlanToys [$120] can easily handle the job.

The PlanToys Kitchen Center has sleek styling any modern-day chef can appreciate and the bold colors make it anything but boring.  And we mean bold colors as in vibrant non-toxic, water-based paints, not colorful plastic garbage as the kitchen is made from chemical-free, preservative-free, recovered rubberwood. The Kitchen Center features an oven and cook top on one side with a sink and dishwasher on the other – cooking and cleaning?  I’m taking notes as I eat my 8th dozen of cookies.

Holgate Toys

November 24, 2007

Colorcone Out With the New, In With the Old

It seems every time there is a new innovation in toys it is short lived- products are recalled, the parts are too small, or dangerous or contaminated. Aside from the obvious hassle it leaves us Mama's to worry over exactly what is safe for our kids to play with these days. In our house we've gone back to the basics, plastic things that move and flash have been evicted to make room for classic wooden toys.

And when I say classic, I mean it. One of our favorites is a little ol' toy company that's been around for well over 200 years. Holgate Toys, located in Pennsylvania, are the premier maker of children's wooden toys in America, and with good reason. Their vast collection of playthings and accessories are made from 100% natural, kiln dried hardwoods and bright bold non-toxic paints; and EVERY toy made exceeds US safety standards, which these days says a lot!

It's probably well worth mention that when Mr. Roger's himself was looking for toys for his neighborhood, he choose Holgate Toy. Take a peak around and you'll might just see a Trolley and some royalty you recognize. Our little one's love the Handeez vehicles for zooming around and us Mama's have spent way too much time fashioning jewels with the Jumbo Lacing Beads.

Afforable, safe toys, made so close to home, has us breathing a collective sigh of relief. And I'll take hearing the sound effects of my little one over a piece of plastic any day.

Win it!
We have a Rocky Color Cone for one lucky reader! To enter send an email to reviews[at]mamaspeaks.com by midnight November 24 with Holgate as your subject and answer the following question. Who was the famous brother of Holgate's early toy designer?

Fagus Toys

November 18, 2007

Jeep Viva La Fagus!

When the major toy recalls hit, I was thrown into a panic, scared to look. “Please, please don’t say matchbox cars.” If so, parenting life was going to get a whole lot harder. We, and our current car collection, were spared but for how long? The fact we were in the clear this time didn’t make me feel entirely too safe. So bit by bit the cars were secretly weeded from the collection but what to replace them with? Our first guess, Fagus, proved to be a huge success, so much we have little need or desire to keep searching.

When our German-made wooden Fagus Jeep [$69] arrived I worried about how it would go over for a little boy with very selective taste in miniature cars.   Instead of metallic paint made of who-knows-what to chip and flake and plastic mini-detailing to snap and break, the wooden jeep marvels with it’s natural beauty, full-tilt, easy steering, more open-ended detailing like the three solid color peg figures, removable gas tank and tire tread that makes my mid-sized SUV swoon.  And at a hefty 11 inches of solid beech without a nail, screw or staple in site, this car is not going anywhere.  Your kid can try to drive it into the ground but this is one toy you’ll be handing over to his kids and their kids.  Suddenly it was “matchbox, who?”

When you’re looking at the price tag of a Fagus car, remember you can easily pay a couple bucks for a car that will quickly deteriorate and annoyingly fit in all the wrong places, or you can pay a little more for a high-quality, durable car one time.  We’ve learned that a zillion pieces of junk doesn’t make a nice collection, but one or two heirloom-quality items is a collection worth playing with and holding on to for life. (Who wants a dinky car that can fit into a matchbox the kids aren’t allowed to play with anyway?)

Rough and Tumble

October 22, 2007

Bobles_animalsAny given morning at my house may look like a mini boot camp to any outsider. There's the endless marching up and down the stairs, the mad dash to the play room to rocky-rock-rock in the mini rocking chair and then my whirling dish makes his way to the kitchen to tunnel over and under everything in site all before we all collapse at the breakfast table. No, this isn't some torturous toddler fitness regimen, it's simply life with a toddler who likes to move!

Put that all together in one sweet little package and I've been put to the task of finding furniture and playthings for the house that is tarzan safe and still fun. To be honest, I hadn't had much luck, until we heard bObles [$32-$120] had finally made their way to the US. And oh, bObles how we love you!

Developed by a pair of Danish sisters and inspired by a day at the zoo, these soft, colorful tumbling animals provide endless opportunities for fun. Thanks to the geometrically based design the pieces feature surfaces for rocking and rolling, balancing, climbing and generally tumbling all over. Best of all they can be stacked and stuck together to create new animals. Some of our running favorites are the Chick-let" (chicken + pig) and the towering Affe-odile (giraffe + crocodile) and that Elephant is just too much fun on it's own.

The kids will have a blast and us Mama's can smile big knowing all that play is challenging and developing our little one's emerging motor skills. Oh, and the EVA foam is environmentally friendly, free of any toxins or phtalates and it's a breeze to wipe clean.

Happy tumbling.

Win it!

We have a bObles Chicken for one of our readers! Just send an email to reviews@mamaspeaks[dot]com by Midnight, October 22 with bObles as your subject.

Lmm2_2 I'm convinced there lives a creature in every mom's dryer that has a hunger for socks. Ok, so not really, but why is it that one sock is always missing? Tall Tales

October 14, 2007

Dinofelt Have you ever just wanted to jump into the pages of a story book? To be able to take the characters and craft your own scene? I often watch my son listen to a story and then wander off to continue visiting with the wild things on his own. This is why I love the play offered up by FeltTales Storyboards [$17].

Storyboards have been the secret joy of preschool and kindergarten teachers for far to long, now you can bring the fun right into your home. The simple felt covered boards, available in a variety of themes for little princesses or dragon slayers, come with precut felt pieces that your little one can use to craft endless scenes and situations.

I'm a huge fan of open ended play and while there's a tiny bit of structure in the scenes and shapes provided, imaginations can run wild with the endless possibilities. FeltTales are targeted for ages 3-6 but my 2 year old thinks they're fantastic and counting the times he's caught me playing after he's moved on, us big kids love will them too.

Imagine and Play

October 13, 2007

Imagiplay Imagine a world where toys sparked creativity instead of only promising to make your baby a genius by the time they are 6 months old.  And imagine a world where toys weren’t detrimental to Mother Earth or our children by being laced with lead paint.  Thankfully, ImagiPLAY didn’t only imagine it, but they made it happen.

ImagiPLAY is probably best known for their Giant Building Blocks. What may not be known is these classics are made from at least 50% recycled cardboard in the USA. But ImagiPLAY’s selection goes beyond cardboard and each item encourages open-ended play which is crucial to all areas of child development. Our little guy loves challenging his mind with the 3D Wolf Family puzzle.  Although, I’m not sure what that says about me who finds it challenging as well.  The collection of toys, blocks and room accessories will no doubt be passed down for generations, that is if your child will ever give them up.

However, what I find most impressive is the company itself.  They have good reason to boast about their toys with integrity, each hand crafted toy is made using environment friendly materials such as rubberwood or bamboo.  The paints are non-toxic and their MDF is formaldehyde free. All your kid needs to know is that they are fun!  (But it’s good to know mom and dad can sleep at night.)

I only hope Santa knows about ImagiPLAY because the Zoom to the Moon set is topping our list right now.  But do we really need to wait until Christmas?

Mama Speaks readers can save 15% at ImagiPLAY through December 15, 2007 with code mama1215

Win it!

One lucky reader will win their own Wolf & Cub puzzle. To enter send us an email (reviews@mamaspeaks[dot]com) and fill in the blank: ImagiPLAY, Toys with _________. Ends midnight October 13.

The Cutest Critters

October 06, 2007

Tarma This month little ghosts and goblins will take to the streets to see if they're in for tricks or treats. It's such a rite of childhood isn't it?

Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays growing up and with good reason- the dressing up in costumes, the pillowcase full of candy, staying out past dark - it's any child's dream! And while every aspect of this fun day is carefree for the kids, that costume part can be a major source of stress for us Moms.

Do you go home-made or store bought? Discount store wearables or a real costume? We looked high and low for the best costume out there for your little one and found some sure to take your breath away (spookiness not included!). Tom Arma, the most published baby photographer in the world, has capitalized on cuteness with his signature line of costumes for babies and kids. The primarily animal themed costumes are adorable and then some. And the quality and comfort can't be beat.

Arma's heirloom quality costumes go on just like regular clothing and are fleece lined for comfort. All costumes include a snuggly head piece and booties to complete the look (tails too when appropriate!) and the true to fit sizes and published measurements ensure you'll find the perfect fit. At $50+ per costume they aren't cheap, but I'm happy to pay that for a costume my son will actually keep on. Besides, they're only little once.

The collectability of these costumes means they can sell out fast so head on over to BuyCostumes.com (the only authorized retailer!) to see what's left for this year. Through October 30, you can also enter Tom's Photo Contest for a chance to win some great prizes for your little critter.

Plus, an added bonus because they're fabulous- 100% of the electricity used to make Tom Arma's costumes is offset with 100% Green-e Certified Renewable Energy.

A Little Help Here?

October 04, 2007

Learningtower Remember that old adage that a womans place is in the kitchen? Yeah, um, no. Makes you grit your teeth right? Thankfully times have changed, but nevertheless us Mama's still find ourselves in the kitchen, a lot- breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and "oh, you need cupcakes for tomorrow sweetie? And the store is closed?" So we cook. Some of us love it. Others do it for no other reason than the fact that well, we must eat to live.

The biggest problem most Mama's have is what to do with the kids while you're cooking. Unfortunately the consensus in one of my Mom's groups is that this is the time the kiddies get parked in front of the TV. In our house that isn't an option so we've struggled with how my son can help safely. When he was tiny he would hang out in the sling while I cooked, once he was sitting there was a special safe spot on the counter, once he could stand we pulled up a stool or a chair. Wonderful! We could chat and measure and stir, it was such a special time. Until that day he fell. Saw that one coming didn't you? He's fine, but needless to say from that day on he was sent off to play when meal-time came.

Until, the glorious day we discovered The Learning Tower by Little Partners [$170]. They boast it is "a child's special place to learn, observe and create" and it definitely is. The sturdy wooden structure features a stable no tip base, an adjustable height platform that can easily adjust as your child grows. And it holds up to 500 pounds, so when you need to get to that cabinet above the refrigerator (why are those there?!)  you can climb on up yourself.  We'll admit it is a bit of chore to put together but the construction is such that we don't see it coming apart any time this century.

The platform is enclosed on all four sides so there is no chance for falls, meaning you can stir and scramble worry-free. Recommended for children 18 months and up and we see it being useful for years to come. In between tower time it is the perfect desk or snack tray and the optional Playhouse Kit helps you create a fort or puppet theater with a quickness.

All that and the fact my toddler now asks to help wash the dishes?  Need I say more?

Head over to the BabyCenter Store where The Learning Tower is currently 10% off [$152.99] and you can get free shipping on all orders over $29 (enter FREESHIP29 at check out)

Happiness In Your Hands

September 27, 2007

Bbkids2 I remember having one of those moments- feet kicked up, hands resting on my pregnant belly, day dreaming of knitting booties and playthings for my baby-to-be. Awww, sweet, right? Problem is, I can't knit. Never touched a pair of knitting needles in my life and I once spent 2 hours walking in slow, slack-jawed circles around a yarn shop overwhelmed and in awe that they really make that many different kinds of yarn. So lets just say I leave this sort of thing to the pros.

Lucky for me there are places like Bla Bla Kids that bring the joy of soft and snuggly handmade love home. Dreamed up by two life-long gal pals, all of Bla Bla's beautiful products are made by Peruvian artisans. From backpacks, blankets and booties, to finger puppets, rattles and dolls, each heirloom quality item is sure to impress. And the 100% cotton construction means everything is super soft, safe to snuggle and will hold up to a life time of lovin'.

Win it!
We're giving away a set of Fruit Rattles [$35]! Just let us know who dreams up Bla Bla's designs by midnight September 28. (reviews@mamaspeaks[dot]com)

Mini Modern

September 23, 2007

Offi You just found out you’re expecting and you’re immediately launched into a panic.  But not for the same reasons as most new-parents-to-be, like how will you keep another human alive.  Your first thought: “Oh no, how will all of that plastic baby crap mesh with our ultra-mod décor?”  One look at Offi’s complete line of modern kid furniture and you’ll realize like most new parent fears, this too is unwarranted.

Offi allows you to easily combine an urban yet playful look with functionality for all of your baby and kid needs as demonstrated in their Bebe crib and matching changing table all the way up to their Doodle Drawer Desk for ages three and up.  Most importantly, they even make playtime look cool without the help of flashing lights and sounds making you count the seconds down the end of the battery life.  I’m completely enamored with the Spaceframe Sculpture Kit but I know my little one would love the “you mean I can draw on the furniture?” Woody Chalkboard Table.  And if these items still don’t coordinate with your pre-baby style, then we recommend looking at the rest of Offi’s line just for us big kids.

Since you’re already a fan of modern design, the price tags on some of these items may not surprise you.  But for the rest of us, you’ll be happy to hear Offi is extending a very generous offer to Mama Speaks readers. You can purchase anything from the Offi at wholesale pricing.  No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, we did say WHOLESALE PRICING.  Now is your chance to modernize that playroom with high quality, designer products, unlike the stuff from that big blue and yellow place I like to avoid on the weekends.

If you're interested in making a purchase just shoot us an email (reviews@mamaspeaks[dot]com) and we'll hook you up with the details.

Due to awesome demand, wholesale pricing is only available through the end of business Friday September 28. We thank Offi for their amazing generosity.

Super Kid Solution

September 16, 2007

Capers_5 I've always envied a child's imagination and sense of justice. Whether they watch the famed cartoons or not, there comes a point when kids just seem to have a need to don a cape and save the world. Noble, yes, but it leaves us Mama's with the task of finding an appropriate costume for our little hero. Might sound easy, but any one who's been there knows... you're in for it.

This super creation can't wear that color cape and this one needs a something long and flowing to help them fly fast but this one needs a short cape so they can do whatever it is they set off to do. And what we thought would be a split second of clothes-pining a towel to the back of their pj's or tying an old burp cloth around their neck has evolved into something requiring fabric and pins and a sewing machine. Yikes!

Thankfully, Little Capers [$22-$35] has just the thing to swoop in and save us all. Their ingenious super tees have the perfect graphic whether your little one is off to save the planet or spread world peace and the detachable capes just velcro on to the back of the tee so your little one can take flight. There are even cape-less super tees available for the smallest of hero's.

We've seen their magic in action, a timid toddler becomes a zipping, dashing savior of man-kind in the time it takes for a shirt change. And best of all, these tees are stylish and simple enough that you won't mind the leaving the house with the kids in super gear (unlike that snow boot, swimsuit, sword combo last week), a must when your realize that it's 5 o'clock and the cupboards are bare. Now if only someone would come up with a superhero that swoops in with dinner and dessert just when we need it.

Take Flight

September 11, 2007

Klt While pregnant I was determined to plan the perfect nursery (even though I knew my babe would spend, oh, no time in there) All was going well until I decided to hunt for a mobile to hang above the changing table. I couldn't deal with mass produced little bears wearing NFL uniforms and most of the cool modern mobiles I found looked like they could take an eye out. After hours, and hours, and hours- I gave up.

If only I'd stumbled upon KLT Works sooner! Kristin, a talented artist (and first time Mama-to-be!) hand makes the most beautiful mobiles. The "Flights of Fancy" mobiles [$180] are full of vibrant colors (a stark black and white version is also available), soft textures and simple bold shapes. The hand made wool felt and cotton birds take flight around a wooden turquiose egg. The modern, whimsical design will delight kids (or us kids at heart) and is the perfect addition to any nursery.

If you're past the mobile stage or just looking for something your little one can squeeze, you'll also find a collection of adorable hand made plush animals and puppets. If you just can't get enough, your little one can wear the animals and our favorite "nest" on an organic onesie or tee.

Be sure to check out Kristin's watercolors and drawings in thread(!). Gorgeous! This is one talented woman!

Win it!
We're giving away a hand-made plush "nest" perfect for you're baby bird! She's due sometime in January- the person closest to her due date wins! Send your guess to reviews@mamaspeaks[dot]com by midnight September 11.

Peek-A-Boo I See A Shoe

August 24, 2007

Peekaboo Long car rides, flight delays, shopping excursions. All occasions where our kids tend to run out of steam before we do. Toys loose their novelty and get chucked aside and well, us Mama's sometimes run out of ideas.

I spy anyone? Children are natural scavengers who love to find things and this game is one thing that seems to keep them endlessly entertained. So, it's no surprise that two Mom's took this concept to the next level. Inventors Marcella Shumway and Teresa Hammond created their Peek-A-Boo bag [$15] to provide "the peace and quiet all mothers crave". We say they created hours (ok, so minutes) and good, quiet fun.

Each Peek-a-boo bag is a soft corduroy square with a see-through window. And through that window the magic begins. Hidden amongst white beads are tons of tiny surprises. Dinosaurs, Dolphins, letters and more. And a fabric tag is snapped to the outside, listing all the hidden treasures inside. Plus they have three different versions you can keep on rotation to keep things fresh.

We've quickly added this to our must-have list for leaving the house. And don't be embarrassed if you find yourself taking one out and poking around. Peek-a-boo is pretty addictive and these are something to treasure.

A is for Amazing

August 22, 2007

Amazing We all know our baby's are amazing, so it's nice when someone else thinks so too. And when those people are making developmentally appropriate books and toys for your baby- that's even better. Amazing Baby does just that. With fun plush toys and board books for you and baby to share, so while you read you play, and while you play, you learn.

All of Amazing Baby's products (recommended for babies 0-24 months) feature bright colors and stark contrasts to catch and keep your babes attention. The toys take it a step further with crinkle sounds, reflective mirrors and squeaky surprises. Amazing toys, amazing fun, amazing learning for your amazing baby!

And if our opinion isn't enough for you Amazing B
